Yeesh, and I thought I had thin skin.
*sigh*

Look, people have different tastes in things, be it music, TV, art, comics, whatever. Just because someone has different taste than you doesn't mean they suck. If someone likes band X, which you dislike, and they also happen to dislike a bunch of other bands you deem shit? That doesn't mean that their taste sucks, or that Band X sucks by association. Sometimes people actually do like things that are all around bad, and sometimes they like things despite having flaws.

When someone tries to point out that hey, people disagree with your taste too? The thing to do is not get defensive and claim they are attacking your taste; that does indicate how you are a dispassionate judge of what is and is not good. Either shut up and quietly seethe because you think your taste is infallible, or admit that it's not. Taste is entirely subjective and the case in point wasn't even one of those bands where they're off key half the time, or a manga where someone's leg mysteriously ends up with three joints and curved bones.

Oh, also? When you get super defensive, don't assume that the person "attacking" your favorite whatever would act the same way if they were in your position. Some of us have our favorite things criticized relentlessly, by people we like and seek out voluntarily, and we don't have a shit fit.

Some people in fandom don't get that whole "opinion" thing. It's made me very uncomfortable at times. If someone enjoys something I don't, what the hell, maybe they're having more fun than I am.

I think you've basically summarized the root of all wank. "I disagree with your opinion and therefore dislike you personally."

Also, my taste is so off-kilter with most people's that I'm quite used to people looking at me and going "you like that?!" After a while you kind of stop caring. Or turn into a wanker, but I think I prefer my way.

So much WORD.

Sometimes people actually do like things that are all around bad, and sometimes they like things despite having flaws.

There are some things I like to watch that I'll admit are genuinely terrible. And it isn't for the 'point and mock' factor, either. That doesn't mean I'm associated with any existing fanbrats who preach that it's a perfect bit of literature/film/whathaveyou. But it also doesn't necessarily mean I'm in the fandom for the lulz.

Some of us have our favorite things criticized relentlessly, by people we like and seek out voluntarily, and we don't have a shit fit.

Likewise, sometimes being a fan of a show means pointing out all the little flaws - yourself! It might mean that you think, "What if they didn't do this plot cliche? What if they did something different and creative?" And then creating discussion out of that.

Er, sorry for the long post. You've just posted a rant that I've been also thinking about for a while now.

What I will never in my whole life understand is the idea that it is deeply rude and insulting to say negative things about a fictional character.

That said, people do sometimes insult characters as a passive-aggressive way of attacking someone personally, so sometimes the defensiveness is warranted. It's really hard to say sometimes, and is best judged on a case-by-case basis. It's usually fairly obvious, however, when the insult "Hermione is such a bitchy cunt" is code for "YOU are such a bitchy cunt."

Yeah--it's when people start claiming that Terry Goodkind is actually a good author, or that Britney Spears a wonderful singer, that I roll my eyes and deduct about twenty IQ points. I'm fully behind the concept of "trashy fun."

Also: word.
