When fandoms collide
At the Borders last night, I saw a YA display of Twilight and some suggested alternatives. One of them was the first in Ms. Clare's City of Bones trilogy.

Click for photo!

Color me amused.

All they need is Eragon in there and it'd be a published-badfic trifecta!

Maybe it was on the other side of the stack, and I just didn't see it. XD

The worst part is that my father actually liked Eragon. Not the movie, but the book (which he got on CD, as he's too dyslexic to be able to read normally). My mom even found it interesting. When I found that out, I was terrified.

There's no accounting for taste, I guess.

I was talking to a friend and he mentioned that he'd read it recently because a friend recommended it, and I was all ... >.>

Me: Really? I started reading it but I thought it was kind of... bad.
C: Yeah, it was pretty bad.

I was relieved!

Not surprising, since Stephenie Meyer is a fan of the Mortal Instruments trilogy, and recommends them to her readers.

She is not a fan of the incest though. :P

It makes a cosmic kind of sense, yanno?

The only thing that could make that more perfect is if a Moonlight fan accused her of plagiarizing Twilight from a fic.

Hah, found the quote:

City of Bones, by Cassandra Clare (and the sequel, City of Ashes which doesn't come out until March--make friends with booksellers! They share advanced reading copies!). I am totally intrigued with this series, at the same time there is one particular issue that messes with me. I don't want to spoil anything, so I won't specify. It's not BAD, just really, really uncomfortable. I thought she'd put it to bed in book one, but then it was there stronger than ever in book two. I think she's going to try to resolve it in book three, but HOW? HOW CASSANDRA?? (Ha ha, sorry). I need to find a City of Bones forum to vent! The thing that really gets me about City of Bones is that it is about 200 times better than Wicked Lovely, but Wicked Lovely is the one that gets all the accolades and the prominent shelving in the bookstores. Yes, WL has a wickedly lovely cover, but just go google the City of Bones cover. OH. MY.

It's from an interview which is part of a scary series where, amongst other things, SM reveals that she is annoyed at her husband for not taking her seriously when she says that she'd leave him if Edward or Jacob showed up at her door ("Yeah, you do that, Steph") and that she has a list of people she'd like to stalk.

*backs away from SM slowly*

I hope she's saying that tongue-in-cheek. I really, really do.

How ironic that she's outraged over the fact that Wicked Lovely is getting attention for having a pretty cover.

Grrr, most bookstores don't make displays because of cover attractveness. We do them according to things like what corporate wants, publisher promos, author events (like signings or local authors), sales histories, quantities on hand and bookseller personal recommendations. In that order. Pretty covers earn a prominent placement only at the end of the night when we have holes that need to be filled, and they're taken off when we get ahold of whatever was supposed to go there.

*wipes up* Sorry, I had to deal with an author last week who was pissed his book wasn't on a display. Also, City of Bones is promo'd in most B&Ns, at least. I (as per usual) have no idea what that woman is going on about.

On what planet is City of Bones better than Wicked Lovely?

Oh, wait...that'd be the one where Stephenie Meyer is actually a talented writer.

It feels more and more like her fans are just echoes of her crazy. They like to read her because they ARE her, just as she IS Bella.

My sister speaks highly of Tithe, by Holly (?) Black. Is it as godawful as Twlight and City of Bones? Normally her taste is quite awesome. :/

It's not the awesome-ist YA ever, but it's nowhere near as bad as those other two.

Well, it's certainly much better than either of those two, but it's got the whole "Dark Angsty Magical Boyfriend who is kind of a jerk to the heroine but he loves her really" thing going on, which I personally find very annoying, but if you like that/don't dislike it, it's worth a read.

Eh, it's not ZOMG High Qwality Riting(TM), but it's not seriously terrible. I read the first one but didn't really feel compelled to read the others. Worth a shot if you've got some time to kill, and there's nothing else around to read, I suppose.

It's dorky and goofy and kind of fun. The characters reference Star Trek and manga a lot, and the author at least tries to keep her changes coherent with the mythology she's working in. The leads are kind of annoying, but nowhere near as bad as Edward and Bella. I find a lot of the minor characters interesting. Black has the ability to craft at least one or two scenes with emotional power behind them. Not great literature by any stretch of the imagination, but not bad.

I was able to get through Tithe but it didn't make me feel like reading any of her other YA, since it verged on purple at times. Her Spiderwick books for younger readers are better written, probably because she can't be as verbose and throw long and/or obscure words around for no reason. In contrast, if CC's work merely verged on the purple it would be a huge improvement, to say nothing of SM's cracktastic use of vocabulary.

Ugh, Teen Lit.

Dear Teen Lit "Authors",
Just because you're writing for teens doesn't mean you have to write formulaic, meaningless dreck with more focus on the brand names, outfits and hair color/styles of the characters than, y'know, an actual plot. It's like producing Children's Theatre Theatre For Young Audiences; just because it's being made for a younger set doesn't mean you should give them total crap! Give them good stuff, for nourishing young, developing minds!
Rage and irritation,
fm

I am so happy you made this post. Not only does it amuse me, but it gives me an excuse to show that I'm a total fandom_wank nerd.

My friend was checking out our local library's website and they had Cassie Clare's book listed as recommended summer reading. I was torn between laughing my ass off and shaking my head at my library... I took a screenshot to amuse myself. (I didn't think fandom_wank would care.) God, the more I talk the more pathetic I sound. D: I'm just that dedicated to you, fandom_wank!
