Naruto Shippuden on Hulu? Sign me up!
Remember that post about Crunchyroll going legit? One of the first things they're picking up is Naruto Shippuden, which will run on Crunchyroll with subtitles an hour after the show runs in Japan for the paid members there. Joost.com, Hulu.com, and Naruto.com will run the episodes for free a week later. This will start with the next episode, running on January 8.

In addition, subtitled episodes will be uploaded to all above websites at 8/week until the entire catalog is available.

In related news, Dattebayo has dropped Naruto Shippuden from its subtitling rounds.

I'd like to start a betting pool on when the wank will begin.

It seems like the logical thing to do, I'd been wondering why they weren't releasing legit subs for years. Honestly, this is something I'd pay for, simply because I do like supporting the artists, and being able to support them while at the same time getting the content in something under a year (or more) after it originally airs.

I think I might have to sign up for this.

I would sign up, but I'm quite seriously flat broke.

From the sound of it you can watch it legit for free a week after it airs.

Looks like there is a problem with regions, I'm in the US, so this apparently isn't an issue with me, but from the looks of it others are going to have problems. Hopefully they'll get licensed in those regions soon too.

I can't play any videos on Joost and Hulu. Curiously, Crunchyroll seems to be okay. (too bad that I couldn't care less about the shows they stream).

Region lock is one of my biggest problems with anime streaming (which is otherwise a good idea), so if the streaming trend continues I hope they'll REALLY do something to include other regions as well because as it is...

I'm told that their dropping Naruto was in response to this move, basically so that they don't run afoul of copyright law.

That's standard procedure--once it gets licensed by someone, the fansubbers stop working on it.

LOL, a guildie of mine in WoW was just whining about Dattebayo dropping Naruto the other day... when I pointed out that he could/should just buy the licensed DVDs, he whined about BUT I DON'T HAVE MONEY and I DON'T WANT TO WAIT and I SHOULD HAVE FREE ANIME AND NOT HAVE TO PAY THE WESTERN COMPANIES.

Considering I work for one of those Western anime companies, my sympathy for his plight was... somewhat lacking. :P

But, OMG, shouldn't they just be happy that anime fans enjoy it!? It's not like you need money to survive or anything!!! And if anime companies go under, it's totally their own fault for expecting money! They should just rely on the magical anime fairies to keep them running!

I mean, all you guys just work there as a hobby, amirite? You don't actually expect to be paid like it's a job or anything.

Oh yeah, totally. My apartment is totally powered by the squeals of fangirls, dontchaknow. I exist only to please anime fans, anyway; my own health, wealth and comfort means absolutely nothing to me. We anime workers are like Ghandi, in a way!

Yeah, I'm somewhat wanky bitter over the whole thing... I was starting on a really cool series at one point, only to have the whole project cancelled because, well, the industry is not doing as well as one would hope. Recent surveys show that even though there are many more anime fans than there were previously, anime DVD sales are going down... hmm, must be the magical anime fairies.

Ick, sorry for the thoughts on yaoi, but it's a bit of a sore point with me. :P

Don't worry, it's a sore point with me, too. I love anime and have had one of my favorite anime discontinued because of entitled anime fans. Well, the series is still going in Japan, but I can't buy DVDs in the States anymore. I'm one of those weirdo anime fans that actually likes buying DVDs of my favorite shows and has trouble keeping up with them if I can't. My friends are still watching, while I'm just sort of "Nope. Waitin' for DVDs." They think I'm insane, but whatever. Someone's trying to get the rights to bring it back on DVD here.

I'm also working at a snail's pace to try and get a job in the industry myself. I don't want to see something that I would love to be my bread and butter go down the drain. But I've had to stop talking to my friends about downloading anime. The stupid excuses they use just make my head hurt. :/ And there's not reaching them. These are people who turned their noses up at 99 cent anime episodes.

Man, I've been bitching about this a LOT lately. Sorry about that.

Yeah... the odd thing is, I once was a big fansub fan, back in my university days, though mostly non-licensed (exception: I still have my fansubbed Sailor Moon VHS tapes, *shame*). I believed all the arguments about LOL FREE ADVERTISING etc... heck, on some level, I can still acknowledge and even agree with some of the sentiments. It was only when I started working in the industry myself that I began to realize the problem with even unlicensed fansubs... that the Japanese companies are still getting bilked, and that American companies may actually be LESS likely to translate something if they feel the market is too small and getting their free anime elsewhere.

To be fair, part of the problem is with the industry itself. It sucks that it takes months and months and months to license, translate, and release popular series like Naruto. While I don't agree with those that then turn to fansubbing out of impatience, I can at least understand their frustration. My hope is that, with the popularity of things like iTunes and YouTube, there will be new venues for official anime companies to release their stuff cheap, fast, and legit... Funimation seems to be making good strides. I have high hopes for the 99 cent episode model.

