All I have to say is, I hope my legs are that nice when I'm 45. ♥_♥

I know this is only tangentially related, but it really upset me to learn that a lot of the Olympic speed skaters and other people had been talking trash about what he's done. :(

If he hadn't stepped in, the American speed skating team might very well have died. The Olympic hopes of these athletes would've ended. We would've shown to the world that as Americans we don't care about our athletes. It would've been a crushing moral defeat on the world stage, regardless of your political affiliation. People who are saying shit about it need to shut their goddamn mouths and be grateful that there are still people out there that CARE about helping others.

Whoa! Who's talking smack about Stephen? I haven't heard about this and need to be righteously outraged.

If you're in America: http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/258279/december-14-2009/stephen-challenges-shani-davis

If you're not in America: Colbet shows two clips, one with an ESPN sports commentator who says that Colbert is making a mockery of the speed skating team and it is not dignified, another where someone says that associating with the Colbert Report is detrimental to the US speedskating team. Then a quote is revealed. Top US speed skater Shani Davis says that Colbert is a "jerk."

It's really fucking sickening, and it pissed me off to no end.

If he's such a fucking jerk, Shani, how come you're going to the Olympics now when before you might not've been able to?

BOOOOO. If you don't like him, Shani, feel free to give up your spot on the team. I'm sure someone else would love to go to the Olympics on the dime of the Colbert Nation in your stead.

Just saw Jay Mariotti on ESPN's "Around the Horn" giving Colbert accolades for what he's done, so that's a little help.

I can sort of understand Davis--if I were on a team that was saved from oblivion by Rush Limbaugh, I would have a moment of UGH NO. But ESPN has its head up its ass.

Nah, I still don't understand him. Yes, Rush Limbaugh is a total asshole, but if he had just saved me and reporter had asked me what I thought of him, I would say, "I do not agree with his politics, but I am grateful for what he has done for me and my fellow athletes."

That's all Davis needed to do.

Holy crap. Someone learns that your less-than-household-name team has lost its sponsor, uses his considerable appeal to raise the money you need from average people (whose households are still not all that familiar with the name of your SPORT, let alone the team), and you call him a friggen jerk?

Has the word jerk taken on some new meaning that I am unfamiliar with?

Yeah, no kidding. Given as how speedskating/luge/etc isn't even on the average American's radar, Colbert saved the damn day. Plus, he runs daily segments throwing a spotlight on the different teams and has Olympians in for interviews. With the amount of essentially free promotion he's lavishing on the U.S. Winter teams in general, you'd think the least this guy could do is choke out a thank you.

Though as a geeky and anal ex-speed skater, he's not in the right position!

FYI, Colbert was on the Dan Patrick Radio Show today, talking about the SI cover. You can download the episode from iTunes (the link is to the third hour of the program, Stephen's segment is 12 minutes in) or you can listen to the streaming audio on Dan Patrick's site (look for December 16, either the third hour stream or the highlights stream).
