The Last Airbender
I'm asking my students to look at race representation in media this week and I'd like to find a somewhat in-depth article on the casting of The Last Airbender. I'm not in the fandom so I'm a little afraid of the Avatar community, and all the news articles I found are rather brief. Failing an article, an in-depth rational response to the casting would be fine.

An article that mentions the rumoured casting of Jesse McCartney and the subsequent casting of Dev Patel would be great. Thanks in advance!

Check out Racebending.com. Lots of good resources there.

Ooh, I'd somehow missed that one-- thank you! So many wonderful and painful links.

Good, I'm glad! The site is such a labour of love by its creators.

Probably a little too biased for my purposes, but great nevertheless. Thanks!

Not sure if it's already in some of the links you got, but there's a great essay on deviantART here:

Thanks, it was a really good read but I hope my students don't find it because a lot of what they should be covering is in that essay ^^;

You might check out the Media Action Network for Asian Americans letter to the Avatar movie producer/s, which can be found on their website here.

The East West Players (an Asian American theater group, originally co-founded by one of the key voice actors in Avatar and to which several other of the voice actors belong) also wrote a letter to the movie producer, which can be viewed here. Whoo.

The Washington Post also did an article on one of the movie's casting directors coming to cast people of SE Asian descent as extras here.

Some of us at AAW also got interviewed for the NW Asian Weekly's article on "Avatar": Whitewashed?

Writer Derek Kirk Kim does a fantastic response here.

Ditto the above linked Racebending website, especially the FAQ and quick links section (not to toot my own horn for two of those links, heh..)

Thank you so much! Being so specific made things a little easier =P

I read your casting call post and predictably it made my blood boil. At least Heroes does it right.

If you're Japanese, wear a cheongsam! If you're Chinese, please come dressed in your ceremonial penis-gourd.
