Music Rec Post!
SO, FL, I have recently suffered through an external hard-drive crash. (If anyone knows how to fix a hard-drive that the computer doesn't even knows exist, I am accepting suggestions D:) I lost around 200gb of data, including over 3,000 music files belonging to me, my sister and my mother. (And other random tracks that I still have no clue to their origins... like the SpongeBob Squarepants soundtrack?!) I have been left with the tracks that my partially filled 2gb MP3 player has. This is a sorry state to be in, guys.

What I would like are some suggestions, so I can broaden my music selection, as I don't really listen to the radio or music channels etc. it's sometimes hard to come across new things.

You can suggest anything from classical to heavy metal, from any where around the world, old and new.

Suggest your favourite singles, albums, soundtracks, groups, artists etc. Anything you are a fan of. If you have a link to youtube or something else, that will also be great. But I can search for myself if not.

Thanks in advance!

Ooh ooh I can never pass up a chance to pimp Flogging Molly, who are kind of along the lines of the Dropkick Murphys, ie Traditional Irish/Punk fusion, but a lot mellower. And awesomer.

Have you tried:

http://www.diskinternals.com/

One of their tools might be able to help you. Most of them are free to try, so you can make sure they'll actually work for you before you shell out any cash.

Their Uneraser was able to save almost everything on my old flash drive, which was giving me the dreaded "the disk is not formatted" message. Unfortunately the restored files had lost their filenames, so I had to do a lot of sorting out, but it was better than nothing.

Here is a short playlist!
But I couldn't find everything I wanted to suggest(the internet is a fickle bitch) so here's a more comprehensive list:

Patrick Wolf!
(I most enjoyed his "Lycanthropy" album, but "The Magic Position" is brilliant, and "Wind in the Wires" has some really lovely things on it.

Fiona Apple's "Extraordinary Machine."

Laura Veirs' two albums--I forget the title of the first, though it is really really good(possibly "Galaxies?"), and the recent one is "Saltbreakers."

The Killers' "Sam's Town" (surely you have heard this)

Kate Bush's "The Dreaming," or "Hounds of Love"
(the track "Running Up that Hill," on Hounds of Love, has been covered by a ridiculous number of artists, including Placebo, Patrick Wolf and Within Temptation; I really like the Placebo cover, which takes it from being a song about longing into being a song about desperation. The Within Temptation song takes it into a song about being fourteen, near as I can tell.
"Hounds of Love" was also covered by the Futureheads, and it goes from being a song about being terrified by love, into being a song about being exhilarated and chasing someone else.

Feeder's "Yesterday Went Too Soon," or "Echo Park" are both really, really good.

Single tracks I really like:

"Waltz," by Suneohair (スネオヘア)

"Winter" by Caroline

"God Knows" off of the Haruhi soundtrack

J-rock pimping time? :D

This is just a little from what I have uploaded at the moment:

Art of Life by X Japan- Epic metal orchestral thing with a 10 minute piano solo in the middle. The whole thing's just under half an hour long, and every minute of it is amazing.

Miyabiuta ~Dokusou~ by Miyavi. This is my favourite Miyavi album, it's all acoustic latiny bluesy guitar stuff, like so. Kimi ni Negai wo is my favourite song of his though, it's just about the sweetest thing ever.

Trial 0406 by rice. Rice are a vocalist/drummer duo so they have a bit more freedom with the other instruments they play with, so they have a cellist as part of their backing band :D The singer has a really unique voice that I love so hopefully you will too XD

Any song by Pink Floyd. I'm personally a huge fan of their "Animals" album but of course "The Wall" and "Dark Side of the Moon" are also great. And their other albums are worth a look at as well.

Aerosmith, Boston, Oasis, and The Strokes are all great bands, too.

Otsuka Ai is a really awesome jpop artist (here's her song "Kingyo Hanabi").

And if you're interested in happy German eurodance songs, check out some stuff by Blümchen (for example, "Heut' ist Mein Tag").

Oh, and Dido. Dido makes me happy. :D "Thank You" and "White Flag" are both awesome.

Also, listen to this song. It's hypnotic.

