Author feud!
There seems to be a writer's feud on Twitter.

Now, this isn't a for-reals feud, but rather a bunch of writers who have decided to call each other names on Twitter for the amusement of others.

It starts when John Green decides he wants to have a writer's feud. People suggest writers, ranging the gamut of quality from Neil Gaiman to Cassie Cla(i)re (who makes an amusingly ironic comment here. Ultimately, however, Maureen Johnson (no connection to the character from Rent) fires the first shot, despite John's stated wish earlier not to "feud" with her again.

Follower counts are compared. Awards are whipped out and dismissed (though I will admit that Johnson's American covers do have unfortunate implications). There's even a comment about making John cry, as well as a commentary on John's hair.

Justine Larbalestier decides to get in on the feuding action, bringing [info]fandom_wank star Cassie Cla(i)re in with her. "Real" names are revealed. Jellyfish are ordered (for Johnson's bathtub).

Jennifer Lynn Barnes takes sides with Johnson. Johnson attempts to drag Neil Gaiman in on it, but he declines, letting off what is perhaps the best insult in the whole thing.

As of now, Green, who one could say started this fight (and managed to put in a good flamewar on a BlogTV show earlier today), seems to have forgotten about the whole thing.

And they say Twitter is useless. Well, it probably is, and these people would be writing (or perhaps making YouTube videos in Green's case or plagiarizing in Cla(i)re's) were it not for this tremendous waste of time.

ETA: Another postworthy burn.

They all write as well as Dan Brown, just without his sense of poetry.

OUCH.

Based entirely on that twit (what's the singular of a twitter post?), I will find Maureen Johnson's books and I will read them. I will read them so hard.

I use "twit", but the preferred term is "tweet".

Crap, never mind. Her books make Gossip Girl look like high art.

As I said, her cover art is generally crap, at least in the US.

Are they enjoyable? I'm willing to deal with the embarrassment of ugly YA covers in exchange for giggles.

Well, as teen romance goes, they're not bad. Certainly they're nowhere near as creepy as the covers imply.

The Bermudaz Triangle is a sweet coming-of-age/coming out/finding yourself story about three young women; I really enjoyed it.

Suite Scarlett I found to be alternately touching and hilarious (great family dynamics, family runs an old New York hotel, and there are CRAZY theatre people EVERYWHERE).

Devilish was also fun, too - demons in a Catholic girls high school who make cupcakes!

I love it when those guys goof off... I've dubbed them The Awesome Posse Of YA Authors (though I still wont read CC's books, particularly since the main three leads allegedly act just like her characterizations of Harry, Draco, and Hermione).

It kind of weirds me out when I'm poking through the WebComics Dudes' (and Dudettes') twitter feeds, the ones from Easthampton MA you know? and see all these @replies and references to Holly Black and that reminds me of her being close with CC.

It's like... why does internet have to be so small? :(

I also get really really sad whenever I see in Shannon Hale's blog (which I follow because I'm a masochist - even though I know that following her blog just makes me ashamed to be a fan of her YA stuff) that she's been talking to or hanging out with CC and Smeyer. It's like... why? why? WHY?

(thank god that afaik L. A. Meyer doesn't do anything with those people, but i'm staying far away from his blog and the Bloody Jack fan forums so that I don't ever have to know if he does.)

I LOVE Holly Black, so I almost get a "But you're too good for her!" feeling whenever they talk.

To be fair though, if I ever got my silly books finished published, and I somehow ran into CC or Smeyer, I'd still be all "OMG HAY I WRITE TOO GAL PAL!!1"

I would really really like to like Holly Black, but I first came across her because of CC, and I just can't shake the embarrassment squick, you know?

Also, I read Tithe and was underwhelmed, and now I have no idea where the hell that book is, and I went out of my way to get the hardback with the original, prettier cover design. :(

(I think Tithe reminded me too much of Francesca Lia Block, and I was totally traumatized by Weetzie Bat when I was sixteen, so...)

I think if I ever got published, I'd send my prettier, younger sister to represent me at all public events. While I text her things to say, à la Cyrano. But I've always wanted to be a hermit when I grew up, so...

It's kind of embarrassing, but I had a super strong synesthaetic response to the book. At the time, I was on Effexor and anything with a lot of vivid imagery had my vision filled with swathes of color and patterns, and I don't know if it was the Effexor or what, but it hasn't been as strong since then (I still get afterimage sort of memories of color that I associate with books). But it was a lot overwhelming and by the time I finished reading, I was pretty shaky and couldn't remember much of anything about the book except the painful color.

Also, maybe the book has stuff about drugs or abuse in it? I can't handle reading about people doing drugs or scenes of abuse, especially stemming from alcoholism. That would've added to the NONONO response and seems likely for Block, but honestly all I can remember about the book is the color I saw and how overwhelmingly awful that felt.

Heh, I don't think I'd be able to. I mean, I'd be polite in person, and maybe even like them as people if they weren't dicks to me, but I'd keep a distance.

...but as for television, on the other hand... I'm sure if I came across someone who enthusiastically chirped, "Oh, I wrote for Hannah Montana!" I'd probably go, "DUDE I WRITE FOR [SHOW]! LET'S GO TALK SHOP."

Well, I have read her books (morbid curiosity, I swear) and will say that you are spot on with this assessment. Actually, I'm not too sure about Harry and Hermione, but her OC Jace is definitely definitely DEFINITELY based on her fanon!Draco.

Absolutely nothing to do with anything, thanks to this post I was reminded to go see if Kelley Armstrong has a Twitter. She does. Heh!

There needs to be like a link with every author's twitter available. It would make my life much easier, you know.

For my money, nothing is better than Gail Simone's Twitterwar with Mark Waid. Highlights:

Mark Waid: Panicked for attention, @GailSimone launches new "outrage" blog: "Milk In Refrigerators." It fails DISASTROUSLY.

Simone/Waid Twitterwar FACT: At her first convention visit when she was 12, Simone punched Jack Kirby right in the groin "just because."

Gail Simone: Crowds cheer worldwide! Waid universally denounced by world leaders, remaining Beatles.

Simone/Waid Twitter War Fact: Mark Waid's total contribution to Kingdom Come: "Hey! What if that guy had a HAT?"

@tomohara Damn right he hates the fans! Remember that one time he said, "I hate the fans?" No? So what, it's what he was thinking, I bet.
