OSTs
On Fandom_Secrets, some one recently said they were ashamed to admit that they listened to OSTs to their friends, and I boggled. As I'm bored and putting off the housework, I thought I'd ask you guys what your favourite OST tracks are. Or even entire OSTs.

Do you like just to listen to them on their own, or do you just think they are awesome in the context of the film/show/game etc. etc. for setting the scene, or both?

Some of my favourite OSTs include...

Rurouni Kenshin OVAs. I love listening to these on their own and I think it goes amzingly with the OVAs)

The Village. (Whatever you may think of the film surely you must agree that the music is beautiful, even if it's not entirey to your taste. ;) It really sets the atmosphere in the film as well, but then I'm one of the few people who loves the film, so I may be biased.)

Some LotRs tracks. (I think the whole OST is good for the film, but I only like a few to listen to. The one presently on my MP3 player claims it's the trailer music, but I don't know. Also, the one in which one of the Hobbits sing is beautiful. And there is a Rohan one too, but I can't remember what it's called.)

Mulan 'The Haircut'. (I think the musical score on this film is wonderful, and really suits the film. I mostly love The Haircut, such determination packed into a short track. Some of the songs are a bit lacking, though 'I'll Make a Man Out of You' is always good for lols.)

The Lion King. (The OSTs are simply brilliant. I recently saw that again at the Lyceum, the woman who plays the part of Rafiki OWNS MY SOUL! She brought tears to my eyes, in a good way. I really must find out who she is. Brown Lindiwe Mkhize, the youtube recording is awesome and yet still does not do her enough justice.)

A Grisly Reminder (I'm not sure if this is off the actual film Halloween, or if it is just random halloween themed music. I just found it on youtube, lol.)

Some Harry Potter tracks. (I specifically remember liking 'A Window To The Past' just to listen to on it's own, but the soundtrack in general really goes well with the films, I think)

ETA: Also, thanks to F_S again, KOKIA, from Origin: Spirits of the past, kicks arse! I foget the name of the track. Chouwa Oto?

ETA the second: The Banquet/The Lengend of the Black Scorpion. Amazing soundtrack, I'll be buying it once I'm back at work, but my attempts to download it in the meantime are failing hard D:

I'm sure there are more, but these are the ones I remember off the top of my head.

Come, shamelessly share your OST love!

I love the Juno soundtrack, though I'm not sure it counts as an OST. Also joining you in the Lion King OST love.

Holy crap I love OSTs, although I like the ones that are more score-y.

My particular favorites are the Bourne Trilogy, The Shawshank Redemption, Ocean's #, The Royal Tenenbaums, Cowboy Bebop.

O Brother, Where Art Thou has one of the best OSTs EVER EVER EVER, but you have to have a certain amount of love for roots music for that one. (BUT IT'S FUCKING AMAZING)

I teared up at the Che OST (at least in the cinema), especially the Mercedes Sosa song (Balderama) ;_;

I'm not gonna lie, I love the Disney Hercules OST. And the Slumdog Millionaire OST is damn slick and awesome. Actually my favourite thing about the movie.

I love OSTs! My wedding processional was a Chrono Trigger remix, and the recessional was from the FFX Piano Album. Nobody batted an eyelid, except the gamers who were all "holy shit, that's awesome!" :D

FF7 and 8 are my overall favourites, but I regularly listen to songs from FF9, 10, 11, 12, Suikodens 2 and 3, Xenogears, MGS. The music is such a significant part of these games, and agree with bienegold above in that my favourite tracks are the ones that communicate the story without actively playing the game.

OSTs constitute a significant portion of my music collection. Some favorites include Gladiator, Fellowship of the Ring Pirates of the Caribbean, Children of Dune, Henry V, Last of the Mohicans, and Schindler's List. A good OST, in my opinion, is effective at establishing mood and atmosphere, and so I often listen to them while working on writing projects.

Pirates of the Caribbean (all of it) is my music of choice when I'm writing a fight scene.

I also have Chrono Cross and One Winged Angel on my iPod.

Van Helsing (only a couple, as I only like a couple)

I need to pick up some Hellboy.

Apopcalyptica's "Hope v2" from Chronicles of Vidocq.

