And we thought the Bat-Fam was emo before?

I.. I have no words for the feelings of dread creeping up my fanboy spine.

Next, we can likely expect a retake on classic westerns about a poor, disfigured farmer's son who whines and mopes for seven years without ever becoming a badass bounty hunter. To The Fray songs no less.

Because dammit, that's how I wanna see Jonah Hex!

I'm gonna go all Anakin on you for a moment here. Please ignore.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Um. Yeah. First of all, Dick Grayson? Seriously, who wants to hear about Robin besides Robin fans? And he's not even Robin or Nightwing. Just... DJ Grayson.

BUT YOU WERE THE CHOSEN ON.. Er, nevahmind.

But yeah, while I'm sure there's some great elephant poop stories in Dick's childhood. It's really not very noteworthy without the yellow man-panties.

Now gimme a vintage Doom patrol series. Or a Young Indy Adventures style look at Bruce Wayne's pre-bat globehopping, and that would get me on the couch every week like clockwork.

Oh, I would love a Young Indiana Jones style Batman. Looooooove.

I would be all over that.

Also, why can't they do something original, like make a show from the origin of the villain?

Wasn't this Jeph Loeb's original pitch to the people who ended up making Smallville? "Gotham City," starring Young Bruce Wayne?

I've been daydreaming about how awesome that would've been for about eight years now. Selina Kyle, a teen in the foster system! Harvey Dent, the up-and-coming young lawyer! Pamela Isley, budding scientist! Etc.!

Well, most people who don't really follow DC Comics pretty much only know Dick Grayson, so that part is kind of understandable.

Maybe they only know Dick Grayson as Robin, but I still wouldn't watch a tv show about Dick Grayson.

This. He doesn't even have powers - will he fight crime or just hang out with carnies? I mean, a show about carnies could probably be totally awesome, but... Robin? Him?

For real! The reason Smallville works is because Superman was always Superman, even before he worked out the self-congratulatory name. But Robin wasn't Robin until he met Batman. There's simply nothing special about a young Dick Grayson. A show about a kid in the circus would be pretty awesome, agreed, but it seems like they're really straining to work in the comic-book angle because Gosh-gee-golly, them pichur books are real cash cows!

Let's cross our fingers and hope it goes the way of Aquaman.

Yessss, totally. Like they're hoping that it will just have a built-in audience. :\ I'd almost say, "oh hey, you could do a show about babs as bat girl!" and then I remember Birds of Prey. :|

*whispers something about owning the series because she mostly liked Babs and the actress who played her* It sure as hell wasn't Canary or Huntress. *shudders* Ashley Scott in a leading role. That will never go well. But I liked the show's darker settings, less "happy happy joy joy." And it was, at least, not an edgy remake.

They did an Aquaman series?

They did a pilot for a Smallville-esque treatment of Aquaman, which failed miserably and wound up (thankfully) not getting optioned for series. The pilot ep, however, was made available for download on iTunes not too-too long ago, and I'm sure if you google around you can find a streaming version of it. I warn you, though, Aquaman as a doofy, vapid, surfer-teen is pretty painful.

God, I remember it so clearly. I'd been out of the loop on DC comics for awhile, and most of my geeky buddies just liked the cartoon. So about twenty of us were in the student lounge, watching, when the second episode of his first appearance came on. Cue murmurs of "When did Aquaman become a badass?" Then came the scene where he hacked his hand off to save his kid. Jaws fucking dropped, I swear. "Holy shit. Can they do that?" It was awesome.

I KNOW. He hacked his hand off with a DAGGER and then wrapped the stump with his own BABY'S BLANKET. JESUS CHRIST, THAT IS THE EPITOME OF HARDCORE. A series based around a guy that fucking awesome would be the best show EVER.

That does sound awesome. I had no one with me to appreciate the sheer levels in badass he took in that episode.

Ahahahahahah, I actually shouted out what you typed when I first saw the article. Scared the living shit out of the cat too.

Also, I agree with you on the 'who wants to hear about Robin' part. Okay, so this might be interesting for all of two episodes, but there's no way in hell it'll last a full season. I mean, it's CW, home of every epically failing show ever and a small few that don't quite suck.

I foresee a lot of episodes where Bruce Wayne, Commissioner Gordon, and Harvey Dent just randomly show up at the circus to say foreshadowy things about Gotham needing a Saviour, and that Saviour needing a Sidekick.

2008-10-08 04:19 am UTC (link)
Yeah. Sometimes that can be done to good effect, but I doubt these people will do anything but ham it up. Like, oh, in an effort to make up his dad promises to take Dick to his favorite rock concert, but only after this next performance ...!

Gag.

So, basically... it's about a bunch of people in a circus. That has the potential for an interesting show, but I don't see what it has to do with Dick Grayson. How was he anything special before he started fighting crime with Batman? At least Clark Kent has superpowers that can lead to wacky hijinks.

In the one-hour "Graysons," which will be set in modern times, young DJ will face challenges involving first loves, young rivals and his family as he grows up. Souders and Peterson have come up with an original take on the character.

THAT IS NOT A PLOT. Ugh, what a waste of a tv show.

But Dick was like twelve when his parents died.

Isn't twelve a little young for the CW's target demographic?

The only way I could see something like this working if it's set after Bruce has taken Dick in but before Dick's officially become Robin, but it doesn't sound like this is going to be doing that. sigh.

Like others have said, there's no PLOT to this. In Smallville, its about Clark growing up and learning valuable things on his way to finally become Superman. Clark CHOSE to be Superman. Dick became Robin only after a tragic event. So basically, it's a life of a normal carnie kid before he gets utterly screwed over and thusly becomes a crime fighter.

Wow, that's just as riveting as a series about a young Bruce Wayne before his parents are killed. Sure, you might see a few neat things here and there, but not enough for a whole SERIES. There's a reason why the comics only glimpsed into this period through a few comics or flashbacks.

Dammit, if you wanna do a comic-book series so bad, there's BILLIONS of characters to choose from. Use those!

Late to the party, but, damn, when will they put Smallville out of its misery? Please to not drag it out for another season. If we have to suffer through a season of DJ (WTF) Grayson, at least let it be the bullet that finally takes that lumbering mass of fail and lose out of the world.

It's like watching your grandpa wet himself, at this point.
