OSTs
On Fandom_Secrets, some one recently said they were ashamed to admit that they listened to OSTs to their friends, and I boggled. As I'm bored and putting off the housework, I thought I'd ask you guys what your favourite OST tracks are. Or even entire OSTs.

Do you like just to listen to them on their own, or do you just think they are awesome in the context of the film/show/game etc. etc. for setting the scene, or both?

Some of my favourite OSTs include...

Rurouni Kenshin OVAs. I love listening to these on their own and I think it goes amzingly with the OVAs)

The Village. (Whatever you may think of the film surely you must agree that the music is beautiful, even if it's not entirey to your taste. ;) It really sets the atmosphere in the film as well, but then I'm one of the few people who loves the film, so I may be biased.)

Some LotRs tracks. (I think the whole OST is good for the film, but I only like a few to listen to. The one presently on my MP3 player claims it's the trailer music, but I don't know. Also, the one in which one of the Hobbits sing is beautiful. And there is a Rohan one too, but I can't remember what it's called.)

Mulan 'The Haircut'. (I think the musical score on this film is wonderful, and really suits the film. I mostly love The Haircut, such determination packed into a short track. Some of the songs are a bit lacking, though 'I'll Make a Man Out of You' is always good for lols.)

The Lion King. (The OSTs are simply brilliant. I recently saw that again at the Lyceum, the woman who plays the part of Rafiki OWNS MY SOUL! She brought tears to my eyes, in a good way. I really must find out who she is. Brown Lindiwe Mkhize, the youtube recording is awesome and yet still does not do her enough justice.)

A Grisly Reminder (I'm not sure if this is off the actual film Halloween, or if it is just random halloween themed music. I just found it on youtube, lol.)

Some Harry Potter tracks. (I specifically remember liking 'A Window To The Past' just to listen to on it's own, but the soundtrack in general really goes well with the films, I think)

ETA: Also, thanks to F_S again, KOKIA, from Origin: Spirits of the past, kicks arse! I foget the name of the track. Chouwa Oto?

ETA the second: The Banquet/The Lengend of the Black Scorpion. Amazing soundtrack, I'll be buying it once I'm back at work, but my attempts to download it in the meantime are failing hard D:

I'm sure there are more, but these are the ones I remember off the top of my head.

Come, shamelessly share your OST love!

- Pirates of the Caribbean
- Some parts of the LOTR soundtracks
- Harry Potter, especially for Order of the Phoenix.
- Friday Night Lights (movie and TV show both) - Totally introduced me to Explosions in the Sky, whom I love.
- The Chronicles of Narnia
- Twin Peaks (my copy disappeared and that makes me sad)
- Queer Eye for the Straight Guy
- A Mighty Wind
- Sweeney Todd (stage and movie)
- RENT (stage and movie)

If I could include Broadway cast recordings, this list would go on forever.

Starting with one that hasn't been mentioned yet: Battlestar Galactica. Bear McCreary's music is fantastic. Utterly fantastic. I am in love.

Also...
*The Bourne trilogy
*Gladiator
*Stardust
*Terminator: the Sarah Connor Chronicles (also Bear McCreary)
*Iron Man
*Star Trek 2009
*Halo
*Gelibolu
*Whale Rider

Also, Pan's Labyrinth, while not a favorite, is very good and worth mentioning.

Revolutionary Girl Utena
Run Lola Run
Strictly Ballroom (some of the songs are original)
Tous les matins du monde (particularly the last track "Sonnerie de Ste Geneviève du Mont-de-Paris")

This will be somewhat tangled as I just jot down everything which comes to mind... and I bet I'll forget quite a bit.

I worship at the altar of K'n'K - Kanno Youko and Kajiura Yuki - Escaflowne, Cowboy Bebop, .hack//sign, Kara no Kyoukai, you name it. Also Sahashi Toshihiko (Gundam Seed and Gundam Seed Destiny, mainly, although Full Metal Panic and Gunslinger Girl have quite some awesome tracks as well), since Code Geass Nakagawa Koutarou and Kuroishi Hitomi (let's be honest, the finale wouldn't have the punch it had if not for Madder Sky and Continued Story T^T).

Then Tenmon (<33333333333333 Especially when he teams up with Shinkai Makoto), Hirasawa Susumu (I love everything this man does, but if his compositions are added to a Kon movie, I get weak in the knees), Iwasaki Taku (Rurouni Kenshin and R.O.D. are superb). I also love Oshima Michiru's work for Full Metal Alchemist and Wada Kouji's work for Princess Tutu.

I also love the Titanic soundtrack (/embarrassing), Pirates of the Caribbean, Last Samurai, Kill Bill (<3 Kaji Meiko. On that thought, dito for Lady Snowblood), Harry Potter (although quite a chunk of it got a bit old by the third film), Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, 28 Days Later (<333333 Frank's death, forever and ever), Unbreakable and Sixth Sense (no matter what you may think of Shyamalan's films, the soundtracks are excellent), Bandits (a German film no-one knows but which has kickass music), Lola rennt (sort-of dito), Nightmare before Christmas, Romeo and Juliet (the one with Leo), Hero, Star Wars (classic, not the modern ones)...

On the side of TV soundtracks - Doctor Who, Lexx and quite a lot of Buffy and Angel.

On top of that, I also adore quite a chunk of Bollywood soundtracks (though can you call it soundtrack when pretty much everything is song?) - Kal Ho Naa Ho, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Mohabbatein...

