In Which Our Intrepid Author Reveals Her Inner Asshole
Ah, we are all familiar now with the time-honored tradition of professional published writers flipping their shit on the internet, no?

Add Alice Hoffman to the storied list.

The Executive Summary: using that ubiquitous new tool of social networking, Twitter, Ms. Hoffman lashes out at the literary critic of the Boston Globe, posting 27 tweets of ringing outrage (including the phone number of the critic, tastefully redacted from the Gawker article and thankfully no longer available on Ms Hoffman's now AWOL twitter feed). Outtakes are included, as well as a conversation in comments about the various literary and personality charms of Ms. Hoffman.

Obviously there is a lot of wank in Alice Hoffman's cute little meltdown, but I'm not seeing a tremendous amount of wank in the reaction (I did not, however, read all 42 pages of reaction at Gawker, so who knows). Am linking here mostly because this sort of thing no longer triggers my personal threshold of wank reporting, and strikes me more as a pathetic curios of irrational human behavior instead.

Enjoy? :)

Wow, and she hits all the classics of a flounce too! The reviewer isn't allowed to review her books, the newspaper sucks, and she's being a feminist. And then she left Twitter!

It's so hard to take rants like that done on Twitter seriously. Possibly because my brain starts picturing things like "Fuck, there's my word limit. But I'm still mad! ::post, type more, repeat::"

Weirdly I find having a gigantic flounce on Twitter slightly less dumb than when they do it on their blog. I guess I have low expectations for Twitter!

Nomen est omen, I think. Twitter makes people act like twits.

... Who?

In all seriousness, I had to Google her. Ms. Hoffman, you're not a big enough name to even dream of acting of like this. Not that anyone would take you seriously, anyway.

I saw her work a lot when I used to work in a bookstore. Never picked up her stuff or heard any yeas/nays on her, though.

Cripes, though. The review wasn't even that bad. Way to shoot yourself in the foot.

Emphasis mine:

I’m sorry if I offended anyone. Reviewers are entitled to their opinions and that’s the name of the game in publishing. I hope my readers understand that I didn’t mean to hurt anyone and I’m truly sorry if I did.

An apology dodge so nice, she used it twice!

I've liked Hoffman's books in the past, but let's just say I'm not too heartbroken that the last couple I read I practically got for free...

I just loved Practical Magic. I read it when I was in my midteens. Before the movie.

Oh, I love the movie, too. But the book I loved for the urban fantasy genre even back then...I don't think I'd classify it as such. I just loved the fantasy element in our every day world.

Ah, yes, since trying to send your readers after someone on their personal phone number is not meaning to hurt someone. Clever girl.

“I feel this whole situation has been completely blown out of proportion,” Ms. Hoffman said in a statement forwarded by her publisher,

Stop interpreting her flounce from the wrong perspective!

It's not 42 pages of comments at Gawker. It's only three. It's 42 comments directly to the post (that other people can then respond to in nested threads).

Add Alain de Botton to "Authors not taking critcism well":

http://www.steamthing.com/2009/06/review-of-alain-de-bottons-pleasures-and-sorrows-of-work.html

See the 4th comment, especially these bits:

"You have now killed my book in the United States, nothing short of that. So that's two years of work down the drain in one miserable 900 word review."

and

"I will hate you till the day I die and wish you nothing but ill will in every career move you make. I will be watching with interest and schadenfreude."

I haven't read the book (nor even heard of him before this) but if he writes books like that, I might read 'em ;)

I think the eerily calm tone really makes this author stand out. No all-caps, no frothing or exclamation marks, just a cool statement of everlasting hatred and polite farewell.

That guy is an inspiration, I tell you. If I ever get a bad review on my fanfic, that is how I want to respond.

"You have effectively killed my story on the Internet. I and all my descendants shall curse you and your works forever. I hope all your belongings get destroyed by a laser and all the food you eat be infected with e.coli and rabies. I will point and laugh as you die in agony. Good day."

If you keep reading the comments, there is some doubt as to whether the author is really the person behind that comment.

Ah, so this is what James Urbaniak was talking about. And he was right -- this kind of stuff is better suited for LJ than Twitter. I like my "Screw you, bitch!" posts to be filled with pedantic tl;dr rants, especially when authors are involved and their ability to write is challenged.

Authors Behaving Badly is one of my favorite categories of wank. The Heidipology makes this one even better.

But carrying out your grudge against a critic on Twitter? That's pretty sad. C'mon, Hoffman--you're a writer! You want to publicly attempt to rip your critics a new one? Do it with style, for crying out loud. Build up a full head of steam and write a grand, proper, full-bodied rant--none of this doling it out 140 characters at a time nonsense.

Chancery Stone does this shit right. Go forth and learn from the best, Alice.
