Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
I remember those good old days. I was twelve years old, and I thought everyone's internet opinion was serious business. I got my panties in a tight wad whenever someone dissed that one character I obsessed over. Then, I would proceed to declare internet war and make big essays about why no one should say mean things about my favorite character ever.

Really though, why do people care so much? It's a fictional character. That character is a figment of some creative author's imagination. It's not anyone's mom or something. Sure, people's reasoning behind things can be dumb, but let's face it: they'll get lives in a couple of years. Wankers usually do. Okay, not all of them, but still! I love Cassie Ainsworth from Skins. I have this girl crush on her, but I'm not gonna get all pissed the hell of if someone on the internet called her a stupid bitchy whore. Really? I'm too busy keeping chicks off my real life man to care about some fictional character's e-reputation.

Overidentification? The character is wish-fulfilment; therefore, you diss the character, you diss the fan.

Or something like that.

I keep my mouth shut, but it does tend to piss me off when people rail on female characters. Even when they might have a point it annoys me a little too much.

I don't care if people like or dislike a certain character, but I get annoyed when they provide reasons for their dislike which are clearly misrepresentation of canon. Kind of like when fanfic makes a character OOC to diss them. It's dumb and dumb things annoy me.

This, and then when some bashers take it a step further and imply that fans of the character are idiotic sheep who lack the intelligence to see how horrible the character truly is.

That's incredibly irritating, yes - though you get the opposite, too, when people are clearly too daft to realise how awesome a character is.

I understand people getting angry at the way an opinion is presented. Otherwise? It really shouldn't matter if people don't like the same characters you do. You want to debate, that's great, but preferences are preferences, and it doesn't actually affect the character at all.

I know damn well I can get over invested and a bit too protective of some characters. This is when I step back and drink a nice cup of tea. You can do that on the internet.

Just personally? I'd get narky cos of the inherent misogyny such comments revealed.
