If we're okay to operate under the principle that using "gay" to mean bad is unacceptable, why am I suddenly oversensitive for wanting it to be just as unacceptable to use ladies/girls/women to mean bad? It's the same fucking thing. I know nobody means it to be sexist, but I shouldn't have to explain that to people who can craft a good argument to why using gay as an insult is hurtful even if you don't mean it to be.

Ooooh, I think I see where the disconnect is happening. Better, oh bewildered masses?

Yes, that definitely clears it up for me!

Also, now that it's sparkling, I didn't even realize anyone who isn't a Coach Barkken type still uses ladies/girls/women like that. Are these people trying to be "ironic" or something?

Nah; it happens all the time. Consider my personal pet peeve: "cried like a little girl."

When my daughter was in Girl Scouts, they used to use "cried like a little boy" instead. It's that sort of thing that makes me want to buy more Girl Scout cookies.

Just like people haven't stopped using gay=bad, they haven't stopped using female synonym=bad either. I wouldn't complain about the irony.

I guess I'm lucky to be antisocial enough to never be around people who would use it, or at least, never in situations where they do.

Much much better. Thanks for the clarification!

I guess I just don't hear it used as an insult, or if I do, I don't pick up on it. I'm betting I'll be more aware now, though.
