Han Solo was a furry?!?!
Han Solo originally had a Wookiee wife.

Screenwriter Lenny Ripps (Star Wars Holiday Special):

What was interesting to me was that Lucas started talking about Star Wars as if it was a real world. He said things like "Well, you know Han Solo is married to a Wookiee. but we can't say that." Now that was 20 years ago [in 1998], so my memory may be wrong.

According to starwars.com's Ross Plesset, however, his memory is surprisingly good:
As outrageous as Ripps's recollection sounds, there is evidence supporting it. Pat Proft corroborates it and an early draft of the Star Wars script (January 28, 1975) has Han Solo living with a furry female creature who he kisses. Proft also remembers learning that Han was raised by Wookiees, which is verified on pages 46 & 131 of Laurent Bouzereau's Star Wars: The Annotated Screenplays.

Maybe I'm just totally misunderstanding this, as I'm not a Star Wars fan. But this really, really bothers me:

"Well, you know Han Solo is married to a Wookiee. but we can't say that."

Is he saying that they can't say it because of the romance blossoming between Leia and Han? Or is he saying it implying that such an interracial interspecies relationship couldn't possibly be mentioned in the Star Wars canon of 1978?

Well, judging by the reactions in these comments it's just not done!

You can fly a ship with a wookiee, but you better not marry it! I have no idea where twileks rate on this.

In that case it's ok as long as it's a female Twi'lek, because they're hot.

I can't believe I just actually typed that. I don't really believe it. Well, female Twi'leks are hot. I'll stand by that one.

They are! We male-lovers got the short end of the stick on that one. It doesn't help that male Twi'leks look like they're about to choke themselves all the time...

I was about to say, "Am I the only one who'd do Kit Fisto? Or Aayla Secura? Or, preferably, both at the same time?" when I saw your icon.

OTP man. OTP.

Is there actually a character called "Kit Fisto" in the Extended Universe? That sounds like the name of a Bond character from a parallel universe where all the women in the Bond series have been replaced by muscled, well-oiled hunks.

He's actually a character who was created for the movies, but got really expanded out in the EU. He shows up in ep 2 in the big arena fight (he's the one "grinning like a pimp" when he uses the Force of C3PO). In ep 3 he's on the Council, and one of the Jedi who goes with Mace Windu to get Palpatine at the end. In the EU he has an... interesting... relationship with another Jedi, Aayla Secura. One of the hottest Jedi ever, and who runs around in tight leather-ish outfits instead of robes.

Also, he's perfectly designed for Japanese porn.

Actually, a large part of the reason I am boggled by this is because, as of the last time I was paying attention (c. the build-up to episode one), there was an absolute ban on interracial marriage in the Star Wars universe.

You could date (as long as it was a human man with a hot alien chick), and have all the slavegirls you want of course, as long as it was made clear that it was nothing long-term and everybody eventually ended up with a nice spouse of their own species. They even had to retcon Admiral Thrawn for awhile.

This policy may have changed since then, but at the time I had the impression it had come down straight from Lucas himself...

Star Wars was ALWAYS a modern myth in the Campbell style. It was never an homage to Saturday-afternoon cliffhanger serials. George Lucas has never had a sense of fun. GO OCEANA!

This. Yes, I realize fanfiction is all about branching outside the norm, but sometimes when canon beats you over the head with something, it actually sticks. The movie novelizations even made a point of it with things like the Trade Federation leader's reaction to Amidala.

My memory's a little fuzzy, but he basically has an internal monologue about how she's supposedly beautiful by human standards, but he just thinks she's overly pale (I'm not sure if he can tell she's wearing the white makeup or not), thin, weak-looking, and a little on the creepy side.

...how does one retcon Thrawn, of all people?

It wasn't a major retcon, but a lot of Thrawn's earlier appearances had descriptions like (paraphrased) "his glowing red eyes suggested not-entirely-human ancestry" and other things that strongly implied he was of mixed species. Later works quite firmly established the Chiss as a separate near-human species and eliminated the hint of interracial boinking in Thrawn's family tree, 'cause god knows having a species that's indistinguishable from humans except for the pigmentation makes so much more sense.

My memory's fuzzy on the Rogue Squadron books: did Nawara Ven have a relationship with a human?

I remember Human m/Bothan f (Gavin Darklighter/Asy'r Seilar) in Rogue Squadron and Human m/Twi'lek f (Face Loran/Dia Passik) in Wraith Squadron, and...um...the Tattooine female human pilot in the first Wraith Squdron book pretended to be married to one of her Gamorrean male pilots, but, not Human f/Twi'lek m!

I went on Wookiepedia after posting that, and yep, Nawara hooked up with Rhysati Ynr. According to Wookiepedia, those two, at least, wound up getting married. :D

Though the comics made Nawara ugly, IMO. The Twi'Chicks get to be hot, but not the dudes. It makes me a sad panda.

It seems not to apply to some of the more EU stuff. Either that, or the people at Lucasarts don't care about what one clone among three million is doing. 'Course, Atin did marry a twi'lek girl, which may be part of the reason that went by.

(Republic Commando novels, if you're interested.)

I didn't even assume it WAS Chewie (homosexuality being banned by Lucas, as far as I know, and me being 95% sure that Chewie is male), just that he had a Wookie wife somewhere.

Or maybe Chewie has more than one kind of bits down there.
