Supposedly it's been substantially edited to comply with the judge's orders, in particular to contain original material and not just be regurgitating JKR's stuff all the time. You know, like he should have done in the first place?

Only difference is, if he'd done it in the first place I would have bought it.

I looooove the disclaimer!

So I looked it up on Amazon.co.uk.

Here are the two shining reviews.

Indispensible , 23 Jan 2009
By J. Medany "gaspodex" (Aylesbury UK)

Simply an excellent guide to the Potter Universe ...

Ignore the legal rows (basically down to greedy men in suits at the WB), If you want an excellent reference guide to the HP Universe then look no further.

As a reference guide it stands up there with the Dune Encylopedia as being an extraorinarily comprehensive to its subject matter.

Keep telling yourself that sweetheart!

And:

A Marvelous Resource, 21 Jan 2009
By Michael W. Perry (Seattle, WA United States)

If you want to understand the marvelously complex world that underlies J. K. Rowlings' Harry Potter from:

Abbot--Family name on a headstone in the graveyard in Godric's Hollow...

to:

zoological column--The Daily Prophet does a zoological column every Wednesday...

then this is the book for you. It contains virtually every imaginable person, place, thing and event in the tale, with a handy reference to the book and chapter that's the source.

One warning. I wouldn't suggest consulting this book the first time you read all seven volumes. You only get one chance to read a book for the first time. Make the most of it. Enjoy the tale as a whole in a way you'll never be able to repeat. But at some point, you'll want to understand the magical world behind the story. Then you'll want to consult this book, written by one of the premier Potter fans in the world and the host of the popular Harry Potter Lexicon website.

--Michael W. Perry, Untangling Tolkien: A Chronology and Commentary for The Lord of the Rings

First; shouldn't you be commenting on Amazon.com, surely it's cheaper to get it there than to send it all the way from the UK.
Second; oh, I see, you just wanted to pimp your own slightly related book.

Local Author Publishes Book After Harry Potter Lawsuit:

KENTWOOD - He's one of the biggest Harry Potter fans in the world. Yet, last year Grand Rapids' Steve Vander Ark became wrapped up in a lawsuit with the book's author.

They lost the suit, but Vander Ark's Harry Potter encyclopedia still ended up in print.

It all started with the website. If you want to know about wizards and spells, creatures and creations, the Harry Potter Lexicon is the place to go.

The site gets 25 million hits a year and has become a valued source for fans of the books. The producers of the movies have used it, even author JK Rowling.

But when Vander Ark and Muskegon publisher RDR Books decided to publish "The Lexicon: an Unauthorized Guide to Harry Potter Fiction and Related Material," the author went on the offensive.

"I'm a fan of her's, i didn't want to do anything that would upset her," said Vander Ark.

Warner Brothers and Rowling sued Vander Ark's publisher for violating fair use law.

"Our opponents felt that copyright law basically gave the author of a fictional series the monopoly on nonfictional commentary," said publisher Roger Rapoport.

Rowling said it was "Wholesale theft," telling the court she wanted to write her own lexicon.

Stanford Law School represented RDR pro bono in federal court. It was a precedent-setting case.

Technically Warner Brothers and Rowling won the lawsuit because they got their injunction. The original version of the manuscript was not published, but Vander Ark made the changes, most of those had to do with adding more analysis.

"What was added, was a lot more commentary," said Rapoport. "What was subtracted were references to non-fiction commentary books that she had done on Quiddich and Fantastic Beasts."

They focused on not giving away everything from the stories, but leading people back to the novels. There's even new information and facts about the books that surfaced during the trial.

"It's sort of a gateway back into the novels a reminder of who that character is, how they fit into the story," said Vander Ark.

The publisher is working to set up a non profit at Grand Valley State to help artists and writers with legal advice if they run into legal fair use issues.

You can also see interviews with SVA and Roger Rappoport here.

Okay, apart from the whole 'he published it anyway, did he learn ANYTHING from the lawsuit' factor, can I just boggle over the last name issue?

Vander Ark. It's a last name of Dutch origins, I am Dutch, I know how Dutch last names work. I will accept that names like these are weird to native English speakers where a last name is one word, but in that case, have the common decency to turn it into Vanderark. Just turn the whole thing into one word, y'know? Either go with the Dutch way of writing it, which would be 'van der Ark' or go with an Americanised version, 'Vanderark'. Just don't do this weird mix that's neither one thing or the other!

That disclaimer, LOL!

If I saw this display in the bookstore, I would have been SO tempted to secretly move the entire Lexicon collection to some obscure section where they may never be unearthed again.

I really hope no one gives me this book as a 'oh-it's-Harry-Potter,-you'll-probably-love-it' b-day gift. It'll be too difficult to keep a straight face while extending my gratitude.

Who puts a disclaimer ON THE FUCKING COVER of the book? Don't actually spend any money on a book designer or anything, RDR. You might start to look like a publisher of real books if you do.

What kills me is that JKR & the WB didn't get some sort of addendum to the judge's ruling that's like a restraining order for Steve's book *, saying that it has to be kept 100 feet away from her books in stores at all times. I feel dirty just seeing it so close to things SHE wrote.

* Along with a restraining order to keep Steve away from JKR herself, of course.
