Gen Con Update
Just got a follow-up to my Gen Con email regarding their criteria for rejecting Gen Con's donation:

Thank you for your follow-up inquiry.

One of the criteria we take into consideration is whether the organization is financially sound. At the time we were contacted Gen Con was filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Before we could reach consensus, Gen Con moved forward in selecting another charity. Again, we did not realize how much concern this caused within the gaming community until we began hearing from so many of you. It was never intended as a slight.

I hope this provides the needed clarification. It is my understanding that Gen Con also has posted information under “Forum” on its Web site.

Sincerely,

Cheri Dahl
Vice President,
International Communications and Fundraising

Meanwhile, on Gen Con's forums, they're still saying it's the D&D association (emphasis mine):
Gen Con contacted CCF about our intentions and asked for a logo and some promotional materials that we could use on our website. We were informed by a person at CCF that they would not be able to provide us with these materials, apparently due to our association with D&D. We were not comfortable with this position, considering Gary’s role as co-founder of D&D, and founder of Gen Con, and therefore we decided to pick a different charity.

Something's fishy, and it isn't just my icon.

GenCon filed for Chapter 11? I hadn't heard.

Ditto. Someone here isn't being forthright.

Anyone able to double-check the claim?

Ooh, I found something.

From Slashot

Heartless Gamer writes to tell us that Gen Con LLC announced late last week that they have filed for Chapter 11. This move will not affect the still profitable Gen Con Indy event which will still happen August 14-17, 2008. "This action became necessary as a result of significant unforeseen expenses associated with attempts to expand its core business to encompass externally licensed events. [...] The protections afforded by Chapter 11 will allow Gen Con to further its efforts to address its liquidity needs, preserve value for its creditors and explore strategic alternatives for the business." Evan writes to add that this is the result of LucasFilm suing GenCon.

Ah, success! So does this make Gen Con liars, or CCF really good back-pedallers?

Still, why didn't CCF just say that in the first place?

If it truly was the original reason, it's probably because they were trying to have a modicum of decorum. I wouldn't consider it polite to spread someone else's dirty laundry, personally, whether or not it was publicly available.

If their email is to be believed, they hadn't actually given GenCon a firm yes or no when GenCon decided to go with another charity.

Whereas I heard from somewhere that the problem wasn't D&D (which makes sense given that they accepted donations from Gygax), but rather that the auction included some hentai products that they didn't want being sold next to the CCF moniker. Granted, I got this from my brother-in-law, so I don't know how true it is.

I can still see a private donation being categorized as different than one from an organization like Gen Con, though.

This is the one I heard:

Christian Children's Fund made the decision to decline the gift from Gen Con, LLC as the request presented to us gave the appearance that CCF (the organization) was an endorser or supporter of a gaming convention, which CCF was not. As many non-profit organizations, CCF is selective in its endorsements or support in order to maintain the integrity of its name and logo. We cannot lend our name to an event for which we have no involvement. This decision should in no way be interpreted as CCF holding an opinion on Mr. Gygax, gaming enthusiasts or the game Dungeons and Dragons.

*shrugs* I was of the impression that in this case GenCon got a little carried away and publicly announced this before getting the details sorted out. Private donations are different from ones where an organisation has it's name tied up.

With this page here: http://www.livegameauctions.com/CharityAuction.jsp I can see how being named as official and other wording could make a charity feel nervous if they were unsure of the organisation and felt a lot of publicity could come out of it publicly tying them to it... since public image and being seen as reputable IS how charities are able to organise long term sponsorship.

I keep thinking of some of the slightly off colour ways people raise money at fun events and what someone with a sense of humour could do..

Like Slave Auction for Amnesty International, and Yaoi padling for...

Both are methods I've seen/heard of for fundraising.....

That's odd - I haven't seen that response before. The one I and many others received said this:
There appears to be a misunderstanding which I would like to correct. When Gen Con contacted CCF about its auction, we were pleased to accept donations. However, we couldn’t lend our name for publication because our policies have specific criteria for endorsements. We were unaware that this had caused any problem or concern for Gen Con until we began receiving emails. This decision was in no way intended to be a reflection on Mr. Gygax, gaming enthusiasts or the game Dungeon and Dragons. We have the utmost respect for the gaming community and were touched by the generosity expressed through your auction. We were disappointed that we were not the recipients of the donation but we were pleased that another worthy organization benefited.

Who posted the one you quote?

It was on slashdot... Tracing back it appears to be an earlier email from L. Jackson

Crimony. That just makes the whole thing weirder, what with CCF sending out different explanations in their emails.

I don't see how it's that different. It's signed by a different person. It came on a earlier date.. by at least ten days.

But it still says GenCon did not meet criteria, we weren't involved with them, so we weren't giving permission. The newer one just gives more criteria and that they weren't given time to go over the information they had - and become involved - and what some of that information was.

It's more likely that this was the standard answer, it covered the fact that they are selective in their endorsements, and aren't actually involved in GenCon - didn't want them using their logo though the money would be just fine. GenCon themselves say quite clearly that they wanted to use their logo, even with the dnd stuff. ;>.>

Then CCF got another 1000 emails, and GenCon didn't appear to be doing any thing to help them out so they went. Fuck it.
