*sniffs* what is that I smell? Why, it smells like someone put a whole lot of wank in the slow cooker. I cannot wait for this one (I also cannot wait for the RiffTrax, but that's just me).

Okay... If they did that in a "League of Extraordinary Gentleman" way? I'd be over her fangirling like mad.

... But that's not Holmes. It really isn't. Maybe because I grew up on Basil Rathbone. Will I see it? Probably. Will I believe it's Holmes no matter how many times they shove the names down my throat?

No.

I never thought of myself as much a Holmes fangirl, but somehow that got my dander up. Why did they call it Sherlock Holmes? It looks like it would have been perfectly enjoyable with any other names instead of expecting us to stretch our disbelief to encompass new characterizations.

Erm. It looks like it could be a fun movie to watch. I could come at Holmes being a boxer, at a pinch ... but the rest of it? Well ... as I said, it looks like it could be a fun movie to watch. Holmes though?

I never thought to describe Holmes as "blundering" or Watson as "snarky," but those are the words that come to mind here.

I'm on the fence. On the one hand, I don't see Sherlock Holmes anywhere in RDJ's performance (though I grant selective clips may not be fully representative). On the other hand, Watson getting to be the dashing man of action? With Holmes making plain how much he relies on his friend? Sign me up! That's way more canon than a dozen Rathbone movies that make Watson out to be a buffoon.*

*Disclaimer: I have not actually seen any Rathbone movies (precisely because of what I've heard about what they did to Watson).

I'm of the Brett School of Holmes although I do enjoy Rathbone's performance along with countless others who have played the great detective.

This I am not sure about at all. Guy Ritchie has a "style" (for lack of a better word) that makes or breaks the film and it is not everyone's cuppa. I may have to give this one a pass but I am not going to write it off since the cast are strong actors and have proved me wrong in the past. I think the script is what is going to make or break this one.

So, it looks like a fun movie. But I may have to pretend it's actually something else, like some generic Edwardian action hero movie. So muchyes for the RDJ and Jude Law, but that is not Holmes. AND IF THEY MAKE HIM FALL FOR GENERIC FEMALE LOVE INTEREST I WILL HAVE TO KILL SOMEONE. Holmes does not fall in love except with Watson. That is so totally Watson's job to make Holmes jealous.

I'm currently of the mind to consider it - like the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen film - an AU Holmes story.

That way I can continue to love Jeremy Brett's portrayal and still enjoy the silliness that appears to be headed our way.

Watching Jeremy Brett as Sherlock Holmes is one of my earliest childhood memories. Having seen that portrayal and read the short stories I can't help but be apprehensive with regard to this new movie. Too much flash and bang for my taste and Holmes isn't supposed to be a ladies' man.

I sincerely hope this movie isn't as bad as the trailer is leading me to believe.

I think that looks fun. Canonical crack-addict Holmes! Boxing Holmes! Honestly, the biggest travesty of canon is the love interest. And the complete lack of historical accuracy, but it does look enjoyable.

I'm a Cushing girl, not Rathbone, while we're all comparing. I do kinda wish RDJ was clean shaven for it, but I can live with that.

I.. I... this isn't even Young Sherlock Holmes level.

I think I'm going to go reread my old Ruse comics so I can get something Holmsian without being.. this.

...

Although, I predict a marked surge of RDJ-cuffed-to-bed-naked icons in the coming months. Because even as a straight guy, I gotta say DAMN!

I've never actually seen a film version of Sherlock Holmes, just read the stories. So I have no loyalty to any particular actor, but this is a big "no" for me, all the same. I'm with the comments above: Looks like a fun movie if it were about somebody else.