Apologies if I'm recommending the hopelessly mainstream; I'm not sure what's been popular in England, or what you're aware of. If you want me to get incredibly detailed and specific on the Celtic side I can.

Scissor Sisters, especially anything they did on Ta-Dah. "Elton John if he was more gay" kinda feel, which makes sense since he had a lot to do with that album getting made, but in amongst the campy awesome songs there's also a lot of depth and sincerity.

For Celtic stuff, I second the Flogging Molly. For more trad Celtic but still with a rock bounce to it: Young Dubliners, especially Real World and Absolutely for the sake of introduction. Anything by Gaelic Storm, Seven Nations, and The Elders, who have varying degrees of trad. All of these mix various Celtic influences including the more artistically liberal North American scenes. If you want some Colorado Celtic bands let me know.

Cake is alt-rock. Their song Short Skirt/Long Jacket is the theme song to the NBC show Chuck. Their sound is kinda like what a really mellow spy would listen to on vacation, if that makes any sense. My husband's favorite band is Modest Mouse, and you'll probably like them if you like Cake.

Aphex Twin if you like electronic music that's occasionally brain-hurty and sick and wrong. Aphex Twin lives to disturb, but the music is solid. Dir en Grey is Japanese-language metal. I have no clue what they're singing about but they sound like deeply troubled young men, which is more of a recommendation than a caution. If you value your soul, don't look at their videos ever ever ever, there are some things you can't unsee. But I love their music, whatever it is they're singing about.

Music from Denver, CO, since you totally asked: Yo, Flaco! mixes hip-hop and jazz. Any band that has a horn section and an emcee is all right with me. They're broken up now, so CDs is all you get unfortunately. The Flo-Bots are blowing up right now in a good way; it's another rock/rap band, for some reason mixing rap with everything is big in Denver. Devotchka is best described as "gumbo" because they have every music style in the world in their sound, which is sometimes described as "gypsy punk" like Gogol Bordello but infuses a lot more. They did the soundtrack for Little Miss Sunshine and got a Grammy nomination for it. I'd recommend another band, The Fray, but everyone seems to be sick of them. It's not their fault, they're apparently really nice people but since they got big they've been rammed down our throats by the radio station. It may be different there, so if you like their song How to Save a Life (in that really sad Scrubs episode with the transplant patients) their catalog is probably worth a check.

Well, I'm a metalhead. Mostly melodic heavy metal, however... but here are my current favorites:

Tarot - one of the lead singers is the male singer for Nightwish. Their most recent album, Crows Fly Black, has been in constant rotation since it came out in 2007.

Sabaton - Swedish power metal. Their "theme" is historical warfare. That's what they sing about - war. Without managing to glorify it. The history nerd in me (well, I did get my BA in history!) appreciates it. Their most recent album is Art of War. Equally as good is Attero Dominatus.

Kamelot is slightly more progressive power metal, but I do love both Ghost Opera and the Black Halo. Khan has an amazing voice, really. Smooth and easy to listen to.

I'd recommend Pain of Salvation, but most people consider them just plain weird. Be, one of their concept albums, is my favorite.

Davin Townsend is another kind of weird, but Ocean Machine (his first) is very melodic and hummable. I turned a few songs from that album into ringtones and now most of my office hums along when my phone rings.

I'll second the Young Dubliners and Seven Nations, and will add to them my beloved Great Big Sea out of Newfoundland. High-energy folk music, some of which is Newfoundland trad, some of which is original songs the group writes themselves. They have a player embedded on their website's main page, so you can hear some of their songs there.

It doesn't hurt either that IMHO, the two lead singers are totally drop-dead gorgeous. ;)

And oh yes, it's worth mentioning that GBS' current bassist is Murray Foster, formerly of Moxy Fruvous, so any fans of theirs who don't know Murray jumped over to GBS may consider checking them out.

Cloud Cult is the newest band I'm a fan of right now. The band's only just hit the mainstream radar thanks to a GEICO commercial featuring their song "Lucky Today", but they already have multiple albums under their belt. I highly recommend songs like "The Deaf Girl", "Transistor Radio", "Take Your Medicine", "Chemicals Collide" and "Alien Christ".

