OSTs
On Fandom_Secrets, some one recently said they were ashamed to admit that they listened to OSTs to their friends, and I boggled. As I'm bored and putting off the housework, I thought I'd ask you guys what your favourite OST tracks are. Or even entire OSTs.

Do you like just to listen to them on their own, or do you just think they are awesome in the context of the film/show/game etc. etc. for setting the scene, or both?

Some of my favourite OSTs include...

Rurouni Kenshin OVAs. I love listening to these on their own and I think it goes amzingly with the OVAs)

The Village. (Whatever you may think of the film surely you must agree that the music is beautiful, even if it's not entirey to your taste. ;) It really sets the atmosphere in the film as well, but then I'm one of the few people who loves the film, so I may be biased.)

Some LotRs tracks. (I think the whole OST is good for the film, but I only like a few to listen to. The one presently on my MP3 player claims it's the trailer music, but I don't know. Also, the one in which one of the Hobbits sing is beautiful. And there is a Rohan one too, but I can't remember what it's called.)

Mulan 'The Haircut'. (I think the musical score on this film is wonderful, and really suits the film. I mostly love The Haircut, such determination packed into a short track. Some of the songs are a bit lacking, though 'I'll Make a Man Out of You' is always good for lols.)

The Lion King. (The OSTs are simply brilliant. I recently saw that again at the Lyceum, the woman who plays the part of Rafiki OWNS MY SOUL! She brought tears to my eyes, in a good way. I really must find out who she is. Brown Lindiwe Mkhize, the youtube recording is awesome and yet still does not do her enough justice.)

A Grisly Reminder (I'm not sure if this is off the actual film Halloween, or if it is just random halloween themed music. I just found it on youtube, lol.)

Some Harry Potter tracks. (I specifically remember liking 'A Window To The Past' just to listen to on it's own, but the soundtrack in general really goes well with the films, I think)

ETA: Also, thanks to F_S again, KOKIA, from Origin: Spirits of the past, kicks arse! I foget the name of the track. Chouwa Oto?

ETA the second: The Banquet/The Lengend of the Black Scorpion. Amazing soundtrack, I'll be buying it once I'm back at work, but my attempts to download it in the meantime are failing hard D:

I'm sure there are more, but these are the ones I remember off the top of my head.

Come, shamelessly share your OST love!

I'm embarrassed that I *don't* listen to soundtrack albums, although I pay attention to film and tv scores while I'm watching (learned it from my musician husband). I do own the two for Moulin Rouge, Topsy-Turvy (Gilbert and Sullivan, mostly Mikado), and Tous les matins du monde, an amazing movie about two French composers of the Baroque era and their differing approaches to the meaning of music.

Dude, I'm an OST junkie. Movie, animated series, game, whatever, just gimme it. I have several full OSTs on my iPod!

My two favorites are forever going to be the OSTs for The Nightmare Before Christmas and Wall-E. They're not my two favorite movies for nothing. I also really like a lot of Disney OSTs, too many musical film OSTs to list, too many Tim Burton film OSTs to list, Pirates of the Caribbean (all three, I thought the third had the best music), South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Banjo Tooie, Pokemon Diamond & Pearl, Kingdom Hearts, all the Digimon OSTs (even the ones for Savers, even though they're not nearly as brilliant as the previous ones)... I'm forgetting things, I'm sure I am.

Mostly game soundtracks. Try to buy them in disk form whenever possible. Some current favorites:

- deBlob - on iTunes, and highly recommended
- Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg - never played this game (it's now in my backlog, actually), but the music is so good
- Cave Story
- Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil
- Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire
- Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure - the translated songs are okay, but I prefer the Japanese originals
- Sonic Rush
- Startopia
- Ys Book I & II

Also, I'm more than a bit burnt out on Final Fantasy stuff, but would love to get ahold of the Dissidia OST...

Pretty much everything Shoji Meguro has ever done, with a special mention for Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne.

Also: Lunar 2: Eternal Blue, holy crap. Favorite game OST ever ever ever.

I have a huge love for RPG battle themes. I make playlists full of them. The Grandia series has some really nice ones.

