A Song of Ice and Fire Casting
So, for those who don't know, the really popular fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire is going to be made into a tv show by HBO and BBC. That news isn't that new. What is new is some of the casting. And boy, is it stellar.

Today we got the news from George R.R. Martin that SEAN BEAN is going to be Ned Stark (the main character).

Furthermore, Harry Lloyd (from Robin Hood and Doctor Who) is going to be Viserys, Mark Addy will be Robert Baratheon and a theatre actor, Kit Harington, is going to be Jon Snow (he of the kickass albino direwolf).

Also, Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister.

This show has the potential of becoming the best show ever. You heard it here, folks

Yes. I'd watch it for him alone.

He's one of my favorite actors; I can't wait to see him take on such a great character.

From what I can see, I will have no trouble believing any of those actors as any of those characters. It's an island of casting win in a year of casting FAIL.

If anyone follows his blog regularly, any news on the book?

He decided not to set any more deadlines for A Dance with Dragons because he keeps failing at getting things done on time (the reason why some people are getting rather tetchy and also the cause of Neil Gaiman's GRRM Is Not Your Bitch post). He's had some seriously unproductive periods and then some good ones.

He's just returned from Finland from some cons and now he's going to Worldcon. Aaaand, that's it. His progress posts about ADwD are scanty.

He was quoted by some blogger who attended his Q&As in Finland as saying he feels he'll be done by October at this point, which means, he said, a Spring hardcover release.

I'll believe that when I see it.

I really enjoyed those books the first time through, but in the intervening time, I ended up spotting all the terrible descriptive metaphors and the icky attitude toward sexuality and I find them hard to read now.

I'm not sure I believe it, either, but I'm just reporting what I heard.

Some of the actual writing - like metaphor use - does leave something to be desired.

However, I'll excuse the "icky attitude toward sexuality" considering that the chapters are the POV of people who are largely icky, themselves, to say the least. Hell, even the most sympathetic characters leave a lot to be desired in terms of morality.

It's not so much the attitude as displayed by the characters as the fact that the two f/f scenes made my skin crawl with their combination of coercion and being written really...well, like a male fantasy of lesbian sex, which, eew. In general, any time there's sex, I want to run the other way because even the supposedly healthy scenes (like Jon Snow's tryst beyond the wall) give me the willies.

Oh, yeah, they're not...sexy sex scenes, by any stretch of the imagination. I think they're generally as creepy as the violence, if not more so, including the ones that aren't explicitly set up to be that way. That I understand.

Semi-relatedly, it's been a couple years since I bothered reading one of those things, but I remember there being some characters in the first couple of books who were, what are they called, "women." But I am sure they will get around to casting those lesser parts in due course. Priorities, etc.

Thanks. Might be time to start rereading the first four then, so that I'll remember what the hell is going on.

The news about the casting made me happy, but this makes me flail around the room in transports of glee.

And now I'll forget you said anything so I won't be too disappointed if the book doesn't show up for another three years.

One word: Odysseus.

Well, also -- Sharpe's not dead yet! No, really! (He's... snogging women in India half his age, apparently, but what the heck.)

But basically, this is just SO PERFECT. Because long, long ago, I first read "A Game of Thrones", and I was like, "This Ned Stark guy is the only person I can STAND, in fact I rather like him...", and I have to admit, I was kind of picturing him as Sean Bean, and... then I got to the end of the book. And I've never read anything else by GRRM. "Grr" indeed.
