In the lit class I took in college that covered it, the professor himself hated the book to the point where he told us he wasn't going to make us read all of it, just parts, because it wasn't really fair to us. Also that people at the time were torn between the book being too scandalous and ungodly and it being ridiculously over the top puritanical.
