RIP, GJ.
And GreatestJournal is dead.

http://www.greatestjournal.com

A week in the new year, and two journaling services are already dead? That's harsh. Check out the 403 error.

Didn't GJ already do a 'fuck you, get out' message to its users awhile back?

Dying, yes, when it disabled new user accounts, but not 'okay I'm going to crawl into this hole and die now' until nowish.

And a third site (a community blogging service called Soapblox) almost followed suit. Here is the message that greeted users this morning (now baleeted replaced by something less dramatic, but quoted for posterity on the front page of Daily Kos as Soapblox sites hacked? Info gathering thread). I also have screenshots, which I'll upload to the photobucket account I'll be creating later.

It was a good ride, but it's over.

Thanks for all the fish.

All these hackers messing with our stuff, and we here at SoapBlox have no clue what to do. We don't have enough knowledge, time, money, or care to fix it.

So I hope the Hackers are happy.

If you want the data from your blog, we will get it. But we are not going to try and restore anything.

Consider this the "We're Out of Business" post.

Most of the servers have been taken off line because they were being used to hack and exploit other websites. The hackers install this crap on servers after they get in. SoapBlox's ISP then takes the servers off line.

We do not know when they will come back online.

We do not know if they will come back online.

As you can see from the article itself, Soapblox is a major blogging platform for progressive sites and its loss would be a major blow to progressive politics online. You can also see that its potential loss is a major cause for wank and worry. Full disclosure, I'm there as "Neon Vincent" reassuring people that Michigan Liberal is still up.

As for the parties responsible, here is a screenshot of the mark of the people claiming credit (or being framed for someone else's work; people can't exactly tell).

Later today, the text I quoted above was replaced by the following, even though the URL is for the same post.

SoapBlox is a Phoenix?

I am nothing but a dramatic person. I am
sorry for that.

SoapBlox needs help. From all of you. How do we salvage this. How do we keep this going?

When you create something that becomes larger than yourself.

I apologize for being so dramatic. Again, I have a knack for that.

Despite the revision, the first few comments still reflect the original message. At least Soapblox won't be going under because of a hacker assault--not yet, anyway.

Consider the above a wank report. I'm up for suggestions as to where this belongs when I write it up more fully--clarvoyantwank, political_wank, otf_wank, random_lounge, or the trashcan.

BTW, one service that is being perversely (or pervertedly, given the nature of its proprietor) robust is commiejournal. Nebris makes his opinion/position known in two posts. So, despite the drama from earlier last year when Nebs was threatening to take CJ offline for lack of funds, it's still there. Surprise!

I'm betting it went down because people went to check it's status after the LJ layoffs. I know that's why I was over there yesterday. Funny enough, yesterday it was still re-directing people to insane journal.

AW! Sad to say but a lot of my memories in my pre-teen years could be traced back to Greatest Journal and periodically, I would go back and read a lot of stuff. Like all the communities I joined, and all the people I met. Oh and the graphix were insane. It's just sad to see a good site gone. Makes me think how long Myspace stays cool.
