Looking for Spanish-language music recs!
Next week my gaming group is kicking off a new Supernatural RPG campaign. As the last step of character creation the GM is asking all of us to put together playlists for our characters. Now I'm lousy at this under the best of circumstances, but I'm particularly at a loss here.

My character is Latina (Michelle Rodriguez would be my PB if this was an LJ game), speaks Spanish and listens to Spanish-language music. I'd like to have some of the songs on her playlist to be in Spanish; unfortunately, I speak only a little Spanish and only have a handful of Spanish songs in my library.

So I'm asking for recs! Give me your favorite bluesy, rocking or otherwise suitable songs for a Supernatural style hunter! (or any other songs you love and think I should know!)

ETA: You guys are awesome! Keep the recs coming!

I'm a big fan of Rubén Blades, but your character would have to like oldies -- his popular and artistic peak was in the late '70s to mid '80s. His acknowledged classic is "Pedro Navaja," from 1978. It's a story-song about a gangster who meets an unexpected end on the streets of New York -- a little violence might make it appropriate for a hunter! This page (scroll down to the second entry) has the lyrics both in Spanish and English, and here's the song itself, in a live performance from the '80s:

I don't know if it's what you're looking for, but that's the extent of my knowledge of Spanish-language music, alas!

Well, since you asked for me, I'll indulge in another Rubén Blades rec! I could really get on a roll, but I'll restrain myself to just one more. :) I was thinking of it when I commented yesterday, in that it's another story-song about a life of violence and another one of my favorites. It's a much later song, from 1999: Sicarios, told from the POV of a young man hired to carry out an assassination for a drug cartel.

Unfortunately, "Sicarios" isn't on iTunes, and most of the rest of the CD it's from is only so-so (yet iTunes includes those songs, WTF?), so if you're interested, there are ways I could *cough*provide that song*cough*. But if it's not what you're looking for anyway, no big deal -- I realize the musical style isn't what you specified at all.

Ack!

What I meant to type at the start there: since you asked for IT -- as in more recs. Not me. *is embarrassed*

This isn't Spanish language, it's all instrumental, but I highly recommend Rodrigo y Gabriela's "Diablo Rojo" which you can find here on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FXOd97CtnQ

One of my best friends got into Spanish rock several years ago. If I'm able to IM her today or tomorrow and ask her about this (I'm also in the mood to listening to Spanish music), I'll drop some recs here.

Never mind my last message. Now I get what you want.

Arjona would be a good choice. He's not my personal favorite but this, Pinguinos en la Cama, is pretty good. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGnoh-3B_Zo&feature=related

I've yet to know a latin-american woman who doesn't like Miguel Bosé, even when he's more pop than rock lately. My personal favorite of his is Amante Bandido, that you can see here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjXGuJDSuoQ

This is an 80's song, but I've always thought of Supernatural when I hear it, so it might help, it's called En Algun Lugar http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-DC9kQm-sM by the group Duncan Dhu

This one is a very good 'break up' song, El Sol no Regresa http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awipuZiNo8c , by la 5ta Estacion.

Cafe Tacuba is also a good choice. The only one I have of them is a cover of another group called Botellita de Jerez (that if your character is older than 25 and from Mexico or with a Mexican family could be a good choice too), named Alarmala de Tos, that is pretty much very well known in Mexico: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7A1781hm6-s&feature=related

Tomorrow I go to a Vampire session with a couple of guys who know a lot more about rock in spanish so I'll brainstorm them)

And if you want any of those songs, I'm pretty sure I have them in mp3 somewhere.

Omg, I can't believe no one has mentioned El Tri! They're super bluesy rock, Bob Dylan-esqe even. Cafe Tacuba and Jaguares totally rule too. There's a pretty good selection of their stuff on YouTube, too!

I particularly like her "Suerte". Andean flute for the win!

(I could recommend a number of Andean folk-song style pieces, which do have Spanish lyrics, but they'd require the character to like listening to folk music.)

Clutch has a great cover of Argentine's classic Pappo's Blues "Algo Ha Cambiado" in their last CD. Heavy bluesy stuff both the original and the cover.

There's a great Mexican punk-rock-salsa-ska-everything fusion band called Los De Abajo who are pretty phenomenal live. I've only seen them once so I'm not sure I could recommend a particular song, but you can check out their Myspace page and see if you like anything/anything suits.

One of my new fave bands is an "electrotango" fusion group from Argentina and Uruguay called Bajofondo (also on Myspace). They collaborate with a lot of different artists, and one of their more famous songs is probably "Pa' Bailar"; I'm especially fond of the remix "Pa' Bailar (Siempre Quiero Mas)." Some of their other songs are slower and more groovy but I wouldn't necessarily call it blues (though I only have their "Mar dulce" album so I can't speak for their entire discography).

I've never seen SPN so I have no idea if any of these fit what you're looking for but hopefully they'll help!

If you haven't got the typical white guy choices yet, there's always Santana and the Buena Vista Social Club.

Don't actually have any suggestions :/ but SUPERNATUAL RPG?? This is something I'd like to know more about! Is there a website for it, or a book, or are you making it up yourselves?

It's a tabletop RPG put out by Margaret Weiss Productions ( here it is on Amazon.) It uses the Cortex system, just like the Serenity and Battlestar Galactica RPGs.
