Basic Cable Personality Clash Skirmish '09- The Ultimate Battle
An update from this post.

So last night was the huge Daily Show's Jon Stewart Vs Mad Money's Jim Cramer Battle! (Just look for the recent videos with Jim Cramer written near the thumbnail.) If you don't want to watch the whole smack down, here's a summary.

Oh, I'm sure they remembered. They were trying to create an event, a cable celebrity showdown, to improve their ratings. What they got was mown down, because they started out trying to beat him at his own game, and then actually sent Cramer to Stewart's own turf to do that, and just...no.

The dedicated TDS haters who're popping up here and there in the coverage (amid the vast sea of people who're just saying "PWNED, OMG") are basically sticking to the usual objection, that it wasn't funny. That Jon Stewart isn't funny, and isn't this supposed to be a comedy show?

No. Maybe that's what it started out as, maybe Jon still refers to himself as a comedian. But it's not really comedy any more than it's really investigative reporting. It's satire. There's a difference. And you don't pick a fight with a professional satirist and expect to come off lightly.

Especially a satirist who seems to be the only person who thinks that journalists/other newsytype figures have actual responsbilities to the people these days.

And is a proper pro journalist himself. With researchers. They tend to forget that too.

What I realized yesterday thinking about this is that the journalists don't get it. Jon Stewart is a comedian by choice, not because he's incapable of competent journalism. But he's capable and good at being both when he needs to be.
