Jackson Rathbone Talks Upcoming M. Night Shyamalan Film.

Due in theaters in summer 2010, "Airbender" has already begun to face a bit of controversy over the casting of white actors like Rathbone, Ringer and McCartney to play Asian characters — a concern the actor was quick to dismiss. "I think it's one of those things where I pull my hair up, shave the sides, and I definitely need a tan," he said of the transformation he'll go through to look more like Sokka.

Jackson Rathbone + tan = STILL NEITHER NATIVE AMERICAN NOR ASIAN.

*My boyfriend pointed out that it's not like blackface in that they're not doing it to exploit racial stereotypes, but I'm still deeply offended that Rathbone would summarily dismiss real and genuine concerns of many hurt and angry people with a tan.

atreyu - Jesse McCartney informs us that Avatar is an anime from Japan! He's been doing kung fu for like three hours a day with different ninjas and stuff! The cast is full of idiots.

	Well it just keeps getting ~~better~~ worse. I mean now it seems they had the offense to whitewash the movie they are now going to fill it with grade A morons as well. (Not that they weren't morons before, it is just they went even further than they had to) (Reply to this)(Parent)

You know, when the movie goes down in flames - which it will - I just bet the executives are just going to point to it as martial arts movies not being popular anymore, or the young-adult fantasy genre being oversaturated, or even Asian themed projects being too controversial.

I... I just can't bring it in me to get mad at him. I just can't. He just seems so excited about the part, and a lot of people DO think Avatar is anime at first. Hell, Avatar was in the anime category at ff.net for ages. His agent is probably the one who snared him the part, so he can't be blamed for the shenanigans.

I just want to pat him on the head, tie him to a chair, and make him run a three-day marathon of Avatar.

	Now that the initial reaction is out of my system, I have to agree. At least he didn't do a Rathbone, and he does sound pretty excited. I really want to see what the Aang kid thinks. I bet he's thrilled. (Reply to this)(Parent)
