Stephanie Meyer sued!...?
.Hollywood, CA (Associated Press) Production on the hit sequel to the popular vampire series Twilight have been halted among allegations of plagiarism by young author, Stephenie Meyer.

According to sources, Meyer has been accused of stealing the idea for her popular Twilight series of novels for young adults and teenagers from her college roommate, Heidi Stanton.
Stanton, 36, of Salt Lake City, Utah, attended Brigham Young University during the early 1990's and was for a time during their sophmore year roommates at a campus dormitory with the alleged author, Meyer. The Twilight novels have sold over 42 million copies worldwide, and have been translated into 37 languages across the globe. Meyer who claims the premise for her popular vampire series came to her in a dream in June of 2003. Just three short months later she had completed the entire novel with very little to no previous writing experience.

Allegations by Stanton, who is a stay at home mother to 4 children in Utah arose after she viewed the movie Twilight for the first time last week, shortly after it was released to DVD format. Stanton claims that she had heard about the novels, but with four small children at home has very little time to read for pleasure or go to the theaters to watch movies.

"Quite frankly, I was shocked when I began watching the movie with my husband last week. I immediately told him that she got that idea from me! I wrote a fictional short story with the same ideas when we were in college together," stated Stanton.

Lawyers for both sides were remaining tight lipped Tuesday when papers were filed in Utah for claims of idea infringement. However amongst the claims, production was halted on a Studio City California production lot where New Moon is finishing post production. New Moon was slated to be released later in 2009. At this time, that has been "put on hold" stated studio heads Tuesday evening when reached by phone. Mrs. Stanton's claims have some credence to them as she has documented proof that a short story with very similar idea was written by her in 1993 while she was a sophomore at BYU. English department chairperson Dr. Peter Benton was at the time a second year professor of writing and distinctly remembers Ms. Stanton's prolific writing style and the vampire story in particular.

"The story stood out in my mind, at the time, because it was more advanced than most sophmore students usually presented, also the vampire story stood out because I had recently taught a series of lectures on Bram Stoker's Dracula." claims Dr. Benton. "I felt at the time that Heidi had brought a very current and up to date look at a classic subject."

No word on when or if production will resume for New Moon. Requests for interviews with Ms. Meyer or her representatives went unanswered Tuesday evening.

I haven't found wank yet so I didn't post it at F_Wank, but this makes my heart ~*~sparkle~*~ with glee. If it's true.

My bet is that once she saw that in the movie, she went back and read the book and THEN filed the lawsuit.

Lord knows I barely have time to sit down and read stuff and I've only got one kid.

if it were me, i would've been suspicious of just the premise. but then i'd gotten quite tired of hearing about the book by the time the movie came out.

There's nothing really odd though about a story that takes place at High School and involves a human girl falling in love with a vampire (both Vampire High and Vampire Knight come to mind and both pre-date Twilight).

So if the story is true it's possible that Stanton didn't realize how similar the stories were when she heard that Meyer had written a teenage, vampire story.

Depending on how you're defining human, Buffy the Vampire Slayer comes to mind as well.

I would count it. BtVS focuses on more stuff than just romance but Buffy's relationship with Angel was an important part of the plot during the first few seasons.

Well, it says she's busy with her kids and etc, so it's entirely plausible she just had no idea. My aunt works full time and has two girls under twelve and hadn't heard of it before at all when somebody mentioned RPattz recently.

I can appreciate being too busy to read much, but if I heard that one of my old college roommates had written and published a book, I'd have to at least check it out of the library and give it a skim just for curiosity's sake.

Maybe she's just not a curious person or she hated Stephenie back in the day or something, IDk. But it still seems a little strange that she never even picked it up in a book store or Wal-mart or whatever and gave it a look.

Dude, I don't even remember my college roommates' names, and I'm six years younger than Stanton.

It's possible she just didn't connect it with her roommate. It's not like Meyer's name is real distinctive (and it's not her maiden name).

God knows either of my college roommates could have a bloody Nobel Peace Prize by now and I wouldn't know, 'cause I don't remember their names at all. And college wasn't that long ago for me.

If it were a roommate I got along with great, maybe. I'll be surprised if I remember this year's roommate's last name, or last year's second semester; we're not particularly close. First semester last year — I hope I do, she was nice, but we already don't keep in touch. If it was one of my first year roommates, definitely.

I also think we, that is, F_Ws, think of Twilight more often and know more about it than the average adult over thirty (TwiMoms excluded); I'm pretty sure my own mother wouldn't have a damned clue what I meant if I said "Twilight is so awful!" She'd probably think I had something against darkness, and if I mentioned it was a book I doubt she'd even think of vampires.

I hadn't heard of the books, until the movie came out. Why? Because they weren't in my demographic. I don't have anyone in the right age bracket to want to read them, and there are so many other books I want to read, that they wouldn't even be a blip on the radar.

The fact that she's got four small children also puts into the time constraints. So, depending on when she heard about the books, and finally made the connection between her old college roommate, and Stephanie Meyer, then, yeah, I can see it taking this long to click.

And if they lost touch, that adds to the time it would've taken. So, it's really not all that strange.

I just had my ten year high school reunion. Found out a guy I knew well in high school has been playing semi-pro basketball in Europe for the last five years. Didn't have a clue, even though several people swore it was in the paper (to which I have a subscription and read most days!)