Within Temptation: They're generally melodic, but they range from the really sad and pretty, like Forgiven, to the rockier title track off my favourite album. Another favourite is All I Need.

Lacuna Coil: Another melodic but rocky one, they do sad, they do covers, they do rock.

Apocalyptica: The vast majority of their stuff is instrumental although sometimes they do bring in some vocalists from other bands to do some singing on original compositions, they started out covering Metallica songs on cellos and then branched out into classical songs played in a heavy rock sort of way, but still on cellos. Hall of the Mountain King, Drive, and Life Burns (yes, that is the guy from The Rasmus), are some of my favourites.

Dope: More into the industrial rock, there are Dope who are where The Murderdolls stole some of their members from. They make an attempt to be a bit softer and more melodic, but most of the time they sound a bit like this, this and this (NSFW), although they do a cover of You Spin Me Round.

My Ruin: Are another one I'd say to check out, but I can't find very much of theirs via Google. There's their cover of Tainted Love, complete with lots and lots of pictures of Dita Von Teese, Terror which opened the album Speak and Destroy, and Miss Ann Thrope, which also featured the lead singer from Jack Off Jill.

A Perfect Circle: Soft, melodic, kind of pretty, most people can only tell half of what Maynard James Keenan is saying a lot of the time. Magdalena, 3 Libras, The Outsider (NSFW again), The Noose, and Passive are worth checking out.

I'll shut up now.

I've been on a big Bruce Springsteen YouTube kick recently, so have a couple of those.

And I haven't got time to find more links, but other classic rock bands I can name offhand are Dire Straits, John Mellencamp AKA John Cougar AKA various similar names, uh, and Bob Seger.

Other completely different artists I like: Annie Lennox (try the recent stuff as well as the '80s Eurythmics classics-- she's evolved a bit), Stevie Wonder (song recs: A Time To Love, Love's In Need Of Love Today, My Cherie Amour), and Skott Freedman (pretty pretty piano, pretty voice, openly bisexual, small-label.)

Anything by Afro Celt Sound System except Pod (an odd remix cd). Release, Seed (from the same album), Lovers of Light, and When I still needed you are all great tracks.

E.S. Posthumus is another favorite of mine. If you've been to the movies at all within the last 7 years, you've heard their music.

Right now I'm rather addicted to Thea Gilmore. Personally I think Avalanche, Rules for Jokers, and Songs from the Gutter are her best albums. She doesn't have much of a web or youtube presence, but here she is playing Avalanche

I'm also in love with Amanda Palmer (she used to be in The Dresden Dolls). Here's Oasis and Astronaut from her recent solo album.

Everyone has heard of The Clash, but not very many people listened to Joe Strummer's solo stuff, which is too bad. Here's Get Down Moses and Johnny Appleseed.

Sleater-Kinney is another defunct band, but they were absolutely amazing. Entertain, You're No Rock'n Roll Fun.

I'm also in love with Cocco, a Japanese singer from Okinawa. Here's Rainbow, Never ending journey, and Sweet Berry Kiss.

I've recently discovered Songs To Wear Pants To, which is odd/silly/nerdy stuff that tends to be lyrically along the lines of They Might Be Giants or Jonathan Coulton, although musically it's all over the map. It's probably not everyone's cup of tea, but if you like songs about robots, zombies, and/or sad toasters made of glass, it's worth checking out.

More generally, have you ever tried poking around music blogs (Hype Machine is a good place to start looking)? As someone who doesn't listen to the radio, that's where I get most of my new music recommendations. Well, that and Last.fm's "Recommended Artists" feature.

I'm one of those annoying people who will listen to the same artist for days.

Right now I'm listening to Terry Lynn a lot. (Her last.fm page has a lot of full tracks you can listen to. My favorites are "IMF," "Streetlife," and "Kingstonlogic.")

Tigarah is a lot of fun. Think funk carioca mixed with crunk and packaged in Japanese.

Also, massive, massive seconding of Ojos de Brujo.

