Over the course of the recent warnings controversy, I kept seeing phrases like: "As an exiled BNF myself..." "I was forced to leave fandom years ago..." "...she was kicked out of fandom..."
...and this isn't the first time I've heard it.

I've been active in various fandoms for about 15 years now and I still don't understand the concept of being "kicked out"; nor have I seen such a thing occur.

What does it even mean? You get a court order to stop cosplaying or writing fanfic? The postal service intercepts your zine submissions? Ninjas come in the night and steal all your DVDs? I'm utterly bewildered. It seems awfully vague, not to mention unenforceable.

Having been a part of a fandom where the active fans are a fairly tightknit group, I've seen it be applied to that tightknit group slamming someone and his/her work and fannish contributions to the point that there's no one willing to interact with that person for fear of the same treatment. No one's forcing that person to stop being a fan or to stop trying to interact with the fandom at large, but if the fandom has a core group and that core group doesn't want you around? I've seen people be made to feel very unwelcome, and that makes the fandom not so fun anymore, and why stick around if it's not fun anymore?

Man. Fandom really is like high school.

Become a BNF and you, too, can jockey for support amongst lesser fans. It's a battle to determine who ostracizes who first! Will you be declared Queen of the Fen, receiver of iPods and cool swag? Or will you be forced to slink away in shame and self-imposed exile?

I don't remember HS being like this, though. Did everyone go to Machiavelli High or something?

Nah. But I went to a very clique-oriented high school. If you didn't have a "posse" or "group" you were, frankly, ostracised. By EVERYONE.

I didn't have a posse or group.

Sounds like a tabletop game.

How meta.

The adults divided us into convenient "ponds" so we'd be easier to deal with. Big fish ate the little fish routinely, and little fish would band together to critisize the big fish's technique. My high school had 2000+ so YMMV on the method. I was in the "Honors kid" pond and it could get bloody...

Me neither. :/ I always got on reasonably well with the Popular Girls... if we had a school queen bee, she was a girl who'd been my best friend when we were little. And another of the Popular Girls (TM) is still my best friend three years out of high school - I was chief bridesmaid at her wedding at Christmas.

Am I geekin' it wrong?

I think, when you're a teenager with no real-world experience, high school seems that bad. And I think a lot of people don't remember what went on in high school as often as they remember the strong feelings they had in high school.

I think it's partly because so many fans are in high school, at least in my fandoms. Of course that doesn't explain why adults act that way, but then nothing does.

Adding on to my comment above: For a larger fandom, like, say, Harry Potter, the definition of "kicked out of fandom" might refer more to a particular corner of said fandom, like a couple of similarly themed LJ communities or the like.

So, for example, getting banned from multiple Sirius/Remus communities and forums? That makes sense.

I guess it's just that fandom, even fandom surrounding one particular work, is something so nebulous that actual expulsion seems impossible.

The size of the fandom and number of places with an active audience really seems key to me. The bigger the fandom, the more likely you'll be able to find somewhere else to play, so long as you haven't had the same thing happen in other corners.

Exactly. Like if you're ostracized on all the major Sirius/Remus LJ comms and that's what and where you contribute, you're kinda out of the fandom because it's worth the effort to maintain contact. Or if you piss off the wrong person who holds serious grudges, you're screwed too.

I was mostly run out on the rails of Buffy femmeslash because I apparently pissed off one of my flisters who happened to be in that core group of writers. After having most mutual people ignore me, I figured out I wasn't invited anymore. So I left and started in another one entirely (HP). I've kept a few people, though, from that Buffy kerfluffle. One especially listened to more my side than the other because of personal interactions. So it definitely depends on how you're treated by those you've built a community with.

Precisely because "fandom" is so nebulous, there are often a number of different social circles in any given fandom which consider themselves "the center of the fandom" or "the main part of the fandom". When a member of one of those cliques, then, starts making enemies, they may see themselves as having been "kicked out of fandom" -- after all, as far as they're concerned, fandom (or a particular movie/series/book/band fandom) is "ruled" by the clique which they're no longer a part of.

I voluntarily left a small fandom because of the treatment from the 'core' section of that fandom. And it seriously harshened my squee on the original media. I eventually got some of my squee back but I won't go near that fandom. Plus I have a hard time finding new fandoms because of the experience.

That happened to me, only with a slightly bigger fandom. I still squee at it, but it's made me hesitant about joining fandoms for other things.
