Um, guys?
I keep trying to read my flist on LJ, and getting automatically redirected to Cash4Gold.com. It only happens for my flist; if I just go to a friend's journal or a community, everything's fine.

Is this happening for anyone else? Is there an update somewhere that I missed?

Can't say it's doing it for me either. I will say, though, (even though I'm sure I've said it before) that icon is the cutest thing ever. I love the adorable dweebery of that scene.

What's even more fun is imagining Patrick Stewart in the scene (not to diminish the young actor's performance; that he gets it so right makes the mental substitution much easier).

It was happening to me as well, although it stopped when I logged in.

It isn't happening to me, though for what it's worth, I'm a paid user. It sounds really creepy, though.

I can repro this. I'm a paid user on my main account, and even logged out, I don't see it on my main Friends list--but if I go check the Friends list of my non-paid other LJ, yeah, it repros there. It took a couple of seconds but I did get redirected to the ad URL. FAIL!

P.S. This isn't an issue with the users' browsers being compromised; this is very likely more of an issue with a broken ad getting out onto LJ's ad servers. I've seen this happen on previous jobs of mine. The fault is with the ad taking over the browser, not with anything local to your all's machines.

Thanks! That actually does make me feel a little better; I've been running all my antivirus stuff going WHERE ARE YOU HIDING and it was coming up blank. Good to know I'm not alone!

You're welcome! I saw something very similar to this happen on the last job I had, where one of the ads running totally took over the browser window when it loaded, no matter what page on the site you tried to hit. Very annoying.

I just flung a support request at LJ, hopefully that'll alert them to yoink the broken ad.

Is the account basic or plus? I can't reproduce it on my non-paid accounts, but they aren't plus.

It doesn't make sense for LJ to make it impossible to get to your friends page. It sounds to me like a classic symptom of browser hijacking.

Report it to LiveJournal. Anything that hijacks your browser is bad news. I had it happen a couple of times ages ago and they got the advert causing the problem taken down.

LJ Support volunteer here--we had a spate of these reports today, so it's not just you. Reports stopped a few hours ago, so we're keeping our fingers crossed that whatever was happening is fixed.

Somewhat randomly, but do you know if people are having trouble getting to LJ period? Because I've been unable to get LJ to load for the past five days (it's the same on all the computers here, but I can get to any other website just fine). At first I thought it was a virus, but I got the (potentially) effected computers reformatted but it's still fucked up and I'm still getting the same error, "Network Timeout - The server at livejournal.com is taking too long to respond."

I sent an email to support@livejournal.com, but that opened up a support request here...but since I can't get LJ to load, I have no idea if anyone responded. I've also talked to my ISP and they have no idea what's up :/

As far as I know, there's no major issue of people being unable to get to the site. The request doesn't have an answer yet: when someone does answer, you'll get an e-mail.

D'oh, I pressed send before I meant to.

Make sure you've tried the standard clear your cache/hard-reload the page thing. That will help a surprising amount of the time.

Well, I'm not sure you can get much more cleaned-out cache then reformatting your computer (or trying different ones that haven't been to LJ before), but I'll keep that in mind *g*

*L* yeah.

For what it's worth, it turns out that one of my ISP's server in the path between here and LJ broke and they're working to fix it overnight. Of course, I wish I had known this $600 ago (you know, when I called them the first time before I spent all the money and the tech never went, "Well, let's try doing a trace to see where this goes through..."), but it seems like that's what the problem is.

...you have no idea how relieved I just got, in a crazy fucked up way *L* I had the same Semagic error too, for the record. I made a post about it here on JF and it seemed like one possibility was a virus that's to be floating around the ads filesharing websites (Megaupload, etc). One of the symptoms seems to be that certain websites won't load and while I did have similar time out errors on other websites (Wikipedia, Cnet downloads), I spent all day Friday scanning with everything that everyone recommended and I came up with a whole lot of nothing. I also don't know if it's an ISP thing, but I have DSL from Frontier and live in New York, for what it's worth.

But sure, I'll pass along anything I get :)

(And unrelated, but is your username from The Broken Hearts Club? Because if so, you just cheered me up *g*)

Okay, this is just plain weird. I have (crappy) dial-up from Frontier and live in New York. (Can't get anything else out in the country.) I think I might have had time out errors with a couple of other websites, but probably wrote it off as the crappy dial-up being crappy.

Being stuck on dial-up, I tend to avoid the filesharing websites (why tempt myself with frustration) but I do use them when I can get to a high-speed connection with my Eee PC.

And I remembered your post on [info]random_lounge when I started having trouble connecting to LJ today. (The problem started for me, at least, after the internet started working again after stopping last night.)

Scans I've done have turned up exactly nothing as well.

But sure, I'll pass along anything I get :)

Thanks! :)

Wow. That does make it sound like it's a problem with the internet, because mine hiccuped on me right around when I had the problem too. If you don't mind me asking, what part of the state do you live in? Because the more information I can give them the better, probably. If you don't feel comfortable posting it here, my email is aposiopetically@gmail.com.

I live sort-of in the country (in Pine Bush, which is at the border of Orange, Ulster, and Sullivan counties), but it's had a surge of development in the last few years, so we've had high-speed for a while (my mom works from home and it's a requirement).
