Christmas means Iron Dickery.
The book recommendation post got me remembering. My husband fell completely head-over-heels in love with Iron Man this year--even after swiping my copies of Civil War and Secret Invasion--and so I decided to pick up some Iron Man-centric comics for him tonight.

Things he's read and that we already own: Ultimates 1 & 2, Ultimate Iron Man (1 and 2, I think), Marvel Adventures Avengers, SI, CW, Avengers Disassembled, and the Matt Fraction Invincible Iron Man that came out last week.

Things that he likes: Iron Dickery. Seriously. He loves 616 Iron Man and finds MA Iron Man bland.

Things he doesn't like: Pre-late-'90s art (so no permed and mulleted Tony Stark, as amusing as I'd find it), Iron Man suits pre-Granov, possibly Maria Hill. The jury's still out on that last one.

I've had Mighty Avengers suggested to me, and I'm considering picking up Extremis for him, but I'm way more of an X-men fan and have no real idea of where to go with this. Halp.

Also, go ahead and turn this into a general comics-for-the-holidays rec post if you're in the same boat as me! I just really need these comics by tonight, since there's a sale and he's going to be too busy raiding on WoW to go so it's the perfect holiday shopping time.

I'd recommend any of the old Bob Layton run, but that's Eighties, so no joy. You might try a Google image search or eBay, see if anything strikes your fancy visually, and track down some stories that way.

The only thing I can think of is to maybe skim the Tony posts on scans_daily and see if there's anything you like? I don't know a lot about Iron Man.

Now, if you were asking about Spidey... there's some pretty good Irondickery in Civil War Spider-Man comics, too.

I haven't followed Marvel in years, so I really can't be helpful on that score, except to recommend Nextwave, which takes the piss out of their entire universe.

Crimson Empire is my "these have no redeeming value whatsoever" comics guilty pleasure.

Warren Ellis's Global Frequency is a two-trade self-contained arc about otherwise-normal people with one extraordinary ability who are suddenly called to help avert catastrophes, if you want to take a risk on something he's unfamiliar with.

My "everybody buy these" humor recs are The Amazing Joy Buzzards, about a band that tours the world fighting evil, and Atomic Robo, about a robot made by Nicola Tesla who tours the world fighting evil.

Extremis was really good, but then again I also bought it solely for the art. I have a hardcover copy of "Demon in a Bottle" too which was all sorts of fun to read (THE ROLLER SKATES, YAY!!!) but of course it's a pre-Granov suit soooooo...

On the grain of Civil War... "Fallen Son" was good too... and I'm really enjoying the current Captain America run (what? I like Bucky!). And yeah, now I'm not even talking about Iron Man anymore.

I also actually picked up Spider-man Noir yesterday and I have to say it was a really good read. The Vulture TERRIFIES me now.

Well, it's got pre-Granov armor, but Joe Quesada once wrote an arc in the late-90s (vol.3 #26-30) where the armor becomes sentient and basically acts like an abusive ex-boyfriend to Tony. The art's good, and the story is awesome.

BEST STORY EVER AHAHAHA.

And don't forget, it was all because of the Y2K bug!

Bwah. Oh, God, that story. Pure distilled slashy crack, and it's good.

There's Viva Las Vegas, which had the headdesk-worthy scene of French plane passengers getting on Iron Man's case for tossing a C4-laden terrorist trying to blow the plane up.

LOL, didn't Favs get so butthurt over its bad reception that he flounced off of it?

Marvel Adventures: Iron Man is fun. You can pick the digests up for less than 7 bucks at most book stories.

Has he read any of the pre-CW New Avengers? Would recommend all but 'The Sentry' arc because I kind of hate the Sentry. Also, NOT ENOUGH TONY.

Young Avengers. Read Young Avengers.

Here are a two guides to canon that may help:

http://likeadeuce.livejournal.com/932583.html

http://elspethdixon.livejournal.com/169859.html

I don't really know Iron Man, so I can't vouch for them, but it may help as a jumping-off point.

I can't recommend Fraction's Invincible Iron Man enough. He's managed to make Tony a magnificent bastard who, yes he's arrogant and egotistical, but by damn he's got REASON!

The first arc is a showdown with the son of an old foe. Great stuff.

On a side note, you might consider getting the two volumes of The Order, also by Fraction. It has a lot of Tony walk-ons in it and features Pepper Potts as the information source for the team. Incredible stuff, I'm just sorry that it didn't go more than 12 issues.

You know, the post-silver-and-red/pre-war machine armor was always my favorite look for the character. I like it when the armor actually looks...metallic.

Hypervelocity is a great arc, a sort of out-of-continuity romp with arrogant!Tony and lots of hardware. It's available as a TPB.
