OSTs
On Fandom_Secrets, some one recently said they were ashamed to admit that they listened to OSTs to their friends, and I boggled. As I'm bored and putting off the housework, I thought I'd ask you guys what your favourite OST tracks are. Or even entire OSTs.

Do you like just to listen to them on their own, or do you just think they are awesome in the context of the film/show/game etc. etc. for setting the scene, or both?

Some of my favourite OSTs include...

Rurouni Kenshin OVAs. I love listening to these on their own and I think it goes amzingly with the OVAs)

The Village. (Whatever you may think of the film surely you must agree that the music is beautiful, even if it's not entirey to your taste. ;) It really sets the atmosphere in the film as well, but then I'm one of the few people who loves the film, so I may be biased.)

Some LotRs tracks. (I think the whole OST is good for the film, but I only like a few to listen to. The one presently on my MP3 player claims it's the trailer music, but I don't know. Also, the one in which one of the Hobbits sing is beautiful. And there is a Rohan one too, but I can't remember what it's called.)

Mulan 'The Haircut'. (I think the musical score on this film is wonderful, and really suits the film. I mostly love The Haircut, such determination packed into a short track. Some of the songs are a bit lacking, though 'I'll Make a Man Out of You' is always good for lols.)

The Lion King. (The OSTs are simply brilliant. I recently saw that again at the Lyceum, the woman who plays the part of Rafiki OWNS MY SOUL! She brought tears to my eyes, in a good way. I really must find out who she is. Brown Lindiwe Mkhize, the youtube recording is awesome and yet still does not do her enough justice.)

A Grisly Reminder (I'm not sure if this is off the actual film Halloween, or if it is just random halloween themed music. I just found it on youtube, lol.)

Some Harry Potter tracks. (I specifically remember liking 'A Window To The Past' just to listen to on it's own, but the soundtrack in general really goes well with the films, I think)

ETA: Also, thanks to F_S again, KOKIA, from Origin: Spirits of the past, kicks arse! I foget the name of the track. Chouwa Oto?

ETA the second: The Banquet/The Lengend of the Black Scorpion. Amazing soundtrack, I'll be buying it once I'm back at work, but my attempts to download it in the meantime are failing hard D:

I'm sure there are more, but these are the ones I remember off the top of my head.

Come, shamelessly share your OST love!

Mulan's haircut sequence is one of my favorites, too. As for a full OST, the Myst III:Exile OST is some of my favorite ambient music for writing Sci Fi and Fantasy, as it has plenty of dark, intense moments and calm, light moments. All the Myst soundtracks are good ambient, actually, but the only one I own is Exile.

Oh, yes and the super-rare (d/l off a fan site) Arcanum soundtrack, which is like steampunk for strings junkies.

13,000 out of the 16,000 songs in my music collection are in the \Soundtracks\ subfolder :>

Favored soundtracks... um... hm.

• anything .hack (anime mostly; I only have a few game tracks, having not played them)
• Cave Story (PC game)
• GARO (tokusatsu series, really impressive OST)
• MOTHER3 (GBA game)
• RAMA & Shivers (both Sierra point-and-click adventure games)
• anything Kow Otani, for that matter :D Gundam Wing, Outlaw Star, Zoids/ZERO, Shadow of the Colossus...
• and Zoids Genesis! Hot damn, that is a really nice soundtrack.
• DOOM for some delicious nostalgia.

I also collect Rockman/MegaMan music and remixes like candy. I'm currently up to 1,568 files (totaling 1.34GB -- yay for console formats saving space).

I.. will stop now before this comment is a hundred lines long :D

Reposted because, deh, I write gud. 8>

I have whole OST playlist, plus separate ones for the Narnia, LOTR, PotC and Nolanverse!Batman.

But I am a shameless Danny Elfman fangirl, and anything Michael Giacchino does (especially his Lost and Pixar stuff = ♥) goes on my automatic download list. Oh, and the Serenity OST has some awesome themes, and also, Joe Hisaishi's Howl's Moving Castle score (Jinsei no Merry-Go-Round, ahhhh.)

This thread has just inspired me to dig up that old Killer Instinct OST that's been wasting away in the computer drawers.

The game might be a bit forgettable, but the soundtrack is still awesome. K.I. Feeling and The Way U Move are still fun to listen to.

I've also got the Goldfinger OST. In addition to "Gooooooold-fing-eeeer!" I also love Oddjob's Pressing Engagement and Dawn Raid on Fort Knox.

