shipping in j-pop fandom
I've never been in an Asian real people fandom, and I'm curious how it deals with real-people shipping. I know of k-pop slash, but that was at least five years ago, and in all the SuJu wank I've read, shipping never seemed to get mentioned. I also know people ship j-rock stars, but is it different with things like Arashi and Kat-tun (or whatever they're called)? Does it happen, just only in locked communities and flocked posts? If I squee over j-pop stars touching in general fan communities, would I seem like a n00b who can't follow the unwritten rules?

I'm particularly interested in j-pop fandom's attitude towards femslash shipping, which I've never heard of happening anywhere. Because I think I've fallen in love with Perfume (warning: this song will play in your head for the rest of the day).

There are English speaking Morning Musume femmslashers, I know that much.

I know there is Japanese seiyuu femmeslash shipping, between Paku Romi and um. the one who played Alphonse in FMA.

(And they are adorable together in interviews. xD)

Lolz. Araishi and kat-tun have a hell of a lot of public shipping and fanfic.

Best to check the community out before hand, but I though that most j-pop fan communities /were/ about squeeing about the touching. :P

Takeuchi something...? I did not know this, whoa. When I was into seiyu, not even the slashiest of male seiyu got slashed! (I used to have a Horiuchi Keyu/Narita Ken icon but seem to have deleted it.)

Hah, probably. Thanks!

Takeuchi Junko? Nah, Alphonse is voiced by Kugimiya Rie.

(Speaking of seiyuu shipping, Takeuchi Junko should be shipped with Nontan, damn it.)

Sugiyama should be totally shipped with Takeuchi. Or with Morita Masakazu. *is embarrassingly excited about the prospect of MoriSugi fanfic by one of her favorite authors*

(Sorry for the repost, the first sentence somehow disappeared.)

LOL, reminds me of the huge wank that broke when Megumi Ogata married a man much younger than her. "OMG OGATA-SAMA ISN'T A LESBIAN OH NOESSSS!!!111ICHI". And long ago, there were the Tomokazu Seki x Takehito Koyasu shippers...

IIRC, people now speculate if Hitomi Nabatame is a lesbian since some of her charas are rather femslashable. Kan'u from Ikkitousen, anyone?

I am so not surprised. But what about Koyasu/Hikaru Midorikawa? They played antagonists so much, there must be some slash buried somewhere on the net...

I know Johnny's bands (like Arashi and KAT-TUN) have tons of RPS about them. I don't know anything about the femmeslash side of things, though.

Ha ha ha, I can't tell you anything about femslash, but the great thing about the Arashi fandom on lj is people are pretty open and friendly about mostly everything. If you slash the band members, there are plenty of comms for that (the ones I've seen haven't been locked), and nobody's going to jump on you for talking about it in the general comms*. If you don't, nobody cares about that either.

I love this fandom so much.

Exactly.
And besides, it's not like the boys care much about RPS. If they did, Ohno and Nino wouldn't insist on being joined by the hip.
The official fanservice is overwhelming.

See, that's why I love Arashi. The boys would have invented gay if they could, and nobody - nobody - in fandom cares if you ship them or not. It's all one big pile of rainbows.

[info]atreyu
2008-09-02 07:05 pm UTC (link)
ALL OF THEM. *coughs*

The songs that really hooked me where Happiness, Sakura Sake, Jidai, and I've currently been listening to Truth and Once Again over and over (these are easily found with a YouTube search; the music videos really are the best way to be exposed to them).

The gen. comms on LJ are the best - a_ra_shi and arashi_on - you can join in and slowly get used to things without feeling left out. If you're into J-dramas, the boys have done several that are really fantastic.

Sorry, it's my goal in life to convert everyone I meet into an Arashi fan. >_>

Mandatory link: Arashian Files. If you like them, it has all the albums, the PVs, several concerts, a lot of their variety shows and more random Arashi stuff.

I'll give you YouTube links, but the Jimusho periodically gets them down. >.<
We Can Make It! is another great song. I got hooked with this one.
Pikanchi Double is one of my favourites and they look great on that PV.
Aozora Pedal is probably Arashi's best PV by common standards. By 'RAINBOWS AND PUPPIES AND SPARKLES' standards, however, Kitto Daijobu wins hands down.
Oh, and Kotoba Yori Taisetsuna Mono is extremely cute
Of the latest ones, Kaze no Muko e is nice. And Happiness is pure undiluted Arashi.

About the doramas, Kimi wa Petto is great. It's actually good and Matsujun really shines. Gokusen is nice too.

Their variety shows are fun too. Mostly because they're on crack.
Seriously, like... 'How much time can you breath under water while eating peppers?'. No, really. They did that. [If I got the vegetable right.]

And well, what she said.

Don't know much about J-pop, but in the J-rock/visual kei side of fandom being in fandom is pretty much synonymous with shipping people. And yeah, the guys are well aware of it and encourage it (gotta love fanservice). I think the difference between RPS and FPS fandom though, is that in real people fandoms there's a line between squeeing about them being cute together, and actually discussing what their personal lives might be, and a lot of comms frown upon the latter. It depends on the comm though.

As for femmeslash, the more reasonable parts of fandom look upon anything involving girls as if it were some kind of rare species of butterfly that might disappear if you blink. There's a lot of demonising of any girl that goes near them, though :(

That's what I was fearing. :( Oh well, maybe it won't be so bad if I just focus just on the females, and not get involved with m/m slash or the females invading that.

Yeah. I'd say it depends on where you are. If it's Perfume, an all female band, I'd think you have a green light. I'll ask my International Wota-writing friend about the existence of RPS with that band. I have the feeling she would know.

Agreed. There's only one band I know of that's really against fanservice and that's Dir en Grey. Most of it is Kyo's bitching, though, so I really don't pay much mind to it and some of those doujinshi are hot anyway</s>.

The anti-fanservice/doujinshi thing actually started while they were still at least kinda visual - there was some drama about it in fandom around 2002, if I'm remembering things correctly.

But yeah, those videos don't really help their case much.
