LJ, you're so ~robust~! And book recs.
Is anyone else unable to see LJ ScrapBook images? None of mine are showing up.

Also! I would love some good YA sci-fi/fantasy romance recommendations. I've got a teenage sister I need to buy presents for, and I want to show her there are much better things to be reading than Twilight. (Yes, she loves Twilight and that scares me.)

One more suggestion:

It's not fantasy and it's a bit dated, but I dearly love The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin.

Mairelon the Magician and The Magician's Apprentice, alternate universe-Regency Romance, modified. I still re-read those, so to me they stand up to the test of funtimes. The second has the actual romance, but both are friendship and companionship-heavy and so much fun.

Sharon Shinn's Summers at Castle Auburn a YA fantasy with a romance subplot.

Your sister might also enjoy Anne McCaffrey. When I was her age, I was crazy for the Harper Hall Trilogy and the Dragonriders of Pern. Start her out on either the Harper Hall trilogy which is McCaffrey's YA trilogy--Dragonsong, Dragonsinger, Dragondrums--or with Dragonflight, the first published book in the series. (I loved, and the thirteen-year-old in me always will, Lessa and F'lar.)

Bit late to the party - but I have to recommend the Firebringer Trilogy by Meredith Ann Pierce.

Okay, it's about Unicorns, but don't let that throw you off. They have gorgeous writing and a fantastic plot and there's definitely romance.

The books are:
Birth of the Firebringer</>
Dark Moon
Son of Summer Stars

People have already mentioned Westmark and Prydain, but I really liked Lloyd Alexander's Vesper Holly series, featuring a sort of teenaged female Indiana Jones.

I think this is also the point where I mention the OTHER Meyer -- Kai Meyer, one of my favorite semi-obscure YA writers. His Dark Reflections trilogy (The Water Mirror, The Stone Light, and The Glass Word) is a very beautifully written and extremely creative fantasy, though there isn't much in the way of romance...but, it kills me a little inside to see the Inferior Meyer push him off the shelves.

Also, hm. Meredith Ann Pierce's Dark Angel Trilogy (Darkangel, A Gathering of Gargoyles, and The Pearl of the Soul of the World) features a romance between a beautiful and cursed vampire-like being and a human girl who tries to free him from his curse...a bit Edward-and-Bella with the dangerous and impossibly beautiful man and a normal young woman, but with a stronger heroine and written with much more awareness of what's creepy and what's not.