If you want something more folk, Alina Simone has a popular (by which I mean, all the buzz on the blogs) album out right now called "Everyone Is Crying Out To Me, Beware," which is entirely folk-ish covers of songs by the late Yanka Dyagileva, a Russian punk artist. It's all in Russian.

I'm not sure how to describe Juana Molina (sorry, no previews there). Her songs are usually sweet, light, and pretty, with just an edge of quirkiness. They're in Spanish, since she's from Argentina. There may be previews on her MySpace page.

And what about Bollywood? I have way too much fun listening to A.R. Rahman's more recent scores, like for "Kisna," "Mangal Pandey," and "Lagaan." I don't know where you can preview them but he's easily pirated.

As far as finding new music, Last.fm is great if you use its recommended music tools or simply follow links from the pages of artists you like. I also like to read music blogs: Fluxblog, Music for Robots, and Aurgasm are my favorites right now. (Too lazy to link.)

My favourite song by theirs is Computer City but Chocolate Disco, Polyrhythm, Electro World, and Perfect Star, Perfect Style are all great songs of theirs too. And since I'm talking about J-electro, another song I'm really in love with right now is 5iVE STAR by Capsule. Happiest song ever!

I tend to gather songs and make playlists. One of the big hit playlists recently was something I made for my father -- he has been a Bo Diddley fan since he was fifteen, and I collected a whole mess of songs by different artists that featured the Bo Diddley rhythm (you've heard this, honest -- it's the beat that goes "BOMP ba-DOMP ba-DOMP, ba-DOMP DOMP"). Here's the list I came up with:

1. "Bo Diddley", by Bo Diddley himself.
2. "Hey Little Girl", by Dee Clark.
3. "Not Fade Away," Buddy Holly.
4. "Marie's The Name (His Latest Flame)", Elvis.
5. "Willie And The Hand Jive", Johnny Otis.
6. "Shame Shame Shame", the Supremes.
7. "Bad Blood", Neil Sedaka.
8. "Not Fade Away," the Rolling Stones. (It's their cover of the Buddy Holly, but is really, really different.)
9. "Magic Bus", the Who.
10. "Back In The New York Groove", Ace Frehley.
11. "Panic In Detroit," David Bowie.
12. "I Want Candy," Bow Wow Wow.
13. "Don't Do It", The Band.
14. "Love Is A Battlefield," Pat Benetar.
15. "Deathwish," The Police.
16. "Faith," George Michael.
17. "She's The One", Bruce Springsteen.
18. "Desire", U2.
19. "Who Do You Love", George Thorogood.

So musically it's all over the map (Bruce Springsteen and Neil Sedaka?), but it's got that same theme. (Yep, each and every one of these songs has that beat to it -- "Love Is A Battlefield" was the one that surprised me most, but listen to it and yep, BOMP ba-DOMP ba-DOMP ba-DOMP DOMP). And I got to end with "Who Do You Love" which is one of my favorite driving songs ever.

Also, their lead singer, Melissa Kaplan, has started her own band, Universal Hall Pass. So if you enjoy Splashdown, you can check her out. There's a few free .mp3 downloads on her site.

Mainstream notwithstanding, my favorite album of all time has got to be Emerson, Lake and Palmer's Brain Salad Surgery. The best way to listen to this album is flat on your back in a pitch black room, preferably with a dozen or so friends similarly sprawled out and the volume way up there. My favorite cuts are Jerusalem, Toccata, Karn Evil 9 (first and second impressions) and Still....

I don't know if any of the album is on YouTube. Given that it dates back to 1973 it's doubtful. But if you're interested, here's the Wiki article about it.

Yikes, that sucks. :/ Here are some more recs, all sorts of different genres - mostly I'm reccing the band and these are just my favourite examples:

Anything by Assemblage 23 - Let Me Be Your Armour.

Cradle of Filth -
Nymphetamine.

Emilie Autumn - Opheliac and Shalott.

Angelspit - Wreak Havoc.

Poets of the Fall - Carnival of Rust and the more upbeat Locking up the Sun.

Cobra Starship - The City is at War.

Cage the Elephant - Ain't no Rest for the Wicked.

Pendulum - Other Side.
