Not all non-canon shippers, be they slash, het, femslash, or whatever are "teenagers who need to mature so they'll know better", sweetie pumpkin (hey, if you're going to pull out the sugary condescension, I will, too). The fact that you automatically assume that even in a fandom where the majority of members are over eighteen speaks volumes about your own fandom maturity. In fact, I dare you to go into the long-running fandoms and pull that shit. Come on over to a place like scans_daily, or one of the old-school Trek comms and tell everyone who thinks any pairing the author didn't explicitly state is interesting anyway is obviously an immature teenager with no sense of writing or characterization. It'll be fun to watch you get roasted on a spit.

Almost sounds like a rant from the old HP fandom.

Annoyingly enough, it seems to be happening now in more than one fandom I'm in. This incident just particularly annoyed me, for some reason.

Pshaw. In DC comics I ship a pairing that's so far from canon I'm pretty sure the characters involved haven't even met, and it's been a long time since I was a teenager.:)

non-canon shippers, be they slash, het, femslash, or whatever are "teenagers who need to mature so they'll know better"

I usually hear the opposite sentiment, namely, that the canon shippers are immature teenagers who can't or won't think outside what the source material gives them.

Who is supposedly immature for liking what pairing tends to go like fashion trends. It's too much to ask that it be based on sense.

I used to think this way, as a teen. I first got introduced to fanfiction via fanfiction.net where most in my fandoms wrote canon het pairings and most of it wasn't good at all.

Then I came to LJ, dabbled in other fandoms and discovered some really, really, really good non-canon slash writers and was like "omg! non-canon is the way to go!".

Needless to say, nowadays I know there's variety among both groups in terms of sanity, rabidness and fic quality.

That's be it. You did better than me, I had to bite my tongue and limit myself to one comment before I really got snippy.

That'd be the reason I'm not commenting anymore (...tonight, at least). I need time to sit on my hands and tell myself that one shouldn't insult people.

Girl Genius?

...this being the fandom where the author either drew fanart (or just signed an existing picture, I forget) of two of the Jaegers getting slashy with each other?

If there's ever a place not to complain about shipping, that's it.

Also, considering one of the pairings with the biggest amount of fan-squee discussion-comm support right now is Moloch/Violetta, based solely on the fact that they banter well and despite him having a crush on someone else, the commenter's whole "even if it was het, I'd question your motives for pairing someone the authors haven't expressly stated will get together" thing looks even stupider.

If you count making an idiot out of himself in front of her and mooning over how wonderful she is after she yells at him, he's got it bad for Wilhelm.

You'd think people would get used to non-canon shipping, since it's not exactly rare, but I guess some people just don't understand it.

(I know many people will say this sort of thing, but I ship many very non-canon ships and I haven't been a teenager in over two decades.)

I feel your pain. I have an ex-friend who pretty much thinks anyone who ships non-canon pairings is an immature, shallow, sex-obsessed, fangirl (always female, because men never objectify people sexually, nooo), and most likely, a slasher.

I remember scratching my head over a smutfic that had the most unlikely (het) pairing imaginable (different races, lived on different continents, ideologically different, very little chance that they ever met, let alone bumped uglies).

Him: Oh yeah, slashers are so annoying.
Me: But, this isn't slash.
Him: They just put people who are HAWT together, they don't care if it's plausible or not.
Me: But this is het.
Him: Don't they see how SHALLOW they are?
Me: This pairing is a MAN and a WOMAN.
Him: Slash, slash, slash, blah blah blah...
Me: I give up.

Yeah. We parted ways for a reason.

It could be that he was using that other definition of slash, maybe? I know some people use it to refer to any non-canon pairings at all, he might have meant it in that sense (and thus not seen what the point of the het comments were).

Or maybe I'm giving him too much credit? ;-)

Some people are really ignorant about slash. I've had a person who's never read more than three fanfics try to tell me slash = all pornographic fanfiction. *facepalm*

Ryuunosuke/Shinobu.

I guess it's kinda like the stereotypical yuri "girly girl and tomboy" pairing, but hell...

First, you've got this really cute, punchy, somewhat damaged girl who can't help acting like a tough boy, and it helps that she can hold her own in a fight. I'm a really big fan of hers, and I really wanted her to just break free from her dad and, find happiness and live her own life.

And then you've got this sweet little girl who just so happens to be amazingly strong. She's stuck by Ataru since they were kids, even through all the bad things he's done to her, all the philandering and neglect, until he tosses him over for the handsome and rich Mendou... who mostly strings her along. She's strong, but she's also looking for love, mostly in the wrong places.

So you've got two people who are strong, resilient and had a lot of crap piled on them in their lives, and are both in need of somebody to love. That sounds like a pretty good foundation for an OTP.

It helps that they once had a pretend date, were once dressed as a bride and groom, were each other's first kiss in the anime, and Ryuunosuke even said she crushes on Shinobu...

Yeah, that's why they're my OTP. *thoughts on yuri*

Every time I start to get huffy about weird pairings other people like that I don't see I have to remind myself that at least one of my favorite pairings at any given time is probably a crossover ship.

It's hard to get all high and mighty about stuff when I have AIM RP logs proving that I have shipped Schuldig from Weiss Kreuz with Krad from D.N.Angel.

It's probably the same motivator that makes people declare all bad sex is written by virgins, all racist stuff is written by rednecks (or Americans, which is a fun I ran across t'other day), all misogynistic stuff is written by men, and so on: it means that you can never do that, because you're not one of those groups, no siree. You're safe.

I'm very much a canon shipper, and I still think that's ridiculous. It doesn't matter what you ship, and it certainly doesn't make you immature if your ship of choice isn't canon.
