Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea
Miyazaki's film Gake No Ue No Ponyo is coming to the States on August 14 (two weeks after I move back home - guess who's carting all her younger siblings to the movies!). The voice cast includes Liam Neeson, Cloris Leachman, Tina Fey, Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, Betty White, and Lily Tomlin, with Miley Cyrus' sister Noah as Ponyo and the Bonus Jonas Frankie as her friend Sousuke.

In the movie, Ponyo is a baby goldfish who wants to be a human girl. Thanks to a young boy named Sosuke, she actually begins achieving this dream, and goes to live with him, upsetting the balance of nature in the process.

Here's a trailer.

Yay Ponyo, yay Miyazaki, yay Tina Fey, and yay family/children's movie starring a girl who isn't a princess!

See, I read this as Porno on the Cliff by the Sea, and was a little surprised.

But yay! :D

OH SNAP. This has the voices of Cate Blanchett and Lily Tomlin? I AM SO THERE.

(Why do I not have an excited icon yet?)

And she's sent to save the world, according to the trailer...? I keep hearing the original wasn't about that. Hmm.

Yeah, I'm hoping they didn't alter the plot from the original. I do trust Lassiter, though, he really seems to have love for the source material.

The terms of Disney's contract with Studio Ghibli stipulates that they leave the films uncut.

That said, I'm still very surprised they released Pom Poko here on DVD.

She's kind of a princess -- or the daughter of a goddess, at any rate. IIRC, at least -- it's been a few months since I've seen it.

I'd totally see the English dub were it released here just for the Betty White action. I wonder if she's the grouchy one. :D

I can't waaaaaaait. It's been too long since the last Hayao Miyazaki movie. (Earthsea? Meh.)

Right--that's why I specified Hayao Miyazaki, and went meh at the last, non-Hayao Miyazaki flick. Hurrah ambiguity.

I'm really looking forward to seeing it! It's actually coming out in the end of July here since our dub version is getting translated straight from Japanese (though I'm going to watch it in Japanese anyway). I haven't seen a Miyazaki movie in theaters since 2005, I'm excited.

I have been insanely excited about Ponyo since it was first announced. Additionally HOMGYAY TINA FEY!

(Although the poster kinda reminds me of Finding Nemo a bit. Not to mention the plot is like The Little Mermaid...)

Oh, that's the movie that's been prominently displayed in basically every store in Japan that sells DVDs, huh? I didn't really know anything about it until now. Anyway, it sounds cute, and I find Disney's dubs for Miyazaki's films are generally top-notch these days, so I look forward to dragging my own younger siblings to see it.
