LJ going under?
The bubble in social networking has burst, decisively. LiveJournal, the San Francisco-based arm of Sup, a Russian Internet startup, has cut about 20 of 28 employees — and offered them no severance, we're told.

The company's product managers and engineers were laid off, leaving only a handful of finance and operations workers — which speaks to a website to be left on life support. Matt Berardo, a Yahoo executive hired on last summer, is also believed to be gone.

Can you imagine the amazing bitchfest wankery that would go on if anything happened to LJ??? The internet would implode...

I hope that a widespread panic to copy/backup journals doesn't blow up LJ but good.

Because that's how these things usually end up.

I don't think they'll pull the plug entirely; that's just setting fire to their money, basically. I'm just really, really concerned because I do not want to move to another blogging platform, and I don't know where I'd go if I had to. I mean, I have an old Blogger account, but I have no idea how I'd adapt my current posting style to that.

I got a worried IM from a friend about this and this is the first place I came.

Glad to know the numbers are off. Not that we won't have mass panic today. Will LJ make a news post to calm people's fears (yah, right!) or stay mum which would be pretty bad.

If social networking with all the bandwidth-eating, whiz-bang gizmos goes under, maybe Usenet will revive.

About the only thing I'd miss are cat macros.
