*Facepalm* WHo says videogames don't influance people?
Man believes himself to be in Silent Hill and cuts power to an entire hospital looking for toothbrush that would solve a puzzle.

And he's found not guilty by reason of insanity.

Found after it was posted in the LJ Silent Hill comm here.

Ah, the infamous Dirty Teeth puzzle. It's a toughie.

Someone please dress up like Maria and go over there and flirt with the poor sod.

OK, that made me laugh.

I C&Ped it on the comm, I'll C&P it here as well, because I think it needs to be said:

"If this guy believes he is in Silent Hill so much as to cut power to the hospital looking for a toothbrush... he lives in a scary, scary world, my friends. He is being kept in a hospital full of demons and monsters and nobody around him believes him. They tell him hes being crazy.

I mean, at this point, the guy is living in the real life silent hill. There is no game anymore for him. The whole idea of Silent Hill being something that you're trapped in and affects you differently while you're removed from the real world is REAL to him."

That's so terrifying. :( I feel so bad for this guy. I'm a nervous wreck just playing the games, I can't imagine living in a state where Silent Hill is reality.

Yeah, I have to admit that really gets to me. Believing you're stuck in Silent Hill must be pretty horrific, to say the least.

There's an area of Dayton, OH, that my friend and I joke is Silent Hill.

But the thought of actually living in a place that shifts from complete run-down neighborhood to total living hell just gives me the creeps.

Yep, sounds pretty crazy to me. The fact that he was a psyche patient even before the incident is a pretty big indicator too.

Man, I can't wait until 'crazy' goes the way of 'retarded' as far as respectable speech goes. Sets my teeth on edge something awful.

I don't have a mental illness myself, so it may not count for much, but: personally I'm less bothered by callous but somewhat accurate statements like these (ie it does sound like he has a serious mental illness) than the constant "those X sure are crazy" "More crazy under the cut!" etc at [info]fandom_wank.

Same here. I actually joke about it frequently. My family sometimes gets offended when I do and I'm like "... I'm the one with the issue, guys. :|" It's just... I dunno. I don't think much of the word 'fag' either, and I'm gay. Maybe I am just too laid back for my own good? I rather doubt that, considering how worked up over stupid shit I can get.

Fair enough. Certainly I'm not going to get majorly up in arms about it, there's enough crap that attacks me personally and/or is unambigously hurtful out there to rail against.

I almost said, "I have a mental illness and I'm not offended!" Well, not really, but it never occurred to me to be offended either. I could see why, but I'm more bugged when people use the word crazy/insane/mentally ill in a way that implies it's the sufferer's fault. Because it's really not. But to me crazy doesn't always mean mentally ill, in the way that retarded does mean mentally disabled, or gay does mean homosexual. YMMV.

Plus, I scrolled down and found someone else had said it!

It bothers me too, and it always seems to go hand-in-hand with the "I have diagnosed this wanker as bipolar and paranoid schizophrenic based on 2 wanky posts" sorts of comments. Which I see more on other forums than here on JF, but that's not to say it doesn't happen here as well.

I just saw an icon using it less than 20 minutes ago at FW, and FW is one of the least tolerant places I know of when it comes to that kind of thing, so... yeah. I'd say it's still pretty accepted by most people, given that I probably see and/or hear it at least once a day (at least) and it never fails to piss me right the fuck off.

I suffer from schizoaffective disorder, a disorder that lies between schizophrenia and severe mood disorders. I am beyond NOT offended by the casual use of crazy. I frequently joke about how off-my-rocker crazy I am when I'm not on my medication. (Medication makes alllll the difference between batshit looney and functional. It's just a matter of finding the right medications and the right dosages, blah blah blah.)

My older brother and one of my cousins were profoundly mentally and physically retarded. I am also beyond not offended by that word and have used it myself.

Why don't you leave it to individuals who suffer from and are affected so personally by these conditions to decide what's offensive in what context and what isn't, hm? (I am assuming that you do not, and if you do, my apologies, and I'm sorry if it offends you, but if that's the case, you don't speak for me or the rest of us like us, so the point remains.)

Apologies, I didn't mean to speak for anyone else - I only meant for myself, the word grates.

And I'm schizophrenic, for the record.

Speaking as a gay person who's very tired of explaining that having one gay friend who doesn't mind it doesn't mean I can't or shouldn't mind the use of "gay" as a slur, I take issue with the idea that any individual not being offended means that a term is acceptable. If it hurts anyone, barring really odd cases (the guy who thought "vandalism" should be avoided as a slur on the Vandal tribe for instance) it's offensive.

That said, I think "crazy" has been used as a general descriptor for various kinds of excessive stances/actions far too long to be reclaimed, especially since it's used less and less for actual mental disorders (AFAICT anyway.)
