Let's Play
I'm not sure how many people are familiar with the concept of Let's Plays but I've become addicted to them. Pretty much its someone playing a game and offering commentary on it. Blind runs are popular as well especially on horror survival games like Silent Hill.

Those of you that are familiar with them do you have any favorites? Or a let's play you'd recommend to someone who'd just discovered the concept?

On a minor note I've started doing LP's myself. I just finished King's Quest 3 VGA remake, and plan to start on KotR I. But I'd like to line up some games to play after that or if I run into issues with KotR, so do you guys have any suggestion? Please keep it to PC games, or games with emulators. And if any of you have tips or comments about my first attempt please let me know. :)

I love LP's. I feel like you can get a better appreciation of a game by watching someone play it.

There are some postively, absolutely, fantastic LPs on Something Awful. To the point where I'd say they're worth the ten bones it costs to register there.

Failing that, the older LPs are archived at this site where they can be viewed for free. Some recs from that site would be Voidburger's Silent Hill Origins and From Earth's screen shot based LPs (though you might want to wait for Voidburger's video ones, as she'll be doing the rest too) any of Feinne's LPs, Rooreeloo's Banjo & Kazooie LP, Chulip by Jamesman (I like this one in particular because the game in question is super WTF and entertaining to watch but tedious as shit to play), and Farenheit/Indigo Prophecy by Lord Mune.

If you do get/have an account, I'd rec Feinne's Disgaea 3 LP or any gold'd thread.

Cool thanks!

I love being able to watch the older games I grew up playing. Plus all the freeware games people like Deceasedcrab come across.

Seconding, and adding the Princess Maker 2 LP for good measure.

I <3 the LP Archive! Two of my personal faves (both screenshot LPs): Animal Crossing: Wild World and Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII.

You can read SA LPs just fine without an account. You can't post, but if you just want to read them it's fine. I've been following the phenomenon since the very first "Let's Play FFVI!" one and still haven't paid the registration fee.

I did not know Voidburger was a girl, that explains where the voice on the Silent Hill vid came from. And yeah, rock.

I love watching the stuff that DeceasedCrab does. I don't read the comments because he's kind of a jerk in them (and he's a jerk throughout the Shadowrun LP), but overall, it's really entertaining stuff. The co-op LPs he does with MadamLuna are also fun.

Aside from DC, my particular favorites (over at http://lparchive.org/LetsPlay/ ) are the KotOR2 LP by Scorchy, the Ultima LP's done by Nakar, 7th Saga also by Nakar, MS Saga by OatmealRasin, God Hand by Kung-Fu Jesus, and Bionic Commando by Kefkafloyd.

It's not quite a Let's Play in the traditional, I-know-this-game-inside-and-out sense, but Giant Bomb's Persona 4 Endurance Run has been known to bring the funny.

"Oh no, Gym class! I've been outed!"

However: If you're also a P4 virgin, it's best that you ignore the comments, as well as the forum threads dedicated to the Endurance Run. Of course, that's just common sense.

The Spoony Experiment has one that amuses me called Let's Play Phantasmagoria. It appears to be a cheesy, poorly acted, not-terribly-intuitive old computer game that would be maddening to play solo, but the combination of snark and unintentionally silly game moments make it fun to watch.

The site is having issues now, but the videos are available on Youtube.

On youtube: Cloud 8745's I Wanna be the Guy due to him going madly insane at times during his playthrough. Especially during Mecha-Birdo. Lots of swearing, of course.

From the LP site, Anything by Dark ID. I love his Final Fantasy VII - Dirge of Cerberus LP.

Ahh, I love Lets Plays. Goodness knows how many hours I wasted in those archives.

Hands down the best evar LP, IMO, would be the Jurassic Park: Trespasser one, by Research Indicates. It's a funny, but also really interesting and well put-together, look at a game that could have been great, but actually turned out kinda terrible. Also, his voice is so soothing.

The Pokemon LPs done by RedChocobo are also very funny. The only thing with those is that she didn't go through the games in the order listed in the archives, and there are a couple references/gags to her previous threads. The correct read through order is Emerald/Crystal/FireRed, I think.

Lastly, if you like The Dark ID's DoC LP, you should check out the ones he's done for the Resident Evil series. He also didn't go through the games in order and there are some big gags and injokes that carry over from previous LPs. Start with the Resident Evil 4 one, and then check the dates given for the original threads for which one comes next.

Lets Plays are like TV Tropes, in a way, in that they are delicious crack. My favorites are the Pokemon LPs by RedChocobo, as mentioned above, and the Princess Maker 2 one, also mentioned above. I'm also quite fond of The Bard's Tale LP, the No More Heroes LP, the Oregon Trail LP by Chewbot and the Red Steel LP, because they hate that fucking game as much as I do.

Speaking of truly horrifying sights: Pokecapn and company's LP of Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 (http://lparchive.org/LetsPlay/Sonic2006/) is, if you have the the fifty or so hours to spare, is both an excellent study into one of the worst games of recent history and an eerily accurate portrayal of Elizabeth Kubler-Ross' stages of grief and extremely long load times.

Also, Malorie's LPs of The 7th Guest (http://lparchive.org/LetsPlay/t7g/) and Alone in the Dark (http://lparchive.org/LetsPlay/aitd/) are knowledgeable and interesting takes on classic adventure games.

Both authors have more LPs on the Something Awful LP subforum--Pokecapn has just finished the follow-up LP to Sonic 2006, Sonic Unleashed (http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3140021), and Malorie is finishing up (somewhat) an LP of Blue Ice, a collaborative attempt to solve an adventure game that the designers forgot how to finish.

Wow, that was a lot of words.

Question: is Retsupurae relevant to this topic, or is this more for quality LPs versus commentary on bad ones?

Raocow on Youtube (and viddler, and Dailymotion) is a pleasantly mature Mario romhack player. Decent editing and quality, and sometimes he hits gold with his commentary.

Unplayedathing on youtube plays more 'obscure' games and does a pretty good job at it. His tastes are pretty much in line with mine, game wise.

EvilTim (Dailymotion) is also CruelestChris on Youtube. He's British, and seems to be a bit of a plane / tank / military geek (judging by the ease at which he identifies say, a polygonal tank that his ninja's slicing in half.) I find him quite enjoyable.

Though there tends to be sound issues, Freelance Astronauts tend to do hilarious stuff with glitches. Add a dot com to their name to find links to a ton of their videos. They're also on viddler (Maxwell Adams) and other places.
