Dear Blizzard,
For the love of epics, could we have one female character with a custom model who doesn't have her stomach and cleavage visible? All of these women are in armor, only one of them doesn't really need her organs, and none of them are the type to dress that way.
Sincerely,
One of your feminist subscribers

Yeah, I'm not entirely certain why the leader of an independent nation and an incredibly gifted mage in her own right needs a dress that consists apparently of a skirt, a back/sleeves, and a metal bra.

Welcome to MMO game design.

...seriously, I wish I were lying. It's kind of been annoying me as well.

MMO design? Game design in general. But just because it's expected doesn't make it any less annoying.

From what I've seen of Warhammer Online, it looks like some of the female classes get armor that protects the vital areas!

(my only MMO experience comes from a brief fling with FFXI, where it indeed took me a few levels before I could buy pants.)

The only game I've seen recently break that mold was Warhammer. My female characters HAD CLOTHES. Peasants DRESSED LIKE PEASANTS. Sure, Dark Elf Sorceresses and Witch Elves had skimpy outfits, but I attribute that to lore baggage and it didn't bother me BECAUSE MY OTHER CHARACTERS HAD CLOTHES.

Speaking of Blizzard and their female characters...

Did anyone else see the new design for Diablo III's Sorceress and think,

"Oh wow, it's like if Ty Lee and Azula actually had a child together."

http://us.blizzard.com/diablo3/characters/wizard.xml

That would be awesome, but what is said offspring doing in Diablo's game world?

Come over to City of Heroes, instead! Sure, if you want to you can still create a boobtastic character with almost no clothes at all, but you can also choose to put the chest slider all the way to the left and dress from head-to-toe in armour.

I'm pissed that they gave her a custom face that makes her look like a snobbish airhead. Old!Jaina looked much more friendly.

I'm less concerned with her actual model than I am with people's reactions to it.

"Slut" and "bitch" have been thrown around at an awfully depressing rate, and by way too many women.

I had such hope for Wrath, as my blood elf death knight isn't showing her midriff if I find the right armor for her. Unfortunately, that's tough to do with the tier sets.

I have given up otherwise and my paladin is male to avoid the objectifying stuff.

I played a female Orc warrior (quit in early August, and it looks like it might actually stick), and I was our guild's main tank. It bothered me to no end that she would go charging in wearing a midriff-baring chestplate. Luckily, though, the Warrior tier sets were usually not too cleavage- or boob-tastic (they were pretty clearly designed for use on the male character models). To fix it, I started wearing a shirt that matched my armor full-time, and a tabard. Tabards are win. (My baby is here, by the way.)

You just need to get some things straight here. If you are not a teen/early-20s rich, white, heterosexual male, game companies consider you an appendage at best. Blizzard is just particularly bad at hiding their utter and total disinterest in you.

The sooner you get that through your head and stop asking them to do silly little things like make their game a fun and pleasant experience for each and every one of their subscribers, the happier you will be.

I'm hoping that what I'm seeing in more current game design is showing that WoW style "herp bikini mail" (so bitter about Alexstrasza, she doesn't even match other dragons!!!) may be on the way out. Well, not entirely, as Aion is showing me (mail comes in mini skirts and thigh-high socks did you know?).

But, I am seeing a lot of US-based game devs abandoning bikini mail for more realistic type games. Bikini mail has no place in Fallout or Lotro, for example. Warhammer avoided it for most female characters (and admittedly the Dark Elves don't bother me as much as maybe they should). The token love interest in inFamous wasn't built like a supermodel and wore sensible clothes for an EMT/doctor in her setting (the fact the only women were there were token love interest/sex things is its own separate issue). What I could be seeing is just the high fantasy worlds that facilitate bikini mail are less popular than they have been in the past, but a girl can hope.

Of course, it's still around, hounding me like a hounding thing. (Muramasa you're so pretty, why oh why is she wearing a kimono like that?!)

Though, I suppose the other side of the coin is what about women who like to see some ass jiggle and cleavage in their characters? Which is all well and good, but I'm not too fond of a trend that involves objectifying and making sure that important, powerful female NPCs are sexy. Emphasizing their fuckability only serves to undermine their power if it makes no coherent sense (noblewoman showing cleavage in a court dress? Whatever. Bikini mail? WTF).