Of course, on a selfish note, part of me fears that it may result to more phasing out of dubs (since OMG EVERYONE HATES DUBS ANYWAY) which leaves me up a creek. :-\

LOL, I really do have a lot of thoughts on yaoi... of course, I did host a con panel on the topic once, so I sort of chew over it quite a bit.

Yeah, I'm hoping that stuff like iTunes and such will help. I think releasing more stuff online and at a faster pace would be a big step forward. Anime companies aren't saints, I know, but fans need to meet them half-way if anybody wants anything done. I think the problem is that, in some ways, they're both kind of working against each other.

I share that selfish fear. I would actually like to do some dub voice acting... but luckily there is a bit of a fandom for certain dub actors. I'm hoping that fan base will help keep it alive. I've also seen fans lament over anime that didn't get a dub cast. I think, as dub artists get better over the years, people are less aggressive. I don't think it's as cool as it used to be to hate dubs. I mean, it still makes you rad in too many circles, but I think that fad is dying out a little. I might just be having some wishful thinking though. But I have seen more positive attitudes towards dub work. The most negative experience I had was with someone who was just rude in general. (I only mentioned I'd like to do voice acting, no mention of anime, and they immediately said, "Well, I hate dubs, but I guess I'll watch yours." At least, I thought it was rude.)

I'm hoping the positive attitudes I've seen increase and aren't just isolated incidents.

Agreed that both sides need to work together on this as opposed to seeing each other as enemies... which is never a particularly conductive environment. >.>

I agree that dub actors seem to grow their own fanbase, which is good news for you! (sadly, dub writers don't get their own fangirls, *sadface*) I agree that the whole ZOMG EWWW DUBS thing isn't quite as all encompassing as it used to be. I do still prefer subs as a whole, and there are still some pretty bad and mediocre dubs floating around, but on the other hand, nothing is quite as satisfying as a truly good dub. In a way, it's like a new interpretation of the work... characters can be subtly different, yet still interesting and intriguing (for example, I find Brad Swaile's Light quite different to the Japanese Light in terms of his manic nature, but I adore his interpretation)

They should have fangirls! I love dub writers, honestly. (Unless they do a less than stellar job, but that's true of anything.) I've actually learned to appreciate you guys even MORE since I've tried doing my own translation stuff and have to do stuff like that for class. It sort of forces you to realize what you guys go through, even on a small scale. I've even seen entitlement fans become more understanding towards dub writers after taking some Japanese language classes because they learn it's not an easy language. (A lot of anime fans are under the impression it's a cut and dry, easy peasy language... which makes me laugh and cry all at once.)

I agree with you on the dubs. I tend to prefer subs, but I also love listening to dub work. Sometimes I prefer a dub when it's really well done. (Cowboy Bebop and Wolf's Rain are coming to mind.) Actually, I love watching bad dubs, too. I'm weird though. Anyway, it's nice to see the new interpretation as well, since some of the techniques used in Japanese acting just don't work in English. I'm gonna risk sounding like a total spazzwad, but in my private just-for-fun time I've tried acting out lines in Japanese. It really is a whole different kettle of fish. While one reading sounds good in Japanese, if do the same in English I sound like a total freak that people would refuse to let in their house.

Some REALLY don't get it. I've actually seen people say that fan appreciation should be enough for the creators, I guess because they are "artists."

LOL, that would certainly be amusing. XD

Eep, I'm not surprised people think that. One thing I know a lot of those fans don't realize is that the life of a Japanese animator SUCKS. They really don't get paid a lot; some of them live off of instant ramen. But oh, I guess they are supposed to sustain themselves off of the squeeing of thousands of fans, or something. >.> (/sarcasm)

To be fair, Shippuden hasn't actually been picked up by a DVD distributor yet in the US. It's only a matter of time, but they've already got a little under two years of backlog to release. The wait has driven me insane. Two weeks I can handle, but I'm not much more patient than that.

(Of course, I fully intend to support the final release product here in the States provided it's not complete crap.)

[info]usagivindaloo

I can definitely understand that. I do think that the long wait times in licensing (and the resultant backlogs) are a problem, and probably contribute greatly to the whole fansub issue. I do think that the process needs to be reinvented somewhat to speed up the releases Still, it's frustrating to have fans basically saying, "Bah, you're taking too long, we're going to get it NOW, and for free, and not bother with the licensed thing." (not you, of course, just the more entitled fans)

Ouch for retarted dumbasses. I'm in a sort-of-similar industry myself (radio) but hell, I'm not going to whine about entitlement when I pirate something. If I'm pirating, I'm pirating. If I'm buying it, I'm buying it. But jesus christ on a pogo stick, I'm never going to confuse buying with getting something for free.

tl;dr, people need to stop being self-entitled whiny s/h/its.
