More HP vs Twilight
Tell us: What's Better: The 'Twilight' series or 'Harry Potter'?

Maybe I just don't get it but what exactly is the comparison here? Putting aside the fact that one series sucks harder than a black hole, they're not really comparable. OR ARE THEY? I honestly don't see why people keep doing this.

"Twilight" is up by seventy-four percent.

Obviously no one from the general public knows about this poll.

Does it matter? I mean, clearly, I'm not going to read the Twilight series - partly because it's never gonna be my bag, and partly because people on JF have done a pretty good job warning me off (*collectively hugs all the souls who have saved me wasted money, and hours of eye-bleeding, honestly, 'thanks'*).

But in all honesty, if people actually like Twilight, and the various sequels, so what? This is like comparing oranges and apples.

Wouldn't it be better to compare Twilight to Buffy? I mean both have female main characters, both mainly deal with vampires, Edward is a crazy-ass stalker and Angel (when he was evil) was also a crazy-ass stalker, both deal with high school kids, etc.

The only similarities that Twilight and Harry Potter have is that they're both books.

They're both fantasy books, and obviously all fantasy books are the same! Also, vampires and werewolves exist in both, I guess.

...

Remus Lupin imprinted on Tonks! :O :O :O

Were I the betting type, I would feel safe betting a good amount that the person who made the poll has never been much of a fantasy reader.

It's because they're both wildly popular best-selling phenomenons that are popular with young people. Otherwise there's no similarities.

Harry Potter's better simply on the basis that he isn't Deeply In Love with a walking talking marble statue. There's character development and stuff in there! and also, no teenagers falling in love with infants.

However you feel about the writing of HP, you have to give it that.

"Twilight has ruined my life. My dog ran away, my mom died while I was reading it, I failed high school and my boyfriend dumped me. I have no reason to live now so I'm just going to jump off a cliff. Maybe Carlisle will turn me into a vampire then."

I want to "lol n00b" every single person in the comments section.

And I love how characters that were once thought of as horrible, unintelligable monsters (i.e: Vampires, Werewolves) are given starring roles in this saga. Plus, it doesn't hurt to have a hot, sexy vampire play the lead role.

Yes, because Twilight is the first book to ever feature sexy vampires and werewolves.

Bella and Edward’s romance just brought back fond memories of how I felt when my husband and I started our relationship.

D:

I like the one girl who apparently likes Twilight better because she prefers Pattinson to Daniel Radcliffe. Does the fact that RPattz was in HP as well count for nothing?

I need a headdesking icon SO BADLY right now.

Comparison:
Harry Potter -
* Phenomenon that caused the New York Times to start a brand new category just to get it off the 'real' bestsellers list.
* A world-wide phenomenon that had grown adults (men AND women) standing in line at midnight book release parties.
* A series about a hidden magical world that exists concurrently with our own.
* A series about love, with strong emphasis on the choices one makes and the power of a self-fulfilling prophecy.
* A series that could be read as an epic struggle between good and evil as well as the coming-of-age story of a single boy.

Twilight-
* Phenomenon that caused people to question the sanity of all females ever; was also kicked off the bestsellers list by a HP spinoff.
* An American phenomenon that has grown WOMEN acting like crazed crying hyenas (and stampeding wildebeest) at actor mall signings.
* A series about a hidden sparkly supernatural world that exists concurrently with our own.
* A series about love, with strong emphasis on a lack of choice and of the inevitability of fate and destiny.
* A series that cannot be read as anything more than the self-indulgent masturbatory fantasy of a lonely housewife.

Yeah, same thing, really.

Slightly OT: I went off on my friends last week for calling Twilight "Harry Potter for girls". I asked how many of them had read the Twilight books versus the Harry Potter series. All of them had read HP, none of them has read Twilight. And they were all girls.

THE STRUGGLE NEVER ENDS.