Essentially, I'm a whore in regards to soundtracks =D;;;;

Okay, I am a soundtrack h0r, seriously. Most of my music library is soundtracks:

Bleach, all the HPs, all the Pirates, LotR, Independence Day, Lion King, Star Wars ( I think all six, but I KNOW 1, 2 & 3), Labyrinth, Gladiator, 300, Hulk, Iron Man, Transformers, Braveheart, Shrek 1&2, Cars, Eragon (movie sucked, music not so much), Doctor Who, Kingdom of Heaven, Chronicles of Narnia (both), Highlander, The Muppet Show, Ratatouille, Princess Mononoke, Treasure Planet, TMNT, Van Helsing, X-Men (first only), Batman Begins, Crouching Tiger/Hidden Dragon, Advent Children, The Scorpion King, Happy Feet, Top Gun, Avatar...

Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. I <3 OSTs/soundtracks with a passion. Need to go find some more that people have reminded me I want.

Indiana Jones
Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey
Forrest Gump
The Incredibles
The Little Mermaid
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
LOTR
Master & Commander
The Princess Bride
Shakespeare in Love

Damn, I have so many OSTs I don't know where to start! *browses iTunes*

FF7, 8, 9, 10, with X being my favorite. The piano opening ... ugh, kills me every time.

LotR.

SW.

WoW (though you get a lot of them while playing, they're still awesome).

Angel & Buffy.

BSG and Xena's The Bitter Suite.

Oh, my Conan movie tracks. <3

Enchanted, and to pair that with Ever After.

So many!

Soundtracks to Blizzard games are usually solid, though my boyfriend's brother teases me whenever he hears a Warcraft II song on my playlist that he should be constructing oil platforms or building towers. XD;

Mass Effect, which is total awesomeness. How awesome can it be you say? Well I open the game launcher just to hear the main theme. And the first time the galaxy map opened and the music played I nearly cried. So yeah, awesome.

And Snatch. Brilliant soundtrack.

Oh and the first Buffy OST. I ended up being a huge fan of most of the bands on it.

I am a musicals geek. Disney, Broadway, or just 30s or 40s MGM classics, I'm so there. Recently I've been listening to the 2000 London revival of Jesus Christ Superstar. Glenn Carter's voice is so awesome (Too bad that he's not "all there").

But yeah, Sound of Music, Evita, Avenue Q, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast... you name it. I'm a total nerd.

Repo! The Genetic Opera
The Silent Hill franchise has great music.
Edward Scissorhands I think is probably Danny Elfman's best. So haunting and whimsical.
Magnolia - The motion picture. Damn right I can have me some Supertramp!
Hellsing, the Gonzo series.
.... The Lost Boys
Also, I grew up on the Soundtracks to Flashdance and Footloose so those songs always make me happy.
*Grumbles at both the Footloose remake and the stupid revival of She's a Maniac*

And oh yes, I totally forgot to mention in my first comment on this thread:

As long as I'm grooving on the soundtracks of movies with Russell Crowe in them, Master and Commander, baby! Bring on the Boccherini and the Corelli, and the violin and cello love. <3

Also, Moulin Rouge, and any track thereupon where Ewan MacGregor opens his mouth and pure organic 100% YUM pours out. Good gods, that boy can sing.

I've been listening to Wall-E a lot lately. (<3 "Define Dancing") Ooh, and Coraline. (<3 "Mice Circus")

And although I liked The Dark Knight more than Batman Begins, I find BB's soundtrack a lot more fluid and more enjoyable to listen to. "Why So Serious?" is probably the best track out of the two albums, though.

I used to have a bunch of the Disney OSTs but I can't find them anymore. ;_; I sang along with The Lion King all the time and Aladdin and The Beauty and the Beast were also replayed many times.

I don't have many OSTs on my laptop. The Final Fantasy Piano Collection albums I have get replayed many times whenever I need some good study music. Pan's Labyrinth is pretty good as well. I have other OSTs but those are the ones that pop out of my mind right now.

I'll toss in a couple I haven't seen yet:

Boys on the Side was constantly on my walkman in HS.

Motorcycle Diaries made grad school reading much easier.

Pump Up the Volume was excellent, but missing the best song used in the movie (Cohen's Everybody Knows; it did have Concrete Blonde, though).

I used to love soundtracks; wonder why these are the only three I can think of that haven't been mentioned...

Yep, I love OSTs, too, like it seems many, many, many others do. I agree on the LOTR, Lion King (I have the Rhythm of the Pridelands CD, too -- great stuff), and O Brother Where Art Thou? STs, and I've got a list now of a few others to check out. Some of my other favorites are Spirited Away/Sen to Chihiro and the Dexter 1st season soundtrack ("Astor's Birthday Party" is one of my favorite instrumental pieces ever).

Hannibal - specifically the fake opera based on Dante's Vita Nova. The song is called Vide Cor Meum. I'm still disappointed Hans Zimmer and Patrick Cassidy haven't written it up as a real opera.

Excalibur.

Revenge of the Sith.

Prokoviev's film scores for Aleksandr Nevsky and Ivan the Terrible.

I love any and all soundtracks, pretty much to the exclusion of everything else. Especially when I can cobble four or five of them together to make a playlist that lasts for most of my workday. Everybody's mentioned most of my favorites, but here are some others (all video games, apparently):

-Phoenix Wright. The orchestral and jazz arrangements are excellent, but I even like the tinny GBA rips.

-Katamari Damacy. I haven't even played it (no PS2), and I adore the soundtrack.

-Super Smash Brothers Brawl. Twenty hours of fantastic video game music! \o/

And I've found that, for me at least, there is no greater music to write to (whether it be essays or fanfic) than the OST to Kingdom of Heaven.
