Disney Buys Fanlib
Written up here by [info]stewardess.

(May shortly be wanky, but not provocative enough for [info]clairvoyantwank just yet, I thought.)

Isn't this old news or did it just become official? I remember there being talk about it before.

Maybe I am just behind the times? I hadn't heard...

That's what I thought. I also thought fanlib shut down.

FanLib shut down in August; there were rumors that Disney was going to buy it, but nothing really conclusive. They've just come public with the news.

This can only end in wank.

And start that way.

Not gonna lie, I looked at this post and thought, "This is destined to end up on Fandom_Wank. In fact, I think it probably should have been there to begin with."

From the day we arrive on the internet
And hesitant, type our first post
There will come a response
Ungracious and coarse
Or so we will think at the time

There's far too many opinions
More than we're comfortable with
But the 'net doesn't care
And we're not always aware
That we're making an ass of ourselves

It's the circle of wank!
And it draws us in
Thoughts on yaoi and ad hominem
Cults of Mean and Nice
Till we learn to cope
With people disagreeing
In the circle, the circle of wank.

Why? What does Disney want with Fanlib?

*Suddenly remembering the line "What does God want with a spaceship?"*

Perhaps I'm dense, but what is Fanlib again? Somehow missed it.

FanLib was a sort of attempted competitor to FF.net that presented itself as a regular fanfiction website to internet fans but attempted to sell itself to businesses as a way to reap fan creativity for profit. They were noted for their extremely sketchy Terms of Service. I still have their publicity brochure on my hard drive (found it a few days ago, actually) if you're interested.

Wait, what? They wanted to...sell? fan-created content back to the copywrite holders? That's, um. Hm. Good thing it folded I guess, unless the companies were planning on compensating the fans who's work they used at the same rate they would for, say, a member of the Writer's Guild.

I wonder what Disney wants to do with it.

Well, as far as I remember, what they ACTUALLY wanted to do was get fans excited for officially-backed 'write your own episode!' contests and the like, and have a restrictive terms of service that included signing away all the content you posted to FanLib or whoever. Possibly on the assumption that nobody was going to actually read or understand the terms of service.

They actually thought...

Oh, god. The stupid has a smell and that smell is charcoal.

Also, if they got sued for content you wrote, you would have to indemnify them. So, basically, no one who read the ToS actually signed up.
