ABC Considering "Fables"
ABC to bring DC's 'Fables' alive.

Thoughts? Opinions? Fantasy casting?

I was just going to post this.

Bad idea, because it's ABC. If it was another network, I could see it working. But ABC has a tendency to get rid of great tv shows. *grumbles*

Uh for fantasy casting, me as Rose Red? LOL.

Also, as an addendum, they'd have to get rid of parts of Cinderella's and Goldilocks' storylines. Maybe even Bigby's. It's not a gentle series.

Well, that's because unlike CBS, its shows aren't successful, and unlike NBC, its shows aren't so unsuccessful anything with critical acclaim will be kept alive while they fill the rest of the schedule with mind-numbing reality shows to pay for it.

I would've wanted it on HBO.

Everything should be on HBO. No boundaries make for great TV!

I don't even read the comic (though I own the first volume - long story), but I'd have picked HBO or Showtime. They're more willing to give shows a chance: see True Blood this season. They're also less likely to chance it after 3 weeks of decent ratings because they have less attention span than Jason Stackhouse in an art museum.

I don't think they'd take it. HBO just passed on Preacher and they're in the middle of developing A Game of Thrones. I doubt they're in the market for either a comic or another fantasy series, let alone one that's both.

I saw this and thought "you guys just canned Pushing Daisies and now you're optioning another quirky fantasy?" I don't actually think there's a market for this on mainstream television, as cool as it would be.

It really needs the Movie Treatment all the other comic book series have had. I know Heroes does well on ABC, but Fables is not a traditional superhero show.

This. Although it's possible it'll be good, then? I mean, either way it's probably going to get the boot, but maybe they can make it something worth buying the DVDs of.

I know. Granted Fables is much less quirky than 'love-it-or-just-can't-get-into-it' Daisies, (and undoubtedly much cheaper) but it's still in the arching fantasy category that's getting less love over the years.

They...canned it?

*sniff* Why does this always happen to shows I'm just getting into?

Respectfully, though... I don't think it's an entirely apt comparison.

First: as much as I liked the few Pushing Daisies eps that I saw, ultimately, I didn't stick with it because I found the premise more frustrating than charming. (I.e. the "can never ever touch" romance.) I guess I was supposed to be caught up in it and turned into someone who was pulling for them to find a solution to the conundrum, but that's not how I reacted. I've heard from other people that they had the same problem with the show. It was a *great* premise for a stand-alone movie, perhaps even a mini-series. Not so sure about an ongoing, open-ended show.

Second: don't underestimate the name-recognition value of the characters in "Fables". No characters can possibly have *higher* name-rec value. Therefore, any viewer can drop into the show at any time and recognize the character names, even if they haven't seen the previous installments; most viewers will bring with them some basic cultural understanding of at least the broad outlines of the characters' backgrounds (or attributes).

Yes, the interest of "Fables" is based on how it then puts a new twist on those characters, and it does have its own internal continuity which can't be gleaned from cultural knowledge and which builds up. But, for one thing, that still allows a show to be starting from a basic level of audience familiarity; and for another, if marketed correctly (and also, needless to say, if the show is made well enough in the first place), it can create interest by generating interest amongst its potential audience in the idea of "ooo, let's see what fun thing they do with *this* familiar fable/fairy-tale character!"

I would compare that advantage with that of fantasy shows that utilize familiar folkloric creatures but put their own spin on the concept -- all the various vampire shows and movies, for example.

(Then again, arguing against myself -- what this is directly comparable to, then, is an urbanized, contemporary version of Hercules/Xena; *related to* folklore/mythology, but putting its own twist on it. So... that could be good, in that Herc/Xena were certainly popular. But, it could be bad... because those shows weren't made by a conventional network, so the question remains whether ABC actually realizes that that's the model of success it's shooting for.)

Ergh. NO. I hate the idea of it as a TV series in general, but especially on ABC. It'll either suck completely (98% chance) or be amazing and get canceled in its prime (2%).

I think, either way, there's a 100% chance it'll get cancelled before its prime.

Kind of Want. If it comes through, and is awesome, ABC will say, "Hey! We have an awesome show! Clearly we must CANCEL IT AT ONCE."

If Fables had to go on TV, at least put it on a network that won't cancel a show in two weeks. =P

Hmmm, maybe they should make a mini-series out of it like, say, The 10th Kingdom. Or maybe they shouldn't.

I...really don't like Fables.
I keep trying and trying, I've read all of it, but it just comes off to my brain as more of an outline than a story. Maybe they're trying for fairy-tale voice, but it falls flat for me.

(Also--'to love, honor and obey,' Snow? Really? Really?)

Maybe I will like the show more?
