Dear a fandom:

Please, PLEASE stop using Japanese fanart for icons. You are causing artists to start password-locking their sites. And that's annoying for all of us. I don't know if this is the case, not really being into icons at all, but is it common practice to take fanart (without asking permission), cut it down to 100x100 (even though there is a blurb on the artist's page asking that it not be altered), and then ask for credit when you post them (without offering a link back to the original creator)? Yes, it's fanart, and attaching the term "ownership" might be kind of ridiculous, but are icons really this important? 100x100 squares over -any- artwork?

Maybe if you just ask permission- write and say, "Hi! I love your artwork. Would it be all right if I made icons out of SUCH_AND_SUCH.JPG?" I have a feeling a lot of this could be fixed if you'd just show some common courtesy. Even if you ask clumsily in Babelfish'd Japanese.

My solution to this is to steal the fanart icons made by others.

AGREEDx1000000, as this is a major peeve of mine.

Also, people going "MY ICONS, CREDIT ME IF YOU USE THEM" without crediting the source of the actual fanart themselves? Uugh.

Word, word, word, word. It breaks my heart to see so many artists pull up stakes when a simple request could keep everyone happy.

I very much agree. It especially bothers me when, in the intro to their icon posts, a lot of iconmakers with write something like "Fanart used = CRI MOAR" but then get ridiculously protective and up-in-arm if someone dares use "their" icons without credit.

I agree with this rant so hard, but I think it's also bigger than just Japanese artists vs. Everyone else. There's this kind of entitlement that leads itself to the whole MINE MINE MINE behavior and people who act like that don't care who they steal from just as long as they get 'teh prittis'.

For example, there was this big doujinshi group in Taiwan (or HK or something, I forget exactly where) that did some utterly awesome Yugioh yaoi art back in the day. I think it was called H+H or something. Anyway, people started leaking their racier fanart all over the net, making icons and banners with no credit and H+H got mad. They took down all their art for a long while and only put some of the tamer stuff back up over the years.

Yeah, it's bigger than just Japanese artists, but there's this double standard going on. If you steal an artwork by an English fanartist, someone will definitely call you on it, tell it to the artist, guilt you into at least giving credit, etc. But you can steal Japanese (Chinese, etc.) artworks freely, and if someone calls you on it, you can just say "she shouldn't have put it on the internet!" and that's it. As if these artists were not people with feelings, or something.

(And I wish that people at least stopped uploading stuff to 4ch because that's where most people find them, but of course that's not gonna happen anytime soon. Gah.)

I want to thank you for bringing up the part about double standards because soon after I posted, I realized I hadn't addressed that in my first comment even though I meant to. It just amazes and disgusts me how people can't put themselves in the shoes of the artists they're stealing from and use a language barrier as an excuse to get away with it.

(Totally agree with you. In fact, that's pretty much why I stopped going to 4chan. I figure, why keep going to a place that pisses me off and will never change?)

Actually, when I go to 4ch and see a picture I like, I ask for the source. USUALLY they do have it, but when they don't, I save the fanart, but I won't use it anywhere.
Some people just won't bother or just think "so-and-so artist won't know if I use it anyway and why would they care?", and it's frustrating.

I'm continually surprised just how wanky everyone gets over a little 100x100 square.

YES, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD.

I don't see how it's so hard to understand that if you piss off the people making your pretties, eventually they're going to make it so you can't get their pretties anymore. :( And it causes Japanese fans to view all of English speaking fandom in a negative light. It's hard enough to be a foreigner participating in Japanese-speaking fandom as it is without having the stigma of fanart thievery automatically attached to you.

Late to the party, but... YES, DAMMIT. I fucking hate it when people just take Japanese (Chinese, etc., but mostly Japanese) fanart as if it was their god-given right to do so, and do whatever they want with it. Argh.
