No House wank?
How on Earth is there no wank about the latest House episode?



Was Kutner too "new" as a character for people to get truly wanky about his death, or is the fandom finally sane enough to see that the episode was pretty much the most hauntingly awesome thing that ever awesomed (hauntingly)?

That last photo of Kutner totally broke me ;_;



Or did the fact that Penn will be working for the Obama ministration appease everyone?

It would be nice if they'd written him out some other way, I think, though I'll admit it was lovely at the end.

There was minor wank on one of my moms' boards about someone dropping spoilers for the episode. That's it. I haven't seen the episode, but I admit I'm a trifle confused at what I've heard about what happened. Doesn't sound remotely in character.

I thought the episode was well done, but the "memorial page" on fox.com and the Facebook page with the "badge" you can put on your own FB page? Beyond tacky.

I know there's been a lot of sadness on my flist. I was pretty angry myself and wrote a capslock filled rant until I found out Penn is going to be working in the White House now. :O

But yeah, no wank. Surprisingly. Yet.

I don't watch House, but people were definitely wanking on mefi about whether the post on it (which didn't explicitly spoil it but said that the actor made a dramatic exit from the show) counted as a spoiler.

the episode struck me hard too, I hadn't seen any previews so I had no idea this was coming... I was in denial the whole episode about the suicide, because Kutner showed nothing, I mean nothing that he was suicidal. I thought clever murder off the bat and when House thought it was one too, I was relieved...until I saw the photo of Kutner, looking sad I thought then it hit me...it was suicide :(

Great episode, hope there is no real wank over it...

I haven't been watching the 2009 episodes (Foreman/13 was just... not worth it anymore) but Kutner was literally my last reason to maybe sit through them all at some point.

I think there's no wank because it's pretty much regarded as fucking terrible, yes?

I mean, props to Kal Penn for doing something he really wants to do. But that was just so incredibly poorly done on several levels.

I thought the initial BAM RANDOM SUICIDE was shoddy writing, but I did like the way they handled everyone's reactions to it, and I guess the writers and Kal Penn didn't have a lot of time to write Kutner out properly, so they did the best they could.

I liked that it was a suicide. I liked that they didn't listen to the tiny hysterical voice in my head saying "maybe Taub killed him and then he's going to jail and then! and then Chase and Cameron can get back on the team and then 14 will elope to Vegas and and House and Wilson can have sex on the diagnostics table!" because man, Kutner was my favorite. And I liked that it was suicide, because man, it hurts right.

I for one am very excited about his White House gig - it sounds made of awesome. It seems worth it to give up such a likable character to something that can actually be important.

I loved this episode, more so because it was so sudden and unexpected. I know that in a story you are supposed to foreshadow these things, but in real life it's never that easy. I appreciate that more than I want a nice storyline, I think.

Over on Ravelry, there was some confusion about whether Kal Penn himself had committed suicide. This was *before* Tuesday's announcement about the Obama gig, so what I'm wondering is whether there was anything in the ep that made them think that? Or are they just really, really unable to distinguish actors and characters?

My husband was miffed because we TiVoed the episode to watch Tuesday evening, and NPR spoiled it for him Tuesday morning.

He grumbled that it would have been fine to say that "Kutner" left the show to work in the Obama administration, but that they had no reason to talk about the character committing suicide because the NPR story had nothing to do with House or suicide.

On a Washington Post online chat, at least a couple of people were butthurt about a celebrity being whisked into an Obama administration job. (People were getting indignant on behalf of regular campaign volunteers who hadn't gotten plum jobs recognition for their contributions.)

I actually love the episode. I hate the fact that the character is gone, but I think that it's really powerful and moving to have the most optimistic character, the happy-go-lucky one, be the one who was secretly unhappy enough to kill himself. Because that's how it goes in real life, way too often. Someone's dead and you think you should've spotted the symptoms and you wrack your brain for every little detail that might've hinted they're unhappy...

Two of the best lines from the ep sort of sum it up for me:

Cameron: "Kutner hid from everyone. You didn't get a chance to save him. Nobody did."

House: When he looked happy, you assumed the pain was gone. It just got buried deeper. Until finally, he put a bullet--" *gets interrupted because he was saying that to the PARENTS*


So, yeah. It broke my heart, but it was good. I'm sad the char is gone, but at least he left with gravitas and his disappearance had impact.

I want to wank about it, dammit! I actively want 30% of the main/reoccurring characters on that show dead, and instead they had to kill off sweet, pyromaniacal Kutner? I know, yes, yes, actor leaving for greener pastures, but still. He could have died in a way that took other characters with him!