I've been listening to the ARIA OSTs for a week now. I caught the first episode of Aria the Animation at Anime Network On Demand and holy crap not only is it scenery porn, but music porn, too. Actually, I only have the OSTs for the first and second series, not Aria the Origination yet, but I'm working on it.

It's pretty much all Choro Club with some songs by Round Table feat. Nino.

Link to full-length acoustic version of the ED "Rainbow" by Round Table feat. Nino

I've also started listening to the Gunslinger Girl OST, and like earlier comments said, the Death Note ones are frigging awesome. But I'm crazy for the Aria OST, so they haven't had much play time.

I used to play O Brother, Where Art Thou? and Moulin Rouge and Beauty & the Beast quite a lot, but then I lent my MP3 player to my mom and my laptop's power thingy broke, so I stopped listening to music at all for about a year.

Oh, wait, has no one mentioned the Amélie soundtrack yet? I scanned the comments and didn't see. It's one of my all-time favorite CDs, OST or not. I think I was really drawn to the Aria OST because they're quite similar, though one is more Brazilian acoustic and the other is more French with accordions.

Looking at my library sorted by albums, I also have the OSTs for Almost Famous, French Kiss, Mona Lisa Smile, and a fan-made OST for the Fry & Laurie Jeeves & Wooster series. (I think I have the OST for Romeo + Juliet somewhere, I just have no idea where. And ditto for another Disney movie - maybe Lion King?)

- Fushigi Yuugi
- Cabaret (revival version, with Alan Cumming and Natasha Richardson)
- Lord of the Rings (especially FoTR and TT)
- Labyrinth
- The Crow (the only movie I own both the soundtrack and the score for - so, so great)
- Velvet Goldmine

Mmm, soundtracks. I have almost the entire Cirque du Soleil catalogue, and there are certain composers that I will always buy the soundtrack, no matter how much the movie or series blew. Yann Tiersen, Taku Iwasaki, and Yoko Kanno, for a few, and Bear McCreary has recently joined the ranks. Also, random assorted things I've got:

- Coraline
- The Nightmare Before Christmas
- Slumdog Millionaire
- Charade (because Henry Mancini will never be not awesome)
- The Last Unicorn
- Labyrinth
- Iron Man
- Snakes on a Plane
- O, Brother, Where Art Thou?
- Wanted
- Haunted Mansion (the ride, not the godawful movie)
- Toonami (some awesome, awesome person posted all of the techno intros that went with the cuts between the shows)
- Marie Antoinette
- Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
- The Royal Tenenbaums
- Moulin Rouge (both discs)
- Across the Universe
- Lost in Space (another crap movie, but the soundtrack was good)
- Avatar: The Last Airbender (someone ripped all the music bits the Track Team posted online)
- Tsubasa Chronicle
- .hackSIGN
- Trigun
- Blood+
- Lord of the Rings
- Eureka Seven
- Glory
- Wonderful Days
- Angel Sanctuary
- Fantasia (original and 2000)
- Tarzan
- Wall-E

Soundtracks and scores are My Thing. I'm obsessed with 'em. I catch the tunes like an earworm and they stay stuck in my head for YEARS until I get hold of a copy of the original and play it to death. I don't know when they became Seriously Uncool to listen to. Hell I've got the complete leatherette-cover special editions of the LotR scores, and remember when the Gladiator OST was in the top 10 albums chart, so they can't be THAT anoraky.

Favourites:

The Final Option/Who Dares Wins (1982, Roy Budd) - Fave Track: SAS or Nothing
Ordinary Decent Criminal (1999, Damon Albarn) - Fave Track: Kevin on a Motorcycle
Heathers (1988, David Newman) - Fave Track: Petition Montage/JD Blows Up

Longest Standing Unconquered Earworms:

PD James (26 years and counting)
Saracen (20 years and counting)

The last score I bought was Doomsday (2008, Tyler Bates) which fits in well on a loop with Escape From New York and The Terminator... And I'm going to stop talking NOW 'cause scores? YAY!

My list of can't live without them OST's.

Tank Girl - It just rocks so hard!
Transformers (The Score) by Steve Jablonsky
Queen of the Damned OST
All of the most recent Doctor Who Soundtracks -- Brilliant brilliant stuff.