Would MIDIs from video games count? Because 1/8th of my MIDI collection are Mega Man songs (Wily's Castle. All of 'em.), and another 1/16th are Sonic songs(TORNADO Scramble FTW!). We've got a Japanese CD of Sonic Adventure remixes, and we've also got the Japanese Yu-Gi-Oh OST.

But... OSTs are awesome. :( There is no shame in that! It's funny to see this posted because just today I dug out my "The Best of Slayers" OST since I've been catching up with the new anime as well. One of my favorite series ever.

Other OSTs I've loved:

- Escaflowne
- Evangelion
- Xenogears
- Persona 2, 3, and 4
- Final Fantasy VI
- Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
- Beauty and the Beast
- The Little Mermaid

I know there might be a few others but those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. :O

On top of all the great recommendations people have brought up (I tend to go by composers... Klaus Badelt, Hans Zimmer, Steve Jablonsky, James Newton Howard, Howard Shore, Underworld, Brian Tyler, Don Davis, Asche & Spencer, Marco Beltrami, Brian Reitzell, Reinhold Heil, Paul Haslinger, Tan Dun, Clint Mansell... among others), I would also point any score-gasmer toward http://www.streamingsoundtracks.com It's my staple online radio station whenever I'm at work, and has introduced me to some awesome ones I've never considered before.

Pirate of the Caribbean (all 3),
National Treasure,
Man on Fire (creasy dies kills me),
Dragonheart,
Braveheart,
Last of Mohicans,
Schindler's List,
La Marche de L'Empereur,
Pan's Labiryth Lullaby,
Black Beauty Theme (Danny Elfman), ,
Brokeback Mountain
and finaly the Quebec's film: Aurore (which you can listen to samples here )

And well, there's a lot more but that would take time and space

My absolute favorites that I listen to repeatedly out of the context of the canon and can remember off the top of my head (…that last one's a big one):
• Dragonheart's OST makes me tear up every time. Moreso than the movie, actually.
• Suikoden I and Suikoden II, and ANY of the official remix CDs with BGM from any of the games. guh ♥
• Chrono Trigger.
• Final Fantasy VII.

There are definitely others that I remember in which I ping on very specific tracks/arrangements, but waaay too many to list.

Not counting musicals, the only OST I have on my computer is, um, one that has all the bgms for the DiC version of Sailormoon. Like, the ~negaverse~ music and the transformation music and stuff. It's pretty fun.

Other than that, I'm not really a big OST person? There've been a few movies that I thought had really good soundtracks, but they're not really original soundtracks. Like, the Garden State soundtrack is basically a mixtape, so I don't count it. Maybe it's because I'm not really a big movie buff? Listening to soundtracks has always struck me as a thing for people who care more about movies than about any other form of media, whereas for me, it's kind of at the bottom of my list.

AMERICAN GRAFFITI AMERICAN GRAFFITI AMERICAN GRAFFITI. Introduced my 80's born ass to a bunch of awesome old music. I now own most of Buddy Holly's recorded catalogue.

Lord of The Rings and Blues Brothers seem like a given.

The Incredibles. I think the same composer did the new Star Trek. He's pretty much made of win.

Me, Myself & Irene - I've never seen the movie but for whatever reason I got into the Steely Dan covers on this album and periodically give it a new listen every now and then.

Oh, OH! Speaking of anime music, I also love all the music from NANA. Trapnest, Blast, I love it all. Whether or not Blast's music is actually "punk", they spun pure musical gold for that show. Anna Tsuchiya <33333

C'mon, where's the love for both the Titanic OSTs? The first especially is probably in my top five albums I can't live without.

I also enjoy:
-Transformers 2007 OST: "Optimus Prime" is probably my favorite track. Gorgeous.
-Chronicles of Narnia (both): "Lucy Meets Mr. Tumnus" is my absolutely favorite out of all of them though. It's just so beautiful.
-Slumdog Millionaire
-Harry Potter
-Wall-E
-POTC
-Star Trek 2009

HO SHEET THIS IS A TON OF COMMENTS.

So I haven't looked, but just in case no one has mentioned it: Everyone needs the anniversary Utena CD set with the bonus CD. Because you haven't listened to Utena without Bossa Nova. Hawaiian-style, and techno remixes of "Absolute Destiny Apocalypse."

I love the D.Gray-man OSTs. Kaoru Wada is fucking brilliant. Of the songs on them, though, my favorite is probably the most popular -- the Musician's Lullaby song "Tsunaide te ni Kisu wo" (the lullaby played on the piano by Allen in order to restore the Ark)
