You are hereby banished from the Kingdom of Squee
Over the course of the recent warnings controversy, I kept seeing phrases like: "As an exiled BNF myself..." "I was forced to leave fandom years ago..." "...she was kicked out of fandom..."
...and this isn't the first time I've heard it.

I've been active in various fandoms for about 15 years now and I still don't understand the concept of being "kicked out"; nor have I seen such a thing occur.

What does it even mean? You get a court order to stop cosplaying or writing fanfic? The postal service intercepts your zine submissions? Ninjas come in the night and steal all your DVDs? I'm utterly bewildered. It seems awfully vague, not to mention unenforceable.

Having been a part of a fandom where the active fans are a fairly tightknit group, I've seen it be applied to that tightknit group slamming someone and his/her work and fannish contributions to the point that there's no one willing to interact with that person for fear of the same treatment. No one's forcing that person to stop being a fan or to stop trying to interact with the fandom at large, but if the fandom has a core group and that core group doesn't want you around? I've seen people be made to feel very unwelcome, and that makes the fandom not so fun anymore, and why stick around if it's not fun anymore?

Adding on to my comment above: For a larger fandom, like, say, Harry Potter, the definition of "kicked out of fandom" might refer more to a particular corner of said fandom, like a couple of similarly themed LJ communities or the like.

I voluntarily left a small fandom because of the treatment from the 'core' section of that fandom. And it seriously harshened my squee on the original media. I eventually got some of my squee back but I won't go near that fandom. Plus I have a hard time finding new fandoms because of the experience.

I presume that by 'fandom' the complainers are referring to their ... circles, groups, what would be a good word for this? I've seen people driven out of mailing lists and Usenet groups, but they could always just move to - or form - another group focused on the same object-of-fandom.

Not only that, fandom is different things to different people. I mean, for example, I've heard "fandom" referred to quite a few times as the fic-writing corner of things, with satellites out in the vidding and art sections. When you section out fandom, it becomes a lot easier to "exclude" someone from it - you can be a fan still, but you're not in fandom.

Plus, as also stated above, if you're run out of the core of fandom, you're pretty much an "outcast." If you're banned from the major groups - say, you're in Hetalia fandom and you're banned from hetalia@lj...as I understand that, that goes a large way towards excluding you from fandom. There are other communities to be sure, but yeah.

I can see being forced out of a LJ/mailing list/forum but not fandom itself.

I've never been "kicked out" of a fandom before but if I was, I'd simply make my own sandbox to play in. Because I figure if I'm unhappy with the fandom then other people probably are too and they would join the new comm.

I twitch when anyone declares themselves a BNF. 1. Why would you want to be one. 2. A great deal of people I would think of as BNFs don't want the title and certainly have more class then to declare themselves as one.

It really depends on the size of the fandom. If it's relatively small, and a clique of people are determined to get rid of you, they can just ramp up the nastiness/try to turn people against you until being in the fandom just isn't worth the pain/

I was part of a very small fandom--AG. The fandom is mostly made up of older women or their younger/teenaged daughters, with a middle range of people like me who grew up with the dolls and are now adult collectors. A huge amount of the ones who weild the power/influence on the two largest boards (both under full lockdown) are stay at home moms, Christian, and conservative.

I got banned from one board in a giant sweep after several people challenged a new rule that was pretty much "no paganism in public", directed at me. My group was accused of "hacking" which we had never tried to do. I was banned from the second board for taking down my own posts after a blowup over an off topic picture, and the head of the board basically called me the ringleader for having the audacity to...be a mod on an eljay comm. And not tell people they were bad for voicing opinions on what I still feel is hypocrisy.

Because of my bannings, I can't get any news or information about what's upcoming American Girl--new things coming out, sneak peeks, basic updated information such as what's going to be retired/removed and such--unless it is secondhand. I still have the main community I helped found and run, but we don't get a lot in the way of news that's not secondhand. From what I've been told, I get namedropped and remembered, but I am effectively outcast from the two largest channels of information.

Also, not every fandom is writing art.

While I do think a lot of statements like that are pure melodrama, in very small fandoms it's not that hard for a small group of people to make things uncomfortable enough for someone to make them want to leave. I think it becomes a decision between "You know what? Fuck them. They can't dictate what I do." and "You know what, screw this, it's not worth my energy".

OP is being a little blase and insensitive.

I can see how a great deal of joy in fandom can come from your interactions with others. Even if a few other people are being deliberately hateful every time a comment is posted it really makes the whole thing too much like work!

On the flip side: can you ever really divorce a fandom? Or is the connection permanent if you did more than lurk?

I was "kicked out of" a very small fandom. Lots of drama involved, but let's just say that by the time it was over, my enjoyment of the things that had made me a fan was utterly squashed. I gave away all of my books and dvds related to said fandom, and haven't visited a single website or community related to that fandom in well over three years.

The "kicking out" wasn't so much a vindictive banhammer, but bullying, exclusion, trolling my personal lj etc. I dealt with that enough in middle school so I decided to just wash my hands of the entire affair. Leaving the fandom entirely was my own decision.

Daaang. All this is making me quite glad I never get all that deep into a fandom. No one knows my name really or anything like that, and nobody can piss me off enough to ruin something I enjoy.
