Fuck you, Bakuman.
Because MEN HAVE DREAMS THAT WOMEN JUST CAN'T UNDERSTAND! <3<3<3

And we girls ALL dream of getting married, and forever being GRACEFUL AND CUTE! Ooh, and just forget all those pesky worries like grades (EW!!) because BEING TOO SMART ISN'T CUTE, right?? <3<3<3<3

*STABSTABSTABSTABSTAB*

(Why have I seen some girls laughing along with this statement? WHY? *CRIES*)

Bakuman. Is this the manga from the creator of Death Note I've been hearing about? The same Death Note where a female character was given a "stay in the kitchen" speech and she agreed with her husband. If so... Gee, I am so surprised.

Yes, Naomi was the ex-FBI agent. Then her future husband Raye was telling her as she tried to help, "OMG! You quit to be my little wifey so let The Man do the thinking now and you think of making babies." "I guess you're right." *headdesk* The dub of that scene was really awkward.

I suppose it's more the level of it than the fact that sexism exists in Bakuman.

It's very sad to think about, but I just blinked and moved on with all the sexism in Death Note because it's still within the normal level of sexism I've come to sort of expect from a manga. (Or any entertainment media for that matter.)

Bakuman on the other hand contains such a sheer naked and unashamed sexism, delivered in such a matter of fact tone, that I couldn't help but wondered if the creator is actively trying to make girls not buy this manga.

Maybe that is their plan, and maybe it's been Obata's plan for a while now. Considering the shit in Ral Grad. X_X

I know what you mean. I still liked Death Note just how I still enjoy stuff like Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece even though sometimes they piss me off greatly at stuff they do. (Especially One Piece.)

Eh? All my Google-fu has dug up is that it's about two boys who dream of being manga-ka. No woman could understand a dream like that?

The kid's uncle committed suicide because he was an unsuccessful manga-ka. So when he tells his mother he wants to be a manga-ka too she refuses to allow him until his father interferes and tells her that "men have dreams that women just don't understand".

The other part of the rant comes from earlier in the same chapter where the other main character is talking about girls in their class. He says that smart girls aren't cute (because they're smart) and therefore if a girl is naturally smart she shouldn't try as hard because being cute is more important than getting good grades. There was more from the same scene but I blocked a lot of it out.

Wow, and this was co-written by a woman manga-ka? That doesn't even make sense. I'd like to think that crap is a red herring and out of the blue a strong female wannabe manga-ka will pop up and make these idiots think twice about their 1950 mindset. I mean for all its sexism, and there was plenty, Death Note at least had some self-made women. Hal worked in Secret Service, the CIA, SPK, and as a bodyguard for a high profile anchor; and in pretty much all of those she was the only woman. Then there's Wedy, the femme fatale professional thief moonlighting as L's assistant.

I didn't think anything could make DN look even remotely feminist, but Bokuman manages.

I think it was common knowledge that Ohba is a guy with a feminine synonym?

Honestly though, Bakuman is just... not very good. I honestly cannot tell whether it's trying to be a comedy or serious, and that's a problem in and by itself.

In other words: Kill it with FIRE. I didn't think I'd ever again hate one of Obata's projects as much as Ral Grad; obviously I was proven wrong.

Thank you for putting into words what I couldn't about Bakuman. I really, really wanted to like it, and on some vague level I find it cute, but at the same time:

1) The whole "two 9th-grade kids want to become a mangaka team!" idea feels like it's related to the "I have major writers' block, so I will now write a story about a writer who has writers' block!" idea.
2) I wanted to kick the female character what's-her-name that what's-his-name has a crush on.

Yeah, I really love Obata Takeshi's art, but frankly after Ral Grad and now this, I don't think I can force myself to just look at the pretty pictures.

(Because women wouldn't understand the dream of becoming a manga-ka, of course! Obviously female manga-ka must now join the ranks of the nonexistent, what the fuck.)

The first chapter of Bakuman irritated me with the sudden marriage proposal, and now I hear that it turns actively repulsive?

Awesome.

A must-read this.
