RIP Karl Malden
And another celebrity death! Seriously, people, WTF?

Spaghetti sauce.

Actor Karl Malden Dies at 97

Posted by: Scott Coppersmith

Brentwood (myFOXla.com) - The family of Karl Malden says the actor who won an Oscar for his role in "A Streetcar Named Desire" has died at age 97.

Malden had been in failing health in recent years.

Malden's family informed the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences of his death on Wednesday. Malden served as the academy's president from 1989-92.

He made his screen debut in the 1940 movie "They Knew What They Wanted," and was praised for his role as Mitch in the 1951 classic "A Streetcar Named Desire."

His greatest fame came as Detective Mike Stone in the 1970s TV series "The Streets of San Francisco," in which he co-starred with Michael Douglas.

Malden also was a pitchman for American Express in a series of commercials airing over 21 years.

Aw, I LOVED him! My favorite role of his was the over-loud, but whipped, preacher in 'Pollyanna.'

Seriously, people, WTF?

It's not entirely unusual for people in their late 90s to die, even if they're *gasp* actors.

I know. It just seems like a lot of people are dying all at once.

However, there are probably millions dying every day that we never hear about because they're not famous, so...

Only a little over one hundred thousand statistically, sayeth the almighty Google. But when you consider how many people are famous for something, I'd be surprised if out of the 900,000 people who die every week, a couple people weren't famous.

Isn't this why deathwatch was created?

Yep. I don't mind the occasional ones, because those were actually noteworthy enough to post, but if the reason they're noteworthy is because other people have died recently it gets to be a bit much.

Every death is tragic, but not every death is a shock.

If you gotta go, dying in your sleep at age 97 sounds pretty good to me. RIP.

Personally, though I think Karl Malden was a brilliant actor and I'm terribly sad for his family, I don't think this belongs here. It's neither terribly shocking nor related to someone with such widespread fame that everyone knows their name. When RPattz is tragically killed at his own wedding by drowning in the tears of myriad Twihard fans, and his body is magically transported away by Daniel Radcliffe, that's fannish. Not so much with this.

And regardless - is it totally appropriate in a death post to reference the original source article with the cut tag "spaghetti sauce?" Really?

I agree. If something's going to be in fandom lounge shouldn't they be someone that's overwhelmingly fannish? (MJ was overwhelmingly fannish. Your example works as well, though now I want to see it.)

Because he totes doesn't have a fandom. He's not young or pretty, so no one cares he's dead!

Wow. You skipped like 1...2...3...758 steps in logic there, Sparky. Saying you should probably post a celebrity death in a community specifically for reporting celebrity deaths doesn't exactly make me ageist or lookist.

This! I mean, if someone has a big impact on popular culture or dies suddenly (because, dude, who saw Billy Mays coming) then that makes sense for being posted here. Michael Jackson was a given because he was a name everyone knew. Farrah Fawcett was an icon to an entire generation. Billy Mays... okay, I can see some difference in opinion on him. He wasn't exactly a household name but everyone knew about THAT GUY who screamed on TV so here was a part of pop culture. Additionally, a fandom was beginning to form for his show, Pitchmen (full disclosure: I'm a big fan of Pitchmen so his death affected me more than people who were not fans- it meant more to me).

However? A man who has lived a long and, hopefully, fulfilling life that is not a regularly recognizable name... Not so much. This really should have been put in [info]deathwatch.

Okay, I beg to differ, here. A lot of us had no idea who this guy was, especially non-Americans. In fact, there's no reason why a non-American would've heard about this guy.

Agreed. I don't know who this man was, and I also don't know who the lady was in the other post a bit earlier. Not that I mind terribly, but if there is a comm for these kinds of announcements, it'd be nice for people to use it.

That he also got an Oscar for his role in "Streetcar Named Desire," was co-lead with Brando in "On the Waterfront" and with Michael Douglas in a long-runnng TV police procedural is, of course, one of those mere quaint curiosities of a bygone age.

(Horribly reminded of Paul Newman's death, when salad dressing was the first referrant).
