You don't like slash? Especially not in your historical fandom, and especially not between two of the main characters, because one is the manly man of your dreams? (Despite the fact that he's really something of a narcissistic coward who's in rather poor health and has a giant, fragile ego that can be shattered by a few words-- not saying he isn't adorable, of course, I love the poor guy, but he's not made out of badass manliness.)

Well, that's fine! You don't have to like it. In fact, I can totally get why you might not-- homosexuality is very, very bad for your favorite character's health, and I doubt bisexuality would be greeted much better, and there is a trend of the other main character treating his romances like Bond girls, loving and leaving them-- and who want that for their favorite character?

I knew this, and so I didn't talk about slash around you-- or much at all, since it's a tiny, old fandom, for a show that's awesome and old (my mom watched it as a kid!). I joined the LJ community, and chattered with the friend who got me hooked on it, and squeed over episodes with my mom and talked about plots with my brother, and I was pretty happy not talking slashiness at you!

So when the fandom got a new comm, just for slash, and I joined, and I posted to the "WHAT SHIPS DO YOU SHIP" thread with "this guy*that guy, because omg do want!"-- you had to have been looking to get offended at me. You don't even like slash, why would you look at the slash comm? And why would you message me to ask me to defriend you because I made a post somewhere you shouldn't even have been at?!

I am very baffled.

In summary: Anti-slasher goes out of her way to find out what I slash, gets into a tizzy and defriends me because she is "completely not okay" with my ship (that I have never knowingly mentioned in her presence). What.

Hogan's Heroes, a WWII comedy from the 60s. It is full of lulz and awesome, and if you're interested, the Universal HD channel does marathons on Mondays, and the TV Land website usually has a few episodes up at a time.

My ship is Colonel Hogan*Kommandant Klink, who are total frenemies-- Hogan treats Klink awfully, but Klink obviously respects and almost-trusts (and maybe-crushes-on, if you're wearing slash goggles) Hogan, who's a far less faily person in general thank Klink. I find it adorable, personally, but the subject of the rant feels differently.

I was sure it was Hogan's Heroes. I watched that as a kid too.

Sounds like you're better off without this person, if they don't know how to stay out of slash comms when they don't like slash.

It's a fantastic show, and has aged really, really well, considering its age and subject matter. <3

Yeah, they were an okay sort of aquaintance, but I don't need to hang out with someone who freaks out over what I read/write/roleplay/whatever. 8\

XD I like Schultz too much to inflict Klink on him! Anyway, Klink domming anybody would require Klink not having a spine made out of particularly floppy jellyfish.

1776 is amazing. <3 I'm always so happy when people have heard of it. (And I have a shameless fangirl crush on Ben. How is he so awesome, I ask you!)

Also, whenever people start going on about how the founding fathers were brilliant paragons of virtue to a man, I want to strap them down in a chair and make them watch it. Fun AND educational y/y!

I found out about that musical not that long ago, and I fucking LOVE it. My friends are sick of hearing about it.

And as a native Pennsylvanian, I am all for that portrayal of Ben Franklin. So much win.

Hmm. Now that I have so many slots for icons, I should use some for 1776...

This fandom still exists? My inner child is thrilled!

As for ships, I'd prefer HoganXHilda; it's canon and it slopped over into real life. But HoganXKlink works for me, too. Combined with the canon het pairing above, it makes for a kinky love triangle at the office.

Indeed it does! There's a few fansites, and a couple LJ comms (obviously). XD stalag_13 is the general comm, and I believe the new slash one is inthetunnels or something like that? [info]seiberwing got me into the show. :3

Hahaha, that's plenty adorable, too. <3 And love triangles make everything better-- especially since canon has actually brought up threesomes as solutions to having one woman and two men... *grins* Man, I love this show.

And who won't stand for people slashing her character, reserving the right to be bitchy and take fandom seriously about it. (That's is near-exactly what she said, too.)

I mean, I put George Takei on a pedestal of hot manliness, but you don't see me objecting to non-heterose-- oh wait. :P

Thought I showed it to you. *rereads* No, you're right, it was her saying that she uses LJ to relax and destress and doesn't want any contact with topics that upset her, and she's not comfortable with the things we disagree on.

Not specific, but I'm pretty sure I know what she means.

That's what I was going to say! I mean, I love Klink and his wussy ways, but he's not exactly overflowing with machismo.

And there's a Hogan's Heroes fandom. I never knew.

It's bizarre, there's a fandom but it's more dedicated to collecting the tiny information and looking at it in the context of historical info than fanart/fanfic. Very intellectual, not really that big on the emotional. It's great if you're the one who wants to write the fanfic, but disorienting when you come from a modern fandom.

Wiki's quite something to see, too.

(Reply to this)(Parent)

[info]sgaana
2009-09-27 04:21 pm UTC (link)
So, wait. *Klink* is her paragon of heterosexual manliness? Because upon finding out the fandom, I would have assumed she was just that into Hogan. (Which I can see -- snarky, leader, scruffy uniform, etc.) I'm boggling.

(But that said, while it's the first time I've really thought about it, I can totally see Hogan/Klink.)

I was also momentarily nonplussed by the idea of describing Hogan's Heroes as a "historical fandom", but I see the point. (I would have said "historical-fiction fandom", because while the setting is "real" for certain values of "real", the characters are fictional. As opposed, for example, to creating a fandom around "1776", and shipping the actual historical characters.)

Hogan I'd get. Hogan is very manly and assertive and seduces all the women. Klink is just...what?

As opposed, for example, to creating a fandom around "1776", and shipping the actual historical characters.

Which is itself a fictionalized depiction, albeit based on true events. ...I get your meaning, though.

Yeah, a few times - we exchanged a few PMs so her contacting me wasn't totally out of the blue but the comment about slash was. I'd never even talked about slash with her. I guess she looked at my LJ profile and saw I had a few slash comms friended.

I always think it's hilarious when people "ask to be defriended," in any case.

It is not enough to simply defriend you, the link must be completely severed! Your name showing up on her "Friend Of" list causes seriously psychological (and possibly physical) pain!

That, um...the fandom doesn't really seem to have noncanon het ships. If there's a woman (barring one specific shrew), it's almost guaranteed that one or more characters will be attracted to her.

Unfortunately, I lack HH's icons, and don't have the space for them here if I did. So I settled for the next-best thing-- slashy historical frenemies from a different fandom, yay!

XD I try to be nice and only be mean about people behind their bac-- wait. That doesn't quite work... XD But still, escalating with someone seems kind of silly, in context, especially since we were hardly more than acquaintances in the first place.
