Dear specific Fandomsecrets troll:
WE GET IT. You think that the film version of this particular comic is the most misogynistic piece of crap ever to hit the big screen. WE GOT IT THE FIRST TIME YOU POSTED SECRETS ABOUT IT. One a day is a bit much, but THREE TO FOUR A DAY IS OVER THE TOP. Please get a new hobby. Feel free to pick up a copy of the graphic novel that the movie was based on on your way out of the fandom, since it looks like you might not have read it in the first place. Or if you did, it doesn't look like you understood it at all.

^_^

*composes self*

*gets down from soapbox*

*mops up sploodge.*

*removes fandomsecrets from "watched communities" list.*

That sounds less like Fandom Secrets and more like Fandom Soapbox. I have a feeling this person lets it be known in their circle of friends a lot.

This is the big problem with fandomsecrets in my opinion; it went from being about fandom secrets to deliberate attempts by anonymous folks to hit hot-button fandom issues and create drama.

At least the trolls used to be clever/funny (I still have some of the secrets saved from last year, when a troll/group of trolls spammed the comm with Morrissey secrets.) Now it's all just whining, butthurt, 'I SHIP IT', different aspects of racefail/chauvanismfail, and 'THE PEOPLE WHO LIKE THIS ARE WRONG AND STUPID AND HERE'S WHY.'

I should have stopped following that comm months ago.

The last time I went over there, there wasn't much going on.

But honestly - if I see any more butthurt from people over this comic or fILM ("OMG ALAN MORE IS SEXIST ZACK SNYDER IS SEXIST SILK SPECTRE I/II ARE SEXIST RORSCHACH IS HOT HOT HOT AND I WANT HIM TO GET IN ME RIGHT NOW [from the SAME PEOPLE] THE COMEDIAN IS SEXIST DAN IS FAT LOL.") I will probably throw myself out of a window.

...and all of that isn't even BEGINNING to scratch the surface on people obsessing over Dr. Manhattan being pantsless. I had a friend call me up from the theatre to complain about that.

Oh god. Considering this is a film with some of the most graphic violence I've seen in a while, I find it hysterical that most people seem to be more upset about some CGI dangly bits.

My screening had some teenagers who would applaud any time Dr. Manhattan's junk was onscreen but other than that, we didn't hear a peep from them.

I did however find myself shushing a woman who insisted on singing along to the Nat Cole song playing during the Comedian apartment fight scene.

I know. I barely even noticed despite everyone harping on it before I saw the film. In most scenes they either showed him closed, from the back, or only his upper body. It really wasn't obvious. The massive graphic violence, yeah, that was rather disturbing.

My brother told me that from what people were telling him, and the way they were going on about it, he was expecting Dr. Manhattan to be hung like an elephant.

Which was apparently not the case.

There's something wrong about people complaining about sexism?

(Reply to this)(Thread)

[info]rennyn_alerothi
2009-04-05 10:49 pm UTC (link)
No, but there is a problem with people mistaking sexism in comics being pointed out as a problem with sexism itself. The Silhouette being murdered isn't itself an example of homophobia or sexism; it's an example of how hypocritical the Minutemen were to have kicked her out: hence, an example of how the "Superheroes" were flawed and not very heroic. Silk Spectre I and II reflected the changing attitudes about women-as-superheroes since WWII, and Silk Spectre II clearly expressed distaste about herself and her mother being objectified several times. The people who are bitching about how 'WAAHHH WATCHMEN IS SEXIST' are missing the point.

I don't know. I agree that Alan Moore is trying to point out the sexism of earlier comics but I still think he unwittingly shows his ass too.

2009-04-06 12:27 am UTC (link)
In what way? I hear a lot of people claiming Sally's feelings for Blake even though he tried to rape her as the major proof that Moore is 'OMGSEXIST', but that just goes back to the idea that Sally's internalized the sexism that has been directed towards her all her life. Same with Laurie, in some respects.

So... wait. It's basically that people who see the comic/movie and interpret it differently than you are WRONGWRONG and should shut up? Because only your interpretation is valid? That's really not on, if that's what this is about.

The rift between the comic fandom and movie fandom is a pain in the ass. What about those of us who liked both?

I get the person who says he/she doesn't get how Rorshach could possibly be considered gay, but the ones about "OMG SILK SPECTRE I/COMEDIAN FANDOM MAKES ME SICK EW EW EW EW EW" ones are a bit much. We get it. You don't like it.

I've been called a "new fan" for liking the movie, as if I couldn't have read the book at least a year prior to the movie. (Well, actually, I didn't finish it till July, but I blame Moore's writing style more than anything)
