I saw this last night.

My reaction was the same.

The word "upbeat" destroys all my faith in the movie those fantastic costumes and visuals built.

I don't know how accurate that article is. I've read a bunch of articles and interviews with Snyder and while yeah, it appears the squid is not in the movie (and never was at any point in the development) the ending is by no means "upbeat" considering New York City is still destroyed... just not by a squid beast.

Most interviews with Snyder seem to indicate that the ending will have something to do with key nuclear detinations... which I think is a rather poor choice considering in the comic the whole point was to PREVENT nuclear war (honestly, how would setting off nuclear blasts in an American city PREVENT nuclear war?).

I still plan to withhold final judgment until I see the movie though. Who knows... whatever the film people have cooked up could work.

From what I've heard, it's not nuclear. Though who knows with the comic book movie rumor mill.

No squid?

Honestly, I... I like that idea. That squid-monster kind of marred the ending for me - felt like I was suddenly watching a 50's B-movie.

Okay. I read Watchmen. Wasn't a fan of it, but I do appreciate it for the piece of work it was. There are two big fans of it in my house though, so I was resigned to seeing this at some time (and weathering the post-movie dissection on the way home).

But...what? Upbeat? Giant squid? Alien invasion? I don't know about this...

Wasn't the blond dude's plan to unite the world based on the destruction of NY which he'd initiate but in such a way to seem as if it were an alien invasion, rather than Russian?

Right. The idea being that the USA and USSR would put aside their differences and unite against a third (imaginary) foe.

All I know is if someone is prevented from saying his "35 minutes ago" line, I will be VERY disappointed.

And if any of the conversation after that is gone I will cry. I found myself entirely too amused by Nite Owl's skepticism and Rorschach demanding the cat be taken away.

I've been following the movie's production closely, and I think that reporter is pulling "potentially more upbeat" out of his ass. The squid is out, but there's this very recent video interview with Snyder where he says that the moral checkmate at the end is intact (um, spoilers for the book, natch). So it sounds like he's only changed the method of destruction rather than attaching some kind of happy, more audience-friendly ending to the Grimfest that is Watchmen.

And just to throw this out there, Dave Gibbons has been involved in the production and seen the rough cut and says the film is very true to the book's themes, if that reassures anyone.

Going over it again, yeah, it does sound like the blogger's tossing the "upbeat" in there with not much to go on. I do wonder about the new ending, though; the interview seems to hint that it'll involve Dr. Manhattan somehow.

I'm still saddened by the lack of fake alien squid, though.

I'm just annoyed that the "the city is afraid of me I'm seen it's true face" line on the poster reads like a run-on sentence. Use punctuation correctly or don't use it at all!

They fixed the punctuation for the high-res version of that teaser poster at least.

On one hand, I want the damn squid. However, if the altered ending is still able to keep the themes in place with little to no difference, I'm likely to be fine with it.

From what I understand, the Soviets and Americans join together to wipe out an invading horde of Care Bears (who just want to bring the world together for a big hug and happy fun time).

This could work.

I'm now picturing Alan Moore quoting Ed Wood to Dave Gibbons. "You forgot the octupus." "No, no, I'm saving that for my big underwater climax!"

Because Alan Moore is totally channeling Ed Wood with his STUPID! STUPID! Baptists attitude.