Also I'm really digging these:

True Blood OST (Got mine from iTunes, yay for bonus tracks!)

I've never seen the broadway show but once I listened to "As Long As You're Mine" I was forever hooked
Wicked OST

I've also got a huge soft spot for the The Parent Trap (1998) - minus the last three tracks

Also anything by Hans Zimmer is perfect! But my favorites by him are

The Holiday
King Arthur
The Da Vinci Code and
Angels & Demons are some of his best stuff.

I can't name anymore OST or else I'd be here all day. But before I go I'll toss in one more.

Repo! The Genetic Opera

Tons of OSTs. Tons. Enough that it's probably easiest to list the composers:

John Williams, James Horner, Michael Kamen, Nobuo Uematsu, Yasunori Mitsuda, Yoko Kanno, Martin O'Donnell... Jeremy Soule, Michael Land, Y. Minobe and T. Maeda, Yoko Shimomura, Garry Schyman, George "The Fatman" Sanger... Menken and Ashman, Howard Shore... Alexander Courage and Fred Steiner, Jerry Goldsmith, Jay Chattaway, Dennis McCarthy, Ron Jones...

I like the Sharpe soundtrack. Picked it up for £5 in Virgin once, and it's been on heavy rotation ever since. It's about half original music written for the series and half traditional English folk songs sung by the guy who played Hagman - he's got a lovely voice.

WTF I listen to traditional folk songs? Why yes, yes I do indeed.

I also love the Rose of Versailles soundtrack. Actually, I love lots of anime music. I'd have the bloody Sailor Moon music on constantly because it's *so pretty*! And Captain Harlock - I would kill for a Captain Harlock soundtrack.

Oooh, I just want to trawl iTunes for soundtracks now...

I love film scores. I love soundtracks. There are SO many good ones out there! John Williams alone has contributed significantly to my CD collection.

Incredibly long list of favourites: Star Wars (the full film versions. Every single note from the OT films. Gives a new appreciation for the role of music in films); Raiders of the Lost Ark, Hook ("You Are the Pan". That man can write for flute like no one's business), Jurassic Park, Azkaban, Troy (go ahead and laugh, but I love Our Lady of Soundtrack Sorrow), Gladiator, PotC, LotR (air violin FTW), Corpse Bride, Edward Scissorhands (oh man, Ice Dance), Brokeback Mountain, National Treasure 1 and 2, Batman, Mr. Holland's Opus, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, X-Men, The Big Chill, The Blues Brothers, Forrest Gump.

I know I'm forgetting some...

Lion King, of course, a classic.

Anastasia :D. One of my favorite musicals as a kid, still love the soundtrack.

And finally:

Phantom of the Opera. I dunno if Broadway counts, but I listen to it loads. Fave play by far.

I loooove OSTs! I'm always awkward when someone ask me what kind of music I like, because it sounds like cheating.

Disney (Mostly Lion King, Hercules and Beauty & the Beast), PotC, Dr Who (Song of freedom make me feel so happy, and of course, Doomsday), Owen's theme in Torchwood, HSM, Peter Pan (still trying to find it, every time I have the money to buy it, it sold out: Flying, I do believe in fairies), Titanic, Sister Act, Scrubs.

X-Files, Superman's theme and all these musics able to make me feel like I'm watching the film/episode just with a few notes. There's room for a Van Helsing's joke, here.

OSTs were what spurred me on to my lifestyle of corruption and thievery on the internet!

I love Gladiator, Fellowship of the Ring, the Lion King (King of the Past makes me CRY EVERY TIME), Juno, the Death Proof OST. Actually almost any Tarantino OST is amazing. Also I challenge any FF7 fan to listen to the Advent Children soundtrack without peeing their pants. The music from any Katamari game is like crack for your ears. Also the soundtracks to any Miyazaki movie are fantastic. Spirited Away makes me get a little teary-eyed at times. There are a few amazing songs on the Prince of Egypt soundtrack as well.

I also must pimp the soundtrack of the more recent Solaris movie. The movie was crap, the soundtrack is amazing. Additionally, any soundtrack by Yann Tiersen (Amelie, Goodbye Lenin, Tabarly) is amazing amazing.