The soundtrack to the first Ghost in the Shell movie has been one of my favorites for a long time. It's really nice to listen to on its own, and it added a whole other dimension to the movie.

The Cowboy Bebop soundtrack worked really well in the show, but I don't like to listen to it on its own much - except for a few of the stand out tracks. "Blue" can make me tear up, especially since it makes me think of how perfect it worked with the final credits.

... I listen to a lot of Bollywood, does that count? Not quite Bollywood, the soundtrack to Deepa Mehta's Water is haunting and gorgeous.

The Black Snake Moan soundtrack is fantastic.

(I'm only counting soundtracks that are made up mostly of songs that were created for the movie/show.)

Black Hawk Down. It's my favourite OST.

Is the one claiming to be from the LOTR trailer from The Two Towers? Because if it is, it's a remix of Clint Mansell's theme from Requiem for a Dream (I think they call it Requiem for the Ring?) and it's AWESOME. the version I have is 6.30mins of amazing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9tnZRs4tNE it starts from 1.35mins.

I loooooooove soundtracks :D I have all sorts on my computer. A few of my favorites are Batman Forever, Spiderman 1 and 2, all LotR, Hope Floats, Cowboy Bebeop, Wolf's Rain, Claymore, RD Sennou Chousashitsu, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, and Samurai Champloo. I could go on. I just stopped myself.

I was super excited when I got my hands on the track from this Star Trek trailer! It's just so epic :D

I listen to so many soundtracks, I really do enjoy them on their own. Sometimes I'll listen to certain ones to get certain moods going. They're great for background music when writing fanfiction. Writing something epic? There's a track or ten to get you in just the right mood. It's great. I might also use instrumental tracks as background music for videos of my pets...

The Usual Suspects is a great one for the background of tabletop RPGs, if you're going for suspense/creepy. I associate it too much with that to like it on its own, though.

Requiem for a Dream has some of the most gorgeous tracks ever. I listen to them a lot. And several anime soundtracks, as well - like an above poster, I think Yoko Kanno is great, and she's done a lot of anime soundtracks.

And I agree with you on the Mulan and Lion King, and will toss in Hunchback of Notre Dame. Disney may slaughter the story, but they do good music. ;)

yeah that baffles me, OSTs are cool, show tunes though I wasn't a big fan of though.

its hard to pick just one or a few OSTs when I have so many LOL, I think my guilty pleasure though is Alan Silvestri's Beowulf(2007) soundtrack. LOTR the complete scores also a fave and its hard to find a soundtrack John Williams has done that I don't love. Bear McCreary's work on BSG and Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles renewed my faith that TV shows can have meaningful soundtracks, though it is a rarity...

Gladiator soundtrack FTW! I love Track 4, which has got some of the most deliciously liquid trumpet playing it has ever been my pleasure to hear. The entire "Battle" track as well as the one later where Maximus is in the arena are also comprised entirely of Awesome, particularly the sixteen or so measures that make up what I like to call the Maximus Kicks Ass theme.

I agree with the above comment about the O Brother Where Art Thou? soundtrack as well; amazing stuff. And the entire LoTR soundtrack is a work of beauty from the first note to the last, and I'm enough of a nerd that I picked up the complete editions of all three movies' soundtracks, too. ;)

Other ones I adore: Casino Royale, and in particular the theme song, "Africa", and "Miami International". Goldfinger has another excellent Bond movie soundtrack, of course.

Also I must give proper love to the Raiders of the Lost Ark soundtrack, which I love with a mighty fangirly love, ever since we played the Raiders March in band when I was in middle school, the year the movie came out. Raiders is my all-time favorite movie, and the music is such an integral part of it that I cannot help but get a big goofy grin on my face every time I hear it. <3

I can't imagine why that would be embarrasing. I love soundtracks:

- Pretty much anything John Williams has done, especially the Star Wars films.
- The Piano (Hated the film, loved the music)
- Gattaca
- Requiem for a Dream.
- The Fountain
- Gladiator
- Lord of the Rings movies
- Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex
- Hellsing
- Don Davis' work on The Matrix: Revolutions (again, hated the film, loved the music)
- The Omen (Jerry Goldsmith ftw!)
- Hans Zimmer's score for the Lion King, not the songs so much.
- Pirates of the Carribean.
...there's probably more. X)
