HBO orders fantasy pilot 'Thrones'
"HBO has given a pilot order to fantasy project "Game of Thrones."

The program is based on George R.R. Martin’s bestselling series of novels "A Song of Fire & Ice" and executive produced by David Benioff ("Troy"), D.B. Weiss ("Halo") and Guymon Casady ("Hope & Faith"). The title “Game of Thrones” is from the first novel in the series.

If greenlit, “Thrones” would represent the rarest of TV genres: a full-fledged fantasy series."

From here.

Personally, I'm torn between being really apprehensive and excited.

Awesome. Maybe Mr. Martin can peel himself away from Livejournal for long enough to Finish The Fucking Book, George.

I have no opinion on the show, I'm just amused that D.B. Weiss is credited for something that isn't out yet.

Bring it.

If it's terrible, I don't have to watch it, but the wank will still be delicious.

A couple of nights ago I started re-reading A Feast for Crows, and had two reactions: one was to crave mulled wine (because it's been freaking cold at night in my barely-insulated housetruck), and the other was to frequently break into giggles at how silly GRRM's prose is. I hope they do something about that...though at least it won't be quite so out of place in dialogue.

Interesting that this should be announced right after Legend of the Seeker starts airing. (In case anyone has wondered: it's crap, but I'm enjoying the cheese and the cameos by Xena/Hercules people. Ted Raimi!)

Is Legend of the Seeker based on some exceptionally shitty novels or is it just an original pile of mediocrity?

omg is RenPic really behind it?! I might actually have to liquor up and tune in after all. RenPic crack how I've missed you so! ;_;

Its based on the Sword of Truth books. More commonly known on F_W as "the one with the evil chicken." I think there are still icons floating around from that wank.

It's not technically RenPic. It's technically Disney/ABC taking their first foray into syndicated TV.

Same executive producers, though.

Paint drying, root canals, etc. I agree.

It surprises me, how watchable the show is. Even with Raimi and Tapert heading things up.

Agreed. And... I don't want to like Richard given what an enormous dick he is in the book, but the actor is kind of sweet in an imitation Nathan Fillion kind of way. Oh god, now I need to go hide in shame.

Also Jay Laga'aia and Bruce Spence are FTW.

YES. Oh, man, I wanted to hate Richard...but he seems to have more in common with Luke Skywalker (...HAHAHAHHAHAHA) right now than he does the character I despised in the book.

I only decided to watch this because it was Raimi/Tapert AND Jay Laga'aia is in the cast. Why yes, I am that shallow.

(Craig Parker plays a lovely baddie, as well. Mmm, Haldir.)

Oh, I mostly wanted to watch because I love me some Star Wars prequel bit part actors. Mmm, Captain Typho...

And god yes, Evil Haldir. Every time I watch, I blank out on where I know him from despite the fact that for a month before I was telling everyone "DUDE! EVIL HALDIR!" He has such a great voice for it!

Also, it's fun to watch drunk with my friends and watch my husband scream at Kahlan.

All of the characters seem to be more likable on TV. Especially Evil Haldir.

(That scene in the first/second ep where he's roused from bed? I so expected there to be a naked woman in bed with him. I think my brain is aligning Evil Haldir with Gaius Baltar for some reason.)

What is your husband screaming at Kahlan? XD

Baltar! <3 Your icon is win.

Oh, he's decided he hates the series and everyone in it, especially Richard and Kahlan. Everytime she opens her mouth he starts yelling "Shut up shut up shut up!" and every time Richard slow-mos he starts throwing things at the screen and telling him to go fuck himself with his stupid glowy sword. It's awesome.

Reminds me, I need to rewatch the first and second episode. We spent most of the time talking over the dialogue to our friends describing the shit that goes down in the books and then yelling "I'M NOT KIDDING, YOU GUYS."

I only read the first one, got to the point where Richard's bio-father is revealed, and threw it across the room in disgust. Everything else I know, I learned on Fandom Wank.

I'm hoping that Raimi and Tapert can turn this steaming pile of horseshit into something fun and watchable. Turning the villain into someone I like watching is a good start, I think. And we know from Xena and Hercules that these guys can play fast and loose with canon.

The friend I introduced to it has never read the books, doesn't do f_w, and she likes Kahlan thus far. I need to get together my snarkier fangirl friends and play the "I SWEAR I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP" game while watching.

It also helps he was shirtless in the first episode. It SO helped.

Is Bruce Spence the guy playing Zedd? Because I LOL'd at Zedd hiding his cock with another cock.

Yes, that's Bruce Spence! Also: the Gyro Captain in one of the Mad Max movies, the Train Man in Matrix: Revolutions, Tion Medon in Star Wars Episode 3, the Mouth of Sauron in the deleted scenes from Return of the King, some alien guy in a season 4 episode of Farscape, an evil poacher in Ace Ventura 2... basically, he's in everything ever.

Yeah, I died laughing at that, too. Especially because next to me I heard this: "That chicken was no ordinary chicken. That chicken was a venom cock. REVERE IT."

Hopefully it convinces the writer guy to finish writing his next book (and this time, please with less gratious random lesbian sex that is of course between characters who don't even mildly like each other. Fantasy authors, do it properly. Just one time and I'll be happy)

That said...how are they gonna try to film those books? Methinks they'd need a lot and lot and lot and lot and lot of screentime to get even half of it done...while the other half would be a full screen censor bar.

My brain totally forgot the poorly-done lesbian sex, like, did I miss a chapter?

Supposedly, they're going to do a book a season, and as proven by HBO's Rome, they aren't going to need censor bars, at least. I don't know how it's going to work, but this is pretty much the best case scenario for ASoIaF.

I'm much more excited about the show than I am about the books - I have a feeling that my poor brain will have an easier time keeping track of who's who and who's on whose side in TV-form than in book-form.

I've said it before and I'll say it again--at this point, I don't care if it doesn't get picked up for good as long as the pilot gets leaked to the internet. I just want to ogle and see what they did with my precious precious ASoIaF. Who they cast, what the costumes and sets look like, if Ray Stevenson and Kevin McKidd get cast as anybody please please please how they're planning on handling some of the more questionable plot aspects... it's like all my Christmases and birthdays came early this year.

Is it wierd that I'd rather see the Wild Card books adapted for tv more than Thrones?

Because really, a tantric pimp, frilly alien manwhore and flying elephant girl would make for quality entertainment.

Really, a kid getting pushed out of a window by a naked man who was protecting the secrecy of his incest-y relationship is a bit racy even for HBO.

Wait, no, I remember the torture episode of Rome. Maybe it's all okay.

Mostly, I'm worried that they would try to take some of the jagged edges out of the characters...
