Oh, this should be fun...
I'm not sure if there's wank over this anywhere, so I'm posting this here instead of [info]clairvoyantwank.

Courtesy of ONTD, it looks like Catherine Hardwicke has been fired from the Twilight franchise:

http://community.livejournal.com/ohnotheydidnt/30413178.html

I hated the book and have no interest in seeing the film, but still, that seems a bit harsh. Didn't the film do well at the box office?

ETA: Via [info]holyheadharpy in the comments, an official announcement of Hardwicke's departure is here.

ETA #2:Now comes an article from Variety that is starting to make the fandom nervous. According to Variety, part of the reason for Hardwicke's departure is serious creative differences over the story for New Moon. Namely, Summit want more RPattz in the film, and Hardwicke disagreed. Also, they want the next film out ASAP:

http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117997013.html?categoryid=13&cs=1

The problem that stalled negotiations was that Hardwicke had strong opinions about what to do with the next installment, and so did Summit. The debate was how to focus the adaptation of the second book, which deals more with giant werewolves than vampires, as well as the long depression of Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), after her vampire lover (Rob Pattinson) leaves her. One issue was how to get more of teen heartthrob Pattinson into the film. (Rosenberg has figured out a device to achieve this.) But Hardwicke, burned out from her "Twilight" labors, simply wasn't willing to jam this movie with a script that still needed months of development.

[info]lion_lamb react to the news. Depending on how this all goes, it might be time to move this up to one of the wank coms soon. Anyone brave enough to go looking for how this is playing out in the fandom?

I'm not sure. Didn't she bring in some of the actors? I wonder what they think about her being fired.

The weird thing is, from what I'm reading, the European press tour for Twilight is still ongoing, so now Hardwicke gets to answer questions about why she was fired while she's trying to promote the film she made.

It might be a case of "didn't do well enough." I think Twilight came in second last week to Bolt, and lost out this week to Four Christmases. As much as I hate to compare them (because seriously, they aren't that alike at all), I think that if HP had stuck with their original release date, I bet you it would have been top of the list three weeks running.

But what did they expect? Twilight appeals to one demographic; squealing teenage girls (okay, two if you count squealing teenagers and mockers who are in it for the sparkling crazy). Of course Harry Potter is going to better.

HP certainly wouldn't be down to $13 million box office after only three weeks. Twilight was never going to do as well as the HP films but did anyone but the most delusional Twihard think it would?

If your theory is correct, I guess the folks at Summit. Still, it's made money and more of it than some of us thought it would.

It may also have something to do with the critical reception as well. Twilight didn't exactly bring in a lot of stellar reviews. Even some of the well known critics who liked it seemed rather dismissive.

That's both good and bad.

On one hand, she kind of made a huge step forward for female directors.

On the other hand... the movie was terrible in ways that could directly be blamed on her (besides, of course, SMeyer's terrible original story).

The bizarre timing of this makes me wonder if Summit has been planning to fire Ms. Hardwicke for a while now, but held off until doing so wouldn't pollute the movie's pre-release press coverage.

No matter how awkward it is to axe her job now, if their decision was made post-production, it would have been waaaaaay worse to announce it promptly.

You know, part of me really hopes they choose a male director, because the wank would be EPIC. Bonus points if he does a better job than Hardwicke (I'm blaming her for the VFX suckage, because she had good companies working on this- the only explanation I can think of is that she demanded more than the budget could handle, rather than working within constraints).

That said, holy craptastic timing, Batman! It really makes pretty much everyone involved look bad.

From [info]cattycass over at [info]lion_lamb:
Why do the Batman fans get TDK and Tolkien fans Lord of the Rings and we get a rushed everything on a shoestring budget?

I laughed. Hard.

Twilight Moms: Constantly bringing the LOLz

astewart72 on the Twilight Mom's board thinks Joss Wheadon should direct New Moon. Head, meet desk.

I think Joss Whedon would be an awesome choice. Not because of his Buffyverse heritage, but because he knows how to handle strong female leads, he is all about the pain (and there is a LOT of pain in New Moon) and could effectively handle the difficult relationship between Bella/Edward/Jacob.

Plus, he's an aweseome dude who doesn't just do things because of the money. He does things he's passionate about - so if he's into Twilight at all, I hope Summit talks to him.

I think it's rather telling that there's an emoticon holding an "I'm new here" in her post.
